Plenty of "influential activists" in America post mental crap on the daily. I doubt very many people pay attention to it and what she posted is hardly a stick to beat Muslims with, which you seem to be doing.

Justin Barrett comes out with mental **** all the time, does that mean all Irish people are the same?

We were talking about why businesses chose to avoid European markets closer to home and concentrate on US etc

You decided to relate it to your own personal circumstances for some bizzare reason

The reasons are internal European barriers that are still in place tho EU to their credit are trying to do something about it

That’s something that Draghi highlighted in his report, implementation of which would narrow the gap between US and Europe that has developed

The first step in addressing a problem is identifying the root causes, That’s what Draghi has done, blaming businesses that chose a road that has less hassle is lazy simplism, we should instead concentrate on making it easier to start and grow and conduct business within Europe for Europeans as per report that’s gathering dust now for years

It's more polite to call him racist than 'ignorant bigoted ar*eh*le' . Getting into the definition of racism is just deflection. No problem calling him, or you, racist. And minimization, too, but that's your goal.

The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the LORD your God.

your question has nothing to do with what’s being discussed

It matters not a single iota that she’s “an influential activist”. She has nothing to do with Mamdani and is entitled to her opinion. Do you have an issue with the US president calling for a congresswoman to be deported or vilifying all Somalians in the country, calling Mamdani a communist (but not to his face because he’s a coward)? Does his position not come with more responsibility than “an influential activist”?

It does. You said that businesses often avoid the EU market but you can't say how often.

Yeah , saying you prefer dogs to Muslims, Jews, Hindu, Christians etc is not racist simple as that.

    erm, it actually is!

Muslims are not a race so it can't possibly be racist, I can become a Muslim and I'm white as snow.

FFS - you've really sunk to that stupid level to defend your nonsense?

    image.png

He mentioned Muslims in particular because a muslim said they should no be part of the future of New York as indoor pets.People who say stuff like that deserve to be called out on their bullshit.

He didn't call her out on her bullshit. He deliberately worded a statement in reply to an individual in a manner designed to offend all Muslims as being less than dogs.

Anyhow, by your logic, because a Jewish congressman said something offensive means that all Jews can be called out for being offensive - is that not deliberately changing a comment directed towards an individual into a completely antisemetic one?

    That often

Reading and implementing the Draghi report would close this ever growing gap

That's a third time you've failed to answer the question. GDP growth is not remotely the same thing and that's just some random image you've dumped here.

That chart is very simplistic. I wouldn't claim to have any knowledge in this area but Krugman's post below argues why.

Now compare to overall quality of life, workers rights, things like that.

The counter argument for that is that she made it about all Muslims. She didn’t say “I don’t like dogs.” She made it a religious, group statement.

It’s not even an obviously satirical statement. There is a notable portion of Islamic interpretation which does think that dogs are unclean, should not be house pets, and dogs are commonly abused or put down on religious justification.

    https://www.animalsinislam.com/islam-animal-rights/dogs/

So the “why was it posted” question is valid, but as much for her as him. It is true, I would likely have never heard of her before Fine posted. Then again, I also did not recognize Fine’s name before this blew up. Did she post it to get a rise, or is she part of the not insignificant Islamic community who truly believes the house-keeping of dogs (of any size, and in any size community) to be haraam?

If the former, well done to her, if the latter, probably worth noting if an influential activist has such opinions. The risk with going for a rise, however, is that they can be taken seriously if it’s close to a truth. One may wonder what the New York Dog Society (there actually is one) might be thinking of her tweet, even if she made it in jest. They seem to be taking the course of silence, though, likely little benefit to them to be getting publicly involved in this.

This is only ‘ half’ the story. The ‘other half ‘has got to do with how the total wealth generated is ‘shared’ . For example (and for the uninitiated) what is the point in a country where The population consists of, say, two people and the average GDP is €100,000 but it is all generated by one of them and the other person generates nothing and the one generating the wealth is allowed to keep it all . I have kept it ‘simple’ to make my point.
Maybe I should have used AI. To make it more simple!!!!!!!!

Indeed - Remove the top 5 % of individuals from both data sets and then make the comparison.

The enormous transfer of wealth from the bottom 90%+ to that top 5% in the US over the last 10 years or so is staggering.

    Stop excusing maga nonsense.

She made a silly statement. He responded with a bigoted one that serves as clarion call for other bigots.

I think there has to be alot wrong with a person if they find themselves agreeing with Randy Fine, he seems more like a troll than a politician. I cant imagine someone in real life saying something like "I prefer dogs to Protestants". You'd avoid such people like the plague.

I guess it shows that even when Trump leaves the stage, there is still a lot of weird politicians in America to take up his mantle.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,213 ✭✭✭Ardillaun

All that was solid and assumed in America's dealings with other countries must be questioned under Trump. The closer the relationship, the worse the vulnerability. You really don’t want a special relationship with these guys:

UK bank bosses will hold their first meeting to establish a national alternative to Visa and Mastercard, amid growing fears over Donald Trump’s ability to turn off US-owned payment systems.

The meeting, chaired by Barclays’ UK chief executive, Vim Maru, will take place this Thursday and bring together a group of City funders that will front the costs of a new payments company to keep the UK economy running if problems were to occur.

The City-funded, but government-backed, initiative has been under discussion for years. However, Trump’s recent threats against Nato allies over Greenland have amplified concerns that an over-reliance on US companies could put UK payments – and the wider economy – at risk.

If someone said that they preferred dogs to Republicans there'd be uproar.

    She said:

    image.png

Her statement has nothing to do with care for animals and is about dogs being viewed as unclean in Islam.

if she said "It's unfair to keep a German shepherd in a small apartment" then your argument would have some merit to it, but she didn't say that.

I doubt there would, people tend to like dogs, I (and a very high percentage of others) choose them over every group of religious people, nationality in the world. If you told me no more Irish people in the world tomorrow or no more dogs in the world then outside of my friends and family I'd pick the dogs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,750 ✭✭✭Jack Daw

Well if liking dogs more than Muslims, Jews, Hindus, Christians, Italians, Spaniards etc is racist then I guess I and millions of others across the world are racist aswell.

She is not an elected representative and nobody needs to concern themselves about what she says.
Randy Fine is a public representative and because the Rep party/MAGA appears to be based around hatred and division, his comment is somewhat unsurprising but nonetheless it is completely unacceptable because it is without any doubt racist due to its anti-Muslim content. Defend it all you (or MM) like but that does not remove the absolute fact that it is a racist comment from a congressman who is meant to represent all of his electorate, not just those who belong to specific "approved" groups.

I'll aks again: if a similar comment had been made about Jews, would people be calling it anti-Semetic?

I guess the "no dogs no irish"sign could be replaced with a "yes to dogs no to irish" sign.

I think the online discourse around this topic has been really strange, and really outed some real weirdos.

Im atheist but I dont prefer any animals to humans just because they are religious.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,394 ✭✭✭The Raging Bile Duct

Randy's statement is so messed up he even lost Megyn Kelly. If some people can't see how problematic/racist his tweet is, given his history, I am truly baffled by their blinkered naivety.

Jewish people don't make arguments against dogs because they don't conform to their religious beliefs, if they did I'd have no problem saying I'll pick dogs over Jews.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,750 ✭✭✭Jack Daw

I;m atheist aswell and outside of my friends and family I prefer dogs to people.

That isn't an odd view though even though you might think it is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,892 ✭✭✭Sudden Valley

I think the narrative that someone would like a person less than a dog if they find they are a particular religion is truly baffling. It displays a deep prejudice.
