It's obvious now that his London stint was always just a siding until NK get him back into rte.

It would explain his zero interest in developing an English audience while there. Instead he continued on as if he was still broadcasting just to an Irish audience.

Reminds me of the long wave stations that transmitted to the UK from Ireland

The most apt summation is that he is an institutionalized presenter lost without an institutionalized audience.

Only problem now is the institution is moving on.

I think if he's going to be back on Irish radio or television it'll be in the commercial sector.

I think maybe Today FM could give him a 9am or 10am show.

How much of a following does he actually have?

His radio slot actually lost listeners when population growth is considered.

Essentially his presence in a safe established slot actually lost listenership. That's would be termed a liability in any industry.

His stint in london only confirmed his ability to adapt beyond the institution that coddled him.

is his audience advertiser friendly? With Rte radio 1 trying to drop their average listener age would Tubridy push it the other direction?

He has a massive following on the Radio Forum.

What does he actually have to offer.?

London could have been a reinvention, but he squandered that by constantly pandering to his previous audience.

    What audience wouldn't he alienate?

Pensioners don't spend much so commercial radio wants the ears of earners, and he's pissed off enough wage earners with his vastly over estimated self importance.

That must be Nigel with the brie...

Forget D-Day, Ryan and Noel's pummelling of the public via Irish media lately is more like Dresden.

Glad you found my linked video useful, I found it treated the subject with reasonable fairness to all sides.

The legacy issues are history at this stage and good to see Ryan moving on in his life and apparently a happier person doing his own thing. As he said himself 'maybe Bakhurst did me a favour' or words to that effect'.

If there had been a slight chance of him returning to daytime national radio, it was last year when RTE and Newstalk were rejigging their schedules. He's too late to the party, even if there ever was one that would have him.

Saying some Irish people are uncomfortable with radio presenters earning big money is a disingenuous comment. We're all used to entertainers earning more than most of us will ever do. It's beyond question that RTE management were too flaithiúlach with the salaries they were willing to pay, but I don't blame anyone for putting their hand out to take this money. What soured people on Tubridy were the shenanigans around the barter accounts and his claims that he didn't keep a close enough eye on things. Even if he's telling the truth, that statement is very far from the reality of Joe and Josephine Public. Most people have to keep an eye on their finances, and that includes any money that's paid into their bank account.

I've said this before, but when Tubs left London in the summer of 2024 for his holidays in Galway, just as the London social season (Wimbledon, Henley, etc.) was getting into full swing, that was the sign for me that he was making no effort to further his UK career. Anyone who is anyone in the UK media scene will make sure they're seen at some of these events (his old boss at Virgin was seated behind me at Wimbledon in 2018.)

Thing is, because his RTÉ career involved Tubs doing very little but still climbing rapidly, he probably assumed the same thing would happen in London. He didn't have to worry about networking or any of that, because he thought he'd naturally rise to the top anyway, like he did in RTÉ, not realising he was mollycoddled and pushed forward from day 1 at RTÉ. Because he didn't know any other workplace, he assumed London would treat him exactly the same and he wouldn't have to make much effort to become the next big star of UK broadcasting.

    @supereurope

I bet he's never internalized that his high rte pay was only because the executive was rewarding itself and had nothing to do with his personal ability.

    Bosco had more going on.

It was obvious on Day 1 of his radio show that he had no interest in building a UK audience. It has turned out to be a short-sighted approach because his options in Ireland are limited. If he had tried harder to connect with a British audience and had done a better job, who knows where he might be now? It doesn't look like any British media outlet came looking for him, even for one-off gigs.

No one came looking for him as soon as he parted with RTÉ despite being paid so well to stop him being poached, so I wouldn't hold my breath now if I was him.

That's a fair point, though I think he had too much baggage at the time for anyone to hire him. My guess is they saw London as a way to decontaminate him and to hopefully manoeuvre him back into RTE.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,058 ✭✭✭glenfieldman

Or words to that effect ??? But you were asking for exact quotes of him lying

I wish he'd just f** off and leave me alone

I don't think the BBC or Channel 4 would have been too bothered about the RTÉ baggage, if anything they could have used it to sign him on a lowball offer. They just weren't interested, and still aren't.

Where did I ask for exact quotes of him lying? Not that my rough quote from Tubridy is equivalent.

I think if Ryan was as happy as he wants us to believe we wouldn't have heard of him at all over the last month. He would be off enjoying his married life.

Yet, here we are, barraged by reports in the Irish times, Irish independent, appearances on rte, virgin media letting everyone know just how happy he is now with his YouTube show and times radio gig.

My favourite bit of the video you linked was the laugh from the female contributor when fionnán Sheehan mentioned - the late show - the obituary idea.

Calling his new project - the late show - is another example of how he has moved on from the scandal, is so happy with life and how rte is the furthest thing on his mind.

But then he should have kept his head down in the UK. We couldn't forget Ryan, or the scandal, because it was like he never left, with the Q103 simulcast and his "London Dairy" etc. If we weren't allowed to forget Ryan, then we couldn't forget the scandal.

given the recent media coverage of him,

Is NK on a “no foal, no fee” type arrangement?
Tubs is hardly paying out of own pocket.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,725 ✭✭✭Bellbottoms

I don't even know what 12 to 1 is. What was Marty up to?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,697 ✭✭✭yagan

NK business may completely depend on RT in Rte, even at a vastly reduced income compared to the past.

It's about solid revenue and nothing is more solid than tv license money, or at least used to be.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,660 ✭✭✭lee_baby_simms

NK isn't covering himself in glory in his management of Tubridy. RT has literally stepped on rakes perpetually since the scandal broke. Maybe Noels flood the zone media blitz is all just a token gesture to justify his fee and fulfill an obligation before they part ways. If NKs business depends on RT then he's even more myopic than I thought. Tubs is yesterdays man. The gravy train has derailed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,697 ✭✭✭yagan

    @lee_baby_simms

A good agent knows when to advise their client to lie low and clear the decks, like repay the barter top up and plead their own woeful financial incompetence.

The RT and NK attack reels of entitlement.

    Who else does NK represent?

daytime TV early 90s, some bedtime attire for the more adventurous!

    ______

In the end they were just greedy, they all knew one another and knew what to expect more money for no return, it was a secure cash flow, but in fairness they looked for what they wanted and fair dues to them for that, and wouldn't you be doing the same!

Just one more thing .... when did they return that car
