The Times reports that a father has shot his 23 year old daughter dead after an argument about Trump.

This is truly a cult in the Jim Jones sense of the word

Yeah but did he write it or a junior WH staffer?

I read about that the other day - tragic but it looks like your man had alcohol problems so whether that was a factor...?

Is that the stuff used in Roundup?

Can you give me a link to that post/study? Apologies I am only dipping in to the thread so missed it.

I'm waiting for somebody to chime in with "but Biden...".

Alcoholism is probably required to be that devout to Trump. You have to kill the brain as much as you can.

It is indeed. I got a bit of pushback when I suggested that RFK Jr might not have always been the devil incarnate - he represented claimants against Monsanto. I was also told that glyphosate is safe.

Here's a link (from the Guardian which seems to be generally acceptable here - it was widely covered elsewhere.) It's important to note that the shenanigans in this case are widespread, especially the ghostwriting of scientific papers.

So what? I'd rather see pro-Trump people on this thread than have it 100% "We hate Trump" posts which get very repetitive and frankly boring. I want to understand why people still support him and his less known backers. I want to understand what the Trump voter mindset is. Yet people seem to want to hound those folks off the thread immediately (often for likes) and refuse to debate with them. It happens a lot on Boards to be fair. Calling a lad a traitor...I don't know.

Thanks Aero. I have always had my suspicions and arguments re Monsanto and Roundup. Used it once ever, never again. We live in a very dishonest world now.

I'm not a fan of the name-calling either, especially as a first resort. I'd prefer robust engagement with the content of posts. We can all learn a lot from proper discussion.

There's also the lovely irony that name-calling rather than discussion or analysis is no.1 in the Trumpian playback.

Personally, I dont have an issue if someone wants to defend Trump but at least have the courage to admit it and not spout the usual pretence nonsense that we're told on here

Agreed. And to be fair they are both informative/balanced posters generally (Frank Bullit & RoyalCelt) but I used that interaction as an example. The Trump stuff does get people very agitated. I'd recommend taking breaks from US politics at times 🙂

Indeed. You would think that in the internet age, and particularly AI, we'd be able to spot the dishonesty a bit more easily, but people tend to believe what they want or need to believe.

I feel I need to re-state that I'm not anti chemical (I use a lot of them), anti- drug, anti-vax, anti-business etc. I'm simply pro truth: if we're going to use any substance, it's not too much to ask that we are properly informed of the risks based on science. If we don't know what the risks are (and that's often the case) then that should be said unambiguously.

It's all well and good hoping for proper debate, but generally defence of Trump's latest idiocy, whatever it may be, tends to be "but Biden…" or outright lies.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 14,219 ✭✭✭✭Cluedo Monopoly

Agreed. I haven't been tracking their utterances closely but people should always nail their colours to the mast. In Irish politics thread I don't think there would be any doubt that I am anti FF/FG. Point remains, I much prefer to see both sides of the argument and good open debate. I guess we live in an increasingly polarised world too. Trump will come and go but his backers/movement will remain which is worrying.

Agreed, I know we're not supposed to discuss other posters but I hope the mods will be OK with me saying that the two posters you mentioned tend to be polite and measured, and their posts add to the discussion. Given the subject matter it's probably a surprise that there isn't a lot more aggression and nastiness.

I think we need a new word - "politics" seems inadequate to describe what's going on in the US atm.

Or religion. My family don't really drink but they're very into the church finger wagging thing and Trump.

Oops I didn't know we aren't supposed to discuss other posters. My bad. I'll leave it at that so.

Yeah the US is a mess. I talked to a friend in NJ last week for an hour. He was born and raised in Galway but got the Morrison visa in the 80s. He detests Trump and is married to another immigrant but said he isn't seeing any ICE activity locally as yet. He said there is tension in the air and most people won't openly talk about Trump etc at work. But for the most part he is just getting on with life. His biggest headache was trying to dig his driveway out from two big snowfalls!

