I never use CCS charging on my 24 model Y, maybe 2-3 times (definitely twice, once at supercharger and one easygo) - but the last two times I've tried to use it have been terrible failures - both late at night with no time to properly troubleshoot:

    1. At a CircleK fast charger last novemeber - didn't have an app or anything, just tried to use the supposed credit card tap, but couldnt get it to work at all, no matter how many permutations of plugging it in, tapping, following instructions etc. I chalked this down to a shite or broken charger set up and carried on to my destination, using a regular Type 2 charger.
    2. Tonight the wife tried to go to an Ionity charger - she didnt have the app or anything, tried to follow the instructions for scanning QR code and paying online, she did everything, got charged 40 quid but could not get it to start charging. She called me pretty upset - I had the app installed (but never used it before) and tried to initiate the charging on my phone for her - tried 2 different chargers there, I was charged 40 euro each time, neither successfully started a charge.

She found a Type 2 22kw charger nearby, plugged in and I was able to start the charge with the providers app on my phone and start charging with no issue.

Now, thats twice on 2 different chargers that CCS charging has failed - I can't recall the exact messages in the Tesla app but the car definitely recognizes its plugged in, just won't charge. am I being really stupid and doing something wrong in the above scenarios? I am certainly not a luddite and have used fast chargers before with our Ioniq (rarely, but always successfully with ESB and easygo)

Likely problem with the car or am I missing something obvious?

Very, VERY angry wife is selling the car tomorrow for a petrol on the way home…

She's selling it or she wants you to sell it 🙂?

Check it at a Tesla SuC if you're near one. It'll rule out any possible app causes.

I think with ionity you pay first then plug in, worth going back and trying it yourself tho (and setting the app up aswell while at it)

    have a look at this

Charging at Ionity without the app is a faff and it's definitely not EV brand-specific.

    ESB and EasyGo relatively straightforward.

I don't bother with Ionity, have never had an issue-free experience.

Shocked at that figure, they offered me 5k less for my red AWD MY, which i laughed at.

That's with the trade-in booster included don't forget, so 28,700 net.

The trade in value is the trade value, the booster is applied to your account seperately

used a Kia charge card at Ionity yesterday without issues. It asked to plug the car in first and then pay.

At the time of the trade in estimate there was 45k on it

    That's some difference alright.

They seem to apply a reduction in value in steps of 2k kms on the ODO

I used Ionity for the first time last year when on my way home from NI after picking up a Leaf. It did take me a few minutes to get it going, but I was calm and followed the instructions. Being anxious and unsure is a recipe for being very upset….especially if you get charged for nothing. I'm sure the hold of funds was sent back to you?

    On the trade in prices…

M3 Awd Black with Nova Wheels, 251 demo bought from tesla so has longer than new warranty still left.

This is without trade in booster…

    Week 1 - 36100

    Week 2 - 32600

    Week 3 - 34600

    Week 4 - ?????

As I didn't accept the 1st offer now I can't have it, can only have the latest offer. This should make an intresting graph by the end of the year.

I use ionity athlone several times with Model Y. I have the app. Never an issue but the process takes a minute or two. The €40 should automatically refund to your payment card when charging hasn't been successful as I had a similar issue once with my ioniq 28.

I see the base RWD Long range Model Y is now available to order. €48,021.

Decent range too. Think this will interest buyers cross-shopping from brands that have let them down.

Nothing worse than trying to talk someone through charging over the phone when they are cold, wet and flustered.

Had it myself a few times , wife calling as the car isn't charging. Now she doesn't even log into car's app never mind the esb or easy go. So it's a right palava.

Real life in action. My wife would be very reluctant heading to a public charge point. If anything went wrong that would be the end of it! I know some people might call this EV FUD but it’s just real life response to new technology which I’m sure will dissipate in time.

Which is why it’s understandable why some people continue to buy hybrids and PHEVs even when those enlightened consider EVs would be a better or equally good option

Same with anything new in life - get into it and practice, then the fear goes away.

Would anyone like to speculate on the claimed range discrepancy between the CPO Model Ys at the moment? I'm assuming Tesla have scanned the cars and for whatever reason (fast charging %?) we have two identical cars with a significant range difference. Both same generation and same battery types?

My missus is the opposite, no fear whatsoever of new chargers and fancy apps. She loves Ionity, they are convenient for much of her long distance trips.

Myself however I stick to Superchargers or ECars, fortunately rarely now.

Everybody is different, something some people don’t like to make allowances for. I’ve no issues with using any public chargers but sometimes they really test my patience. It’s a bit ridiculous at this stage that people can’t simply plug in, charge and pay just like at automated petrol/ diesel pumps without having to faff around with bloody app and such like. All in good time just like late EV adopters

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,885 ✭✭✭eagerv

Absolutely, every charge point should be tap and pay, whatever the kW output.

I suppose my wife had good training in the earlier days with her 28kWh Ioniq.😊

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,575 ✭✭✭creedp

😄 like referenced earlier, practice makes perfect. Was that during the heady era of free public charging? Pretty good incentive to suceed

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,885 ✭✭✭eagerv

Yes, but the free only lasted about a year iirc. We weren't in the very early days.

Never saw her with range anxiety even with an almost weekly Dublin run from west Co Wexford when our daughter was at college.

She left the range anxiety for me at home..😊

It's a strange one alright, have noticed it a few times. Looks like they sometimes quote WLTP and other times they quote what the car says, ie EPA less estimated degradation.

What extras does the Launch edition have?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,501 ✭✭✭✭drunkmonkey

    free acceleration boost

Free hitch, free paint upgrade, enhanced autopilot.

They seem to be now outweighed by better tech, more range and less money.

I’m not seeing any benefit in buying a launch edition at the current price, maybe someone will show me what I’m missing.

As above plus larger wheels and Launch Edition decals.
