Used the Discovery+ app for the summer Olympics it was well worth it. Presume the Winter Olympics will have a similar level of coverage.

I’m pleasantly surprised that they are offering live coverage of the Irish competitors in action. At least they are getting some value out of the rights they hold.

I see the Olympics section is now available on Discovery+

2 Free TNT Olympic channels has popped up on my Virgin box tonight.

Not sure if thats for everyone or just for Virgin.

What number on the epg? I didnt see them when I had a quick look.

I dont have TNT subscription but used to have Eurosport on my VM package.

Seems like those Virgin Media channels are for UK VM customers on the "Entertainment" package:

    • Virgin Media UK: watch on TNT Sports; Virgin Media Entertainment customers via two linear pop-up channels
    • Virgin Media Ireland: watch on TNT Sports

I see curling on already..... has it started?

I thought it was kicking off tomorrow!

I wouldnt advise kicking off a curling stone!

Its like soccer at the summer olympics, pool games start before the opening ceremony.

Starterd yesterday with day minus 2. Today is day minus 1.

This happens at summer Olympics too. Certain sports that need the days in order to complete schedule usually due to venue or rest days reasons start before the opening ceremony. Last summer Olympics it was football and rugby sevens for these winter games curling, ice hockey and snowboarding all starting before the day of the opening ceremony (which is classed as day zero)

No medals won till day 1 (Saturday) though

Good to see RTÉ providing their own commentary for the Opening Ceremony rather then relying on the World feed. Pauric Lodge is doing the commentary.

just to confirm that Irish subscribers to the basic Discovery+ package, including those who receive it as part of their Sky TV deal have access to the Winter Olympics streams

    Both live and on demand

I love the Winter Olympics. Watched the Netflix iceskating dance 3 part series and am now up to speed with it. I will never enjoy curling

Curling becomes the butt of many jokes due to the sweeping part but it is weirdly gripping. For instance I have seen it being ridiculed by people who watch golf, darts or snooker.

Saying that watching the odd match every 4 years is more than enough.

I know there are other ways to get Winter Olympics content but I just want to put it on the record how stupid it is that RTÉ are not making what limited live coverage they have available to watch back on demand. It seems if it doesn’t air on linear it doesn’t get put on the RTÉ Player. The BBC make all their sports content available to watch on demand on the IPlayer. Why can’t RTÉ do the same on their player!

Probably just due to lack of demand. Realistically how many people are going to want to watch pool stage curling matches back on repeat.

RTE didnt show the biggest event of the entire Olympics - the downhill?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 289 ✭✭AJB39

I’m not saying that they should provide the entire Winter Olympics on demand, just the events they previously aired live. I’ve no way to watch back the Irish competitor in this mornings Downhill on the RTÉ Player because I wasn’t able to watch it live on the Player and it’s not available to watch back on demand.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,194 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

they put 35 seconds of it on social media. Really don’t think RTE not putting 2:04 seconds on the player is a big deal tbh

The Winter Olympics doesn't even have a real thread on Boards. This thread about TV coverage is the only place it's mentioned.

They did live on RTÉ Player, but no catch up. The OBS highlights show is available on demand and is actually sponsored by Fiat.

Can't find a dedicated thread to the sports themselves. But if you haven't had a chance to see the Ice Dancing competition, you've missed out. Beyond gorgeous! I didn't want it to end.

I always try to watch as much as I can, be it downhill or even curling, it's something different and won't see them again for another four years.

    🙈🙉🙊

I’d need Idris Elba to be competing to be interested in curling lol

    v ok, sorry mod, I didn't know.

A reminder that there’s no chat about what actually goes on on the, er, ice.

Start a thread in the relevant forum if one doesn’t already exist. I know this one’s convenient, but I need to enforce the rule for the sake of the other sports rights related threads.

I just bought a Discovery+ sub, the only way to view the most beautiful, thrilling, gravity-defying, competition in the world this year. Super Bowl? Yaaawwwnn!

The one-hour highlights show on RTE Player is almost useless. Just brief teaser clips from various competitions. A minute or so of action from every event, combined with interviews of all the medal winners telling us they can't tell us how wonderful it all was. I liked the Chinese guy who said his bronze medal was "better than nothing".

Of course, RTE did send a team out to Milan to provide their useless fare😜

And it’s fine coverage too. Noticed their multi-screen viewer isn’t working too well on AppleTV, but on Sky you can watch up to four streams and control the audio. The highlight overlays tend to be hit and miss. But it’s solid coverage in the App. Oddly nice seeing the TNT coverage pass to the German Eurosport reporters every so often. Nice seeing that familiar logo again.

No real reason for them not airing this on RTÉ2, Jan was RTE2 with a 3.6% share of the audience, I doubt the Olympic would diminish their audience on RTÉ2.

    ______

In the end they were just greedy, they all knew one another and knew what to expect more money for no return, it was a secure cash flow, but in fairness they looked for what they wanted and fair dues to them for that, and wouldn't you be doing the same!

Just one more thing .... when did they return that car
