Thanks guys. True most homes in Ireland are single phase but its also worth capturing trends of charger used and failures.

Definitely don't entertain Hyundai pinning your car woes on a particular charger, and I wouldn't put it past them to try - very stubborn organisation.

I saw a post somewhere stating that this issue did not show up on 3 phase chargers, something about thermal trips not occurring - I’ll see if I can find the link.

I am just researching as I saw commentary on this being a single phase charger occurrence.

Would this apply to the cars we already bought I wonder:

10 year Hyundai warranty for Europe

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 138 ✭✭mustyrocks

I believe the battery warranty has already been extended in Korea for current owners, so it would be nice to see that here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,131 ✭✭✭xboxdad

I have the ICCU in mind. …8 years on the battery which rarely ever fails was decent already. 5 years on something that can fail every year and costs 5k to repair is what I need help with.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 138 ✭✭mustyrocks

Hyundai has extended the ICCU warranty to 15 years in South Korea.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,131 ✭✭✭xboxdad

I know.. That's why this European 10 year warranty prospect sounds good. …if applied to existing cars of course.

Couple of questions about this if anyone has any insight. My charging completes usually between 2-3AM so i have a bit of scope timewise to reduce the charge rate if it really is beneficial at preserving the ICCU. How many of you have reduced the output of your chargers and what is your feedback?

Once you experience an ICCU failure, does reducing the charge rate after the failure allow the car to charge reliably at that reduced rate? Or does this only work as a measure on an ICCU that hasn't failed yet?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 68 ✭✭dcme

If you encounter this specific charging issue then yes, the drop in charge rate allows consistent charging at ~6Kw - the time difference on an overnight charge is negligible. Whether it prevents the issue from happening - who knows?

My 1st ICCU failure occurred on my home single phase 7kW charger. My 2nd ICCU failure was on a three phase, 22kW charger at work. It tripped the breaker both times, but on my work charger, the charger never worked again afterwards and was replaced.

Anyone know what anti-freeze brands can be used for topping up Inster?

The manual just states to use a mixture of distilled water and "Phosphate-based Ethylene glycol coolant"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,131 ✭✭✭xboxdad

I'd say stay clear of touching that. It may void your warranty and it must not leak in the 1st place. So it's a warranty job in any case.

It's going back into the garage to see what's wrong so I'm not going to touch it - but in general a small top up of coolant should be ok (provided it's the right type as recommended in the manual)

For my first service, the dealer charged me 147.3 EUR for basic service as per the manual. When I checked the Hyundai website, the service cost by the same dealer was shown as 47.5 EUR. Seems like the dealer took me for a ride. I complained to the dealer a week ago. No response so far. If the dealer shoos me away, can I complain to Hyundai?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 771 ✭✭✭glen123

I would. In fact, after each service my dealer rings me asking to leave feedback and to make sure it's not less than 8 to 10 satisfaction or they get penalised .

I've had 30k service done today - together with new wipers that they changed, it was 250eur. They tried to sell me new tyres at 100each but I said I'd get them sorted myself. I was expecting to pay 260 for the service + whatever is their cost of wipers so not sure why it came to 250 only but I am happy anyway.

What service is there on an Inster?

I have a Tesla Model 3 with nearly 35k kms (two years old in April) and all that will need doing is the air filters that I can do myself. Brakes are fine and tyres were checked two weeks ago and are fine also.

We have an Inster since last July but don't expect a service on an EV to cost as much as an ICE car!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 281 ✭✭cromelex

Yeah that seems very expensive, even compared to what I've been paying for service on our EV6.

Some checks, air filter and according to the paperwork, break fluid and wipers. I agree - 250eur for this is a bit too much but then I don't want to invalidate the warranty so have to play ball with them. On the other hand, having paid 20k for the car, I still cannot complain. Btw, got below from dealer's service booking website:

That price is taking the p!$$ but that's not your fault.

I'll keep an eye on the price when ours is due; thanks for the info.

My old man has just ordered an Inster. I think it's the Cross version. Trading a 3yro Tucson PHEV with about 20k klms in perfect condition and putting 1k to it. I reckoned he should have been getting money back on the deal, but whatever.

Wondering what chargers it comes with?

Tucson 22/23 cars with low mileage phev asking from about 32k at dealers and inster cross seems to be about 27k so I suppose a straight trade would be about fair....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 5,874 ✭✭✭...Ghost...

He added €1k to the trade. I think it should have been the other way around because the car is in showroom condition and the mileage is so low. His mistake was going to only 1 dealer. A straight trade would have been one thing, but adding cash to the deal imo was a cheeky ask.

Yeah 1k his way isnt great, but look not the worst deal in the world

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 5,874 ✭✭✭...Ghost...

Not the worst. Same dealer he bought the Tucson from. I'd have recommended he try a few. Glad he's gone full BEV now. Ideal for him.

My dad went the other way and I'm glad.

    Ev6 to sportage

He was never going to have any interest in public charging so now he is freed up

My old man needs a fire lit under his arse to do anything outside of going for a beer the weekend. He has a 13A external socket I installed when he got the Tucson. The maintenance person even said he should submit a written request to have his parking spot officially allocated, but he never bothered. The socket is inactive since they had some wiring alterations, so the the socket is not on a circuit and needs a fresh cable from the junction box to the CU.

With the BEV, he will have get the cable connected, or be inconvenienced by public charging. With the PHEV, he just ran the car with an empty battery most of the time.

I just removed his hardwired dashcam from the car this morning. The battery was at 0%, so I've plugged the car into my EVSE 😪. I bet there are as shít load of PHEVs driven like this and never charged.

So a week before I was due a 30k service, the charging rate started dropping after 30min. Rang dealer - they told me to set current to 90% and things have been working fine.

Last Friday had a 30k service done. Last night I noticed that car is charging at 4.2kW instead of 6.4. Went to check the car - they set current to 60% when they serviced it and never told me! Really annoyed as I would have woken up to a not fully charged car as I ran it down to 5% if I hadn't checked Zappi before going to bed. They must be worried about ICCU if they changed it to as low as 60% which is absolutely no good to me as I drive a lot.
