Always remember this from Ferg after Drico's last home game for Ireland:

I think people seeing to conflate critisism of performance with abuse. Crowley never received any of the vitriol Prendergast gets from some.

Prendergast is rightfully dropped form the 23 as his confidence is shot and his weaknesses have not been addressed, however what some have subjected him to online is nothing short of shameful.

Agree, Andy is the one at fault here, he trains and picks the team and he's supposed to do that to the best of his abilities because that's what he is paid to do. If the team is in trouble due to lack of confidence or not being ready for international duties then he hasn't fulfilled his role as head coach of the team

As an aside I think pinning the performance against Italy on one or 2 players is also unfair and I'd have been happier to see Farrell pick 20- 23 different players based on last weeks performance

    Quite a few odd decisions.

Izzy dropped out of the squad. He could cover back-row and 2nd row. Now Beirne and Ryan have to play a full 80.

Sheehan & Joe Mc's poor form rewarded.

    Casey and TOB selected?!

34 caps and 10 tries. If he hadn't been made of glass in his later years, he absolutely would have hit 50 caps.

The only sense for Frawley is that they want Crowley to get the full 80 at 10. Even then they could have put Stockdale on the bench instead of TOB to cover 15. So I dont really get it.

It's a bit of an odd selection.

    I would have gone with:

Loughman, Sheehan, Furlong, Ryan, Beirne, Conan, VDF, Doris, JGP, Crowley, Lowe, McCloskey, Ringrose, Baloucoune, Osborne

With Kelleher, OToole, Bealham, McCarthy, Izuchukwu, Casey, Byrne, Frawley

    Reasoning:

VDF is likely to play the full 80 if he can or nearly the full 80, so I don't see huge value in having Timoney on the bench for this one. If he has to go off injured, we can move Doris and Conan across and bring on Izuchuwku. Or drop Beirne back and bring on McCarthy.

I think Izuchukwu more likely to bring the sort of impact we'll need off the bench, it's likely we'll be chasing the game and need some athleticism.

Similarly, McCarthy hasn't been great but he could be great coming off the bench. I don't like Beirne at 6.

I don't really see the value in TOB, Frawley is an odd choice for 10 cover but I'd be fine with him being number 23.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,227 ✭✭✭bingobango12

I get that but Crowley could pull his hammy after the 1st minute and we genuinely have not got a chance of winning the game with Frawley at 10. Byrne at least gives us a fighting chance.

As you said, Stockdale at 23 covers fullback so I really can't understand choosing Frawley/TOB instead of Byrne/Stockdale, unless there is some injury.

Awful selection but at least it might be the "kick up the arse" Farrell needs. England will batter us

Good to see some positively back on here 😀

Interesting call to bring Frawley in… I see the plan to bring 3rd choice Leinster players into the squad continues, despite it not having worked in the past. Byrne would be a much better selection

Don't mind this selection. Furlong back and needs to put a few games together this year or we'll need to write him off. Beirne and VDF given a chance to turn around their form a la Lowe last week. (another example of someone written off as useless and past it, then shows he's still our best option, even if he's not in his prime.) Izuchukwu and edogbo I'm disappointed not to see start but Izuchukwu didn't do enough last week. Harsh on him not to bench but then I wouldn't leave out Timoney or Conan. Edogbo I presume was in for a taste of test rugby against Italy but he had a poor cameo with the knock on and penalties. Presume he'll get time against wales and a start in the summer tour. Only thing I woukld take major issue with is conan being left out. Not sure what he has to do to get a run of starts

Sam had to be dropped unfortunately, he looked a shell of himself last week. crowley gets another chance but i'd imagine we'll see sam again in the summer or against wales. Not sure why exactly frawley is so despised on here. I'd be comfortable with him coming on in this game and the difference bewteen Crowley/Sam/Frawey/Harry Byrne won't be the winning or losing of it

Now I'm going to take cover in case there's major blowback to a post that isn't overtly negative 😅

Did Mack Hansen have a point on The Tommy Tiernan Show? Are Irish people some of the most negative people about? This thread would definitely support that hypothesis.