You said yourself you only dip into the thread. If you had been here following the interminable nonsense that is put forward as argument you might be less hasty to accuse the thread of lacking open debate. If you care to go back through even a few pages and find the efforts to put forward solid points and policies rather than 'but Biden' and distractions perhaps you could bring them to our attention. We have been asking for 10 years for examples of actual policy and positive actions of Trump. So far there has been nothing.

Ok. Bondi used the "but Biden" excuse yesterday so it's not unique. Debate the point and prove them wrong is an option.

For the most part I liked Biden but I will never ever forgive him (or Trump) for allowing the alleged war criminal Netanyahu to commit a genocide in Gaza with USA arms. Granted Trump was/is even more reprehensible with his disgusting Netanyahu love-in and attacking respected institutions like the ICC.

😀, you are doing it yourself! And a 'both sides' argument too! You were asked to find some worthwhile posts that showed the pro-Trumps have anything resembling an argument, and you respond with a diversion to Bondi and a 'both sides' on Netanyahu. There is no 'debate the point', just as you have done, there is always the 'move the goalposts' and sideways slip.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 14,219 ✭✭✭✭Cluedo Monopoly

I didn't know we were debating a point. I don't really want to go back any further looking for "but Biden" posts. I will gladly take your word for it, honestly. I was actually agreeing with your statement that Trump supporters and administration use the 'but Biden' tactic because it was in the news just yesterday. I was also adding that Biden wasn't a saint.

Yep, something truly stinks about the whole doing something for nearly a century and then suddenly, out of the fucking blue, not doing it any more.

I've read a fair amount of the interactions with Bondi and wanted to set some out below...

    1. Bondi faced bipartisan criticism for redacting Epstein co-conspirators abusers while failing to protect victims.

    2. Rep. Thomas Massie asked how a list of victims unredacted names got published. She accused him of having Trump derangement syndrome.

    3. A group of Epstein survivors was present. Bondi refused to speak to or even look at them.

    4. When asked how many Epstein survivors have been totally ignored by the DOJ, every single one rose their hands.

    5. Bondi went on a bizarre rant about how great the stock market is.

    6. Bondi brought flashcards with insults prepared for every member of the committee.

    7. The committee noticed Bondi had a list of Democratic members’ search history. Her DOJ had been spying on them

    8. Ted Lieu called Bondi out for perjuring herself. To which she yelled “How dare you accuse me of a crime!”

    9. Rep. Becca Balint asked if Bondi knew of Trump Sec. of Commerce Howard Lutnicks ties to Epstein. Bondi exploded. She accused Balint of being antisemitic.

    10. Balint's grandfather was killed during the Holocaust.

    11. Jasmine Crockett realised that Bondi was not going to answer any questions, and so spent her five minutes listing the awful things Bondi had allowed to happen

I know that these congressional hearings tend to be performative, but this was utterly disgusting.

Elect a clown... Expect a circus

I saw lots of this yesterday on WhatsApp etc. Might be more prudent if MM and some of the other politicians give this lad a wide berth and just let the consular officials deal with it. There's another 6 lads in ICE detention. Perhaps they would be a better representation rather than dying on the possibility that our man may have drug and other charges hanging over him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,664 ✭✭✭Patrick2010

Her whole approach to these enquiries is to run the clock down so she can avoid answering the question by:

    1. Introduce whatabouts…."I find it interesting you never asked Merrick Garland that " etc….
    2. Introduce something in the questioners past she thinks reflects badly on them but has no relevance to the topic being discussed.

How does she get away with this, surely there should be some mechanism for stopping the clock until she answers. A lot of the questions just needed a yes/no reply but she'd go off on some bizarre tangent.

Mod: Can we move away from the discussion of other posters please. Certain posters were using it as an excuse to have a dig as usual. Pointed warnings and bans are going to follow if people can't stick in the lane of discussing the topic without throwing around insults like confetti. There's been enough leeway on this for too long and it stops now. If you have an issue with a post, report or ignore it and move on.

    Thanks for that explanation.

I heard a clip earlier on Newstalk - absolutely bizarre. Apart from what she was saying it was the way she was conducting herself. She's clearly not fit to hold any office.
