Has the penny finally dropped for the Mayo-4-Sam / Andys-Winning-Matches Brigade ?

We look utterly toothless up-front when given minimal time on the ball by the opposition , whereas Donegal carved us open at will whenever they felt like it.

Hennelly gave us a platform to take the game to Donegal with some exceptional kick-outs , but we didn't know what to do after that.

We have a lot of work to do to get back to being a top team so today isn’t a surprise, I expect we’ll see another game like this before the league is out . The kicking was poor today , but at least they were kicking and I’ll take that over everything we saw in the last couple of years any day.

Anything I've seen with regard to this has been a bit of banter and excitement? If people are saying Mayo-4-Sam and you take them at face value then your the problem. Heaven forbid a county where the negativity has crept so bad that there might be a positive outlook.

Everybody that follows Mayo football knows exactly what the targets are for this season

No Craic permitted. Only deathly serious statements on win probability permitted. Incorrect predictions will be scorned.

Down with that other sort of thing about any element of positivity or enjoyment of the games.

can we stop over reacting to a loss in February under terrible conditions

Bob Tuohy is a big positive so far this season, he's really improved to the point where he's close to being a nailed on starter for the championship IMO.

Loftus did well yesterday when he came on as did Boland.

The terrible conditions didn't seem to affect Donegal

And with a very understrength team. Plenty of players to come back in to the fold who will add to the team - McBrien, Conroy, Cian McHale, Eoghan McLaughlin, Mattie Ruane. Maybe Dawson and Morahan from the UL team. Frank Irwin may be a better option than James Carr. I don't think Diarmuid O'Connor is option for midfield. Looked well of the pace yesterday. Paddy Durcan will also get better if he doesn't get injured.

I haven't heard anything at all about Cillian O'Connor. I wonder is he in the mix at all.

I don't see what Carr is adding to the line up at all. But Andy must have a reason for giving him so much game time! Time will tell!

It's not worked for him the last few games but without game time we'd never know, and he'd be the next Richie Feeney. He's shown flashes of brilliance in the past to be fair to him so it's worth giving him a shot, but he'll need to find the posts or the onion bag soon before patience runs out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 4,250 ✭✭✭MacDanger

Yeah, Carr definitely has the potential - I remember Andy name dropping him in an interview when he first came into the squad way back - but he needs to start showing something soon or it'll be hard to justify him even making the 26

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,577 ✭✭✭✭PARlance

It's nearly 7 years since he had that stormer down in Limerick vs Galway. It seems like we've all been hoping to see that player re-appear again since then.

When I saw Andy taking him off early at the weekend, I thought it may be a sign of him giving up on him a little. Limited games in the league left, there's a few there who he might see as better options / more likely to benefit from the game time.

Never copped it was that long. He did a very good interview with Cahir O'Kane which is worth creating the account to read. It outlined the challenges he faced and his reasons for stepping back a few years ago. He seems like a well grounded individual. I recall seeing him at a club league game vs Ardnaree a few years ago. He really was something else scoring 2-4 or 2-5 of Ardagh's 2-7 total. Granted it's a very different level, but he was so much further ahead of everyone else on the pitch, despite all the additional attention he was getting, and the amount the ref was letting away with against him.

Playing his club football at Junior level the last few years won't have done him any favours in terms of experience mind. I'd love if he did catch fire, hopefully things haven't passed him by.

I think Andy is hoping he will work as a FF because we dont have many options there. Carr is strong and fast and has the reputation of being a goal threat. But the reality is that his scoring returns are very low and his decision making is very poor.

OShea is a more intelligent player but is too slow to run on to balls played in long and also isnt really a scoring threat.

    So its a problem position.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,927 ✭✭✭muddle84

It certainly is a problem position! But Carr isn't a scoring forward at the moment. He has an up hill battle anyway considering he's only playing Junior club football away from county and has had injury issues. I just don't see him being the answer considering its been so long since that goal against Galway!

O'Shea isn't the answer either for that position as he isn't a consistent scorer!

