I sent a message to the Moderator a couple of days back suggesting that the teletext topic should be separated on to a new thread.

Sorry for using the wrong thread. Subtitles now working via Saorview box. There won't be any more posts. Thanks to everyone for your help.

    Your welcome

Leaves a bad taste to say the least that they mis-sold you a TV that was not as described, tried to fob you off with lies and put you to the inconvenience and extra expense of buying an STB.

Well at least he got a saorview box instead with subtitles on it

A TV that can't do subtitles is not fit for sale.

Months after several radio stations ceased, 2RN finally updated the list on Channel 30. However, they seem to think that Radio 1 Extra is still a thing.

Bizarrely, programme information is still being carried on the defunct radio channel numbers.

I think we have it right this time.

Just need them to put Radio 1 on 201 and move the other radio stations up to fill the gaps and my OCD will settle… for now!

After all these years, what a pathetic line up of channels on Saorview.

And that's a fact, embarrassing really to be honest.

True, more channels would definitely be very welcome but just to point out that excluding news, children's, shopping channels and the +1s there are about 40ish channels on Freesat/Freeview, for a market many times the size of the RoI. Given that many or most of these are available here free or subscription some may have opted for SaorView.

Very true and I do wish more channels on saorview but can't see that too happen but hopefully soon and future

Virgin really should add a +1, at least for VM 1.

They must be losing viewers especially in the 8-11 slot due to clashing with similar type programmes on RTE and sometimes TG4.

Most people would have recording available so +1 channels really do nothing

Checking ChatGPT - to put a channel on Sky for SD costs €30,000–€120,000 while Saorview costs €300,000–€600,000 which is frankly ridiculous (HD prices double that) and seems in line from what I've read elsewhere and would put any competitor off and why not just use Sky for UK and Ireland

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,905 ✭✭✭✭thesandeman

I don't have recording available and I'm sure many (I won't say most as I don't know any figures) others are the same.

I recall when Challenge came on to Saorview, most of the posters wanted it removed.

I recall before UTV Ireland started broadcasting TV3 asking that under the Broadcasting Act 2009 that UTV Ireland be declare a public service broadcaster to be allow to be carried on Saorview. In TV3's view the new broadcaster wouldn't have any of the public service requirements that TV3 has.

No such letter was sent by Virgin Media Television to the regulator or the minister on the addition of either Sky News or Challenge to Saorview, even though Sky News has no Irish content, while Challenge has no original content or Irish content. And neither have a license to broadcast from the Irish regulator.

IMO if Sky where to add a channel it should have been either Sky Arts or Sky Mix. Or a mix of each of the Sky FTA channels.

    Morning - Challenge

    Afternoons - Arts

    Evenings - Mix

    Late Night - Arts

    Early Morning - Mix

Saorview is no more than Analogue +

    RTÉ 1, 2, TV3 and TG4 with OTV

    RTÉ 1 +1, RTÉ 2 +1 and TG4 +1

Repeat channels RTÉ NEWS NOW, RTÉjr and Cula4 (forgot VM2, 3 and 4)

    And 2 sky channels.

    It's 7 channels at most.

    ______

In the end they were just greedy, they all knew one another and knew what to expect more money for no return, it was a secure cash flow, but in fairness they looked for what they wanted and fair dues to them for that, and wouldn't you be doing the same!

Just one more thing .... when did they return that car

It looks like the few channels that we had before Digital, is just about enough for the Irish terrestrial market. Broadcasters were never lining up to pay Saorview to go on their platform. And with streaming being the future, that bird has probably flown. It would have been different if there was no satellite, with easy access to lots of free to air channels.

I wonder what an all-IPTV world will mean for us? British services such as Freely are geoblocked. Will we see Irish services fill that gap, or will we just become reliant on the big US streamers instead?

They really should be made to go HD. Watching sport on VM is a joke

It was badly run. Ireland had 2 issues.

    1. We were late to DTT by about 10 years, DSO only happened due to the EU
    2. Broadcasters and the regulator didn't see that if an Irish channel was to be successful than it would need to have a guarantee to be available on both Cable and Satellite, can you imagine if the extra channels on Freeview for the UK PSB channels weren't also available on Pay service providers?

There is no real reason that smaller Irish broadcasters couldn't have survived on terrestrial. That's not to say that the market could have achieved more than 10 extra channels.

VMTV2 (AKA Channel 6) makes a profit, at this point so is VMTV3 (AKA Cullen AKA UTV Ireland) is also making a profit.

It was badly planned, if a channel crashes out of the market then fine it is what the market dictates.

At this point you are right, but many mistakes were made before the streaming revolution.

People seem to forget that content has to be paid for. The TV licence hasn't increased since 2008 (too much of a political hot potato) and advertising revenue is not what it used to be. So it's no wonder Saorview has only the bare minimum lineup.

That said, there is no excuse for RTE removoing the digital radio channels and the +1 TV channels. These cost very little to run but provide a service useful to a lot of people

RTÉ has since been bailed out. They seem to forget that everyone suffered during the downturn from 08 - 11. They consistently spend money where money shouldn't be spent. I feel when we talk about the lack of licence fee increase we forget that RTÉ wasn't being well managed and they propagated the idea that they were doing what they could.

RTÉ could have at one stage added RTÉ2 +12, basically RTÉ's late night RTÉ schedule in prime-time. Though RTÉ2's late night is not as good as it once was.

There is no excuse for RTÉ News NOW.

But it is not just about RTÉ's broadcast channels, why not Cine4 (TG4 and Screen Ireland getting together for the Irish Film Board Channel?), and its not just about the current TV broadcasters.

Yes, as part of the "New" Direction strategy. Don't worry its planned for circa 2029 but they were a year late with the closure of their digital radio stations.

Terrestrial television in Ireland have gone full circle, after 15 years of saorview we now know where it stands and its disappointing to say the least.

Its back to basics and a tidy up job.

Four main national channels with HD upgrade as follows,

    1920×1080i RTE1, RTE2, VM1, TG4

    1440×1080i VM2, RTE NEWS

544×720i Oireachtas TV, RTE Junior, Cula4

    Regular Radio channels.

Scrap all the rest if space is not available on the multiplexs.

VM could have paid to go HD long ago. What would make they pay now? And you left VM3 and VM4 off your list. If Saorview is getting money from them (and from Challenge), why would they not continue?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,742 ✭✭✭RoTelly

More a question as to why VMTV didn't feel it necessary to speak out against their addtion. I doubt if Channel 4 decided to go on Saorview that VMTV wouldn't be writing to the Department.

Yes but only if there is room available of course, instead of opening a third Mux