A selection that reeks of desperation, by a coach who knows his back is to the wall, going back to his old favourites in the hope that they can muster a performance to get him out of jail.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 59 ✭✭bigmac86

That overall selection just feels like Izuchukwu could have played like prime Kaino and still wouldn't have been retained. Really dont like a starting flanker (yes he's a lock) having to cover 2nd row. The benefit of edogbo last week was that he added fresh grunt off the bench. In a game against england your 6 isn't going to be fresh after 55/60 minutes and if our scrum is already in trouble then I can't see any improvement from someone shifting to lock, whereas a fresh lock off the bench could add something.

Farrell and his staff need to be shown the door asap

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,229 ✭✭✭TRC10

Izzy played well last week. He was our best lineout forward and would have scored a try had Ringrose (who keeps his place surprise, surprise) not thrown him a shocker of a pass.

Its not really just a case of going back to 'old favourites'.

But Im definitely getting a whiff of desperation.

HAPPY - No 6/2 Bench and with Crowley and vdF starting.

Not Happy - With 5/3 Bench of TOT, 2 BRs and no SP or HB.

Beirne at 6 doesn't match up well against pacey Pollock / Earl & workhorse Curry. Looks like a Set-Piece Pick.

    15. Jamie Osborne - Leinster/ PONI?/ Signed March 2025 (Expiry 2026/27?)

    1.Paddy McCarthy - Leinster/Signed May 2024 Expiry 2025/26?

    1.Jack Boyle - Leinster/ Expiry 2025/26

What is the point of picking TOT at Loosehead?

What was the point of Milne moving to Munster?

What ws the point of Mine playing v France?

Are they now moving Porter back again to Tighthead?

(CC) Central Contracts. From May 2024 the Provinces were responsible for 30% of the cost of National Player Contracts, up from the previously set 0% (Apparently!).

(PONI) Player of National Interest. The Original IRFU contract for National players - % of split is negotiated with the province.

*April 2025 (NPC) National Player Contracts. Same as CC but effective August 1st, 2026, the Provinces will be responsible for 40% of the cost of National Player Contracts, up from the previously set 30%.

I don't understand the amount of stick Beirne is getting of late. He won 5 turnovers vs France and was our top tackler. He was easily the best player in our pack. Ryan was the tighthead lock when Furlong got air lifted against Italy.

The selection for England is very poor, especially in the pack, but it's not Beirne being chosen I'd have an issue with. It's VdF being picked ahead of Timoney, McCarthy getting another shot and Conan not starting that I'd be questioning.

Agreed but noway will it happen, even if we loose the rest of games. The only way AF goes is if he decides, if he does go then it wouldn't surprise me if the rest of the coaching ticket stayed, which would be a disaster .

I genuinely think some of the negative stuff posted on here is worse than on X.

With regards to the team, I would have liked to see Izzy make the 23 but Timoney has shown he can be excellent off the bench already. Not convinced on Edogbo’s aerobic fitness especially if he had to come on early and I expect Twickenham is not the place to find out with England likely putting the ball in behind us frequently.

Can see why he’s gone for a 5/3. Ringrose obviously isn’t 100% and Baloucoune has a history of frequent injury. I’d expect TOB to cover wing and 13. I’d be worried about having Osborne or Frawley having to cover 13 at this level due to their relative lack of pace. Frawley offers cover at 12 and 15 in big Stu has to go off rather than rejigging the whole backline by moving Osborne in.

Loughman is lucky enough to hold onto his place but we don’t have many alternatives at the moment. Sheehan is a better option than Kelleher for the lineout if we are looking to attack off that platform. Casey keeps his bench spot due to Doak’s inexperience at this level although I’m hoping we see him against Wales.

he’ll go after 2027 WC is a disaster and all the pearl clutching people will be wondering what’s gone wrong again

My only hope is he might do the right thing and walk at the end of 6 nations if it all goes badly wrong .

He's not close to playing at the level he was a few seasons ago. Not showing up in the carrying game, not making the same sort of impact at the breakdown. One of his best attributes was his ability as a ball carrier, that's a rarity currently, whether by design or otherwise. Based on his form, I don't think he's playing better than Conan, or Baird prior to injury.

Edogbo was out of feet after 5 mins and he only played 10mins. He would not be help this week.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,887 ✭✭✭Downlinz

He made 9 tackles which is a crazy amount of work to get through in 10 minutes, no wonder he was gassed.

Edogbo always looks gassed! It just the way he carries himself

Then have Izzy in the bench. 5/3 could pay off IF theres an injury in the backs, but if theres not, then the lack of an extra forward on the bench is more likely to be a difference maker than springing a 23 who only covers wing.