TBF to Carr, he has at times shown the potential to be very good - 3 points from play down in the round robin game in Killarney but then scored nothing the next day out against Louth. He's had so much time out with injury though that he may never fulfill his early promise

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,263 ✭✭✭Westernview

I think Carr had a lot of potential initially but between injury and his junior background he hasn't developed properly and at the age of 30? isnt likely to.

It shows how important the new CEO will be. Revenue will need to be generated to have full time coaches implementing plans at every club in order to maximise players potential.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,577 ✭✭✭✭PARlance

Come Championship or nearer the end of the League, I think we'll see Andy going with a target man at FF, with pace coming from the other two inside forwards.

I've a feeling AO'S and DO'C could be used as that target.

Carr is a walking advertisement to have four regional teams playing senior. One thats properly supported, not like the last poor attempt at getting it off the ground

I don’t get the Carr hype. As someone said it’s a long time since that game down in Limerick. Fact is we don’t have scoring forwards. I’d also worry about our “great going forward” defenders like Hession who simply don’t defend. I hope to see Kobe play a part in Monagahan.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,927 ✭✭✭muddle84

Saying that we don't have scoring forwards is absolute nonsense. Darragh Beirne, Ryan O'Donoghue are natural scorers. Cillian is on the panel and he's the all time top scorer! I don't think he should be there though as he is past it now.

Then the likes of Jack Carney and Jordan Flynn have proven that they're well able to kick a few points.

I agree that we don't have enough scoring forwards and we need to find a FF that scores.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,927 ✭✭✭muddle84

I really don't see AOS or DOC as the answer for that position, neither are consistent scorers and just slow the game down!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,415 ✭✭✭FullBack Jam

Definitely not DOC anyway. He has neither height nor speed now.

On Aidan, I think Mayo have shown over the last decade that we do not know how to utilise a big man in full forward. I don't know why that is the case. When Aidan was stationed in around the square, it is very seldom kicked into him, and when it was, it was more of a hit and hope up in the air, rather than a strategic kick for a full forward to run on to. I remember when Kerry had Donachy full forward, the likes of Tomas O'Shea were able to kick the ball in at a curling angle, outside of the boot, and was perfect height for Donachy to fetch the ball. Karl Lacey did it for Murphy back in the All Ireland in 2012. If playing with that tactic, it has to be perfected on the training ground. But it never seemed to be implemented on the pitch.

Anyway, that ship has sailed. Big Aido ain't up for that anymore.

I don't think there has been any hype about Carr recently unless I've missed something. He has played 58 times for Mayo in league and championship (27 starts) and scored 8-34. Not a bad record IMO. Certainly warrants a place in the panel. His mixture of pace and power are something none of our other forwards really have.

His problem persistently has been injuries and getting fit. I would hazard a guess that he's never started and finished a full game for Mayo.

I find it baffling after a variety of management teams since 2009 that people still complain that we don't know how to use OShea. Has it not occurred to people that a lot of the problem may lie with the player himself? In the first league game this year against Galway long balls were kicked into him in one on one situations but he didnt get many of them. He has certain attributes but lacks pace, scoring ability and often even aggression.

The goal against Donegal in 2015 was a glimpse of what he could do - used his physicality to gain possession and then barrelled through defenders to finish to the corner. But we rarely saw that level of power and aggression repeated despite usually being the biggest, most powerful man on the field.

Andy In fairness seems to be tying to keep him to a bench role now but a reliable replacement has not been found so far. I hope he finds one as we need to move on now.

I'd wager Frank Irwin will be in that Carr role from now on. Similar build, likely to score more

I remember watching Aidan in this match back in 2009 when he first came on the scene and thinking that he was going to be a massive player for us at FF - he shrugged off Conor Gormley like a rag doll for both the goal and the one that came off the bar so he was capable of it at one stage even if we rarely saw it in the years since:

I was just about to say the same thing, its down to the player! The ball often gets played into him, he will then proceed to run it into contact and lose possession or fail to score, perfect example of this was in the Tyrone final where he even had an open goal and failed to score. How often have we seen him being the one to try and kick the ball in instead of being the one waiting to receive it. He's not that type of player!

There is absolutely no room in the modern game to be fielding anyone in your starting six forwards who carry little to no zero scoring threat. This ain't going to happen under Andy's reign.
