we trapped pine Martin at mams house after it wiped out her chickens. Never seen such a killing machine. No stopping that beast, we never got chickens again. Released it in the woods.

Heard a dog ( male?) fox and vixen call to each other tonight. They must have met up as the calling was very near.

It's one of the few night noises we have in the irish countryside.can't think of many more ???

A few years ago I came across to foxes mating and it frightened the be#asus out of me, it was at dawn and a bit foggy and all I could see was the outline of some type of animal but the shape of it was like nothing I'd see before, he was completely on her back with his head on top of her's, I could see 4 legs on the ground and what looked like an almost square body and a square head, I thought it was some kind of deformed sheep that had managed to break in with mine, I walked towards it and I noticed another fox sitting a few yards from them, the vixen took off with him on her back and he fell off , only then I realised what I was looking at

Coitus Interruptus, If there's a happy ending they usually stay locked together, even turned around 180 degrees sometimes.

There's a lad close to us selling free range chickens never seen a boiler in his yard. We have hens they are let out at 10 am every day and locked in at 6 in the evening

    Very low today.

Came out this morning, puncture in the van. Proceeded in the pissing rain to change the wheel, got nuts open but rim was locked in place. Herself was dropping the young lad to school so had to walk to the farmyard to get the sledge. Not in good form.

Dirty wet cold morning so while I was there said I'd open the to shed to let cattle come in and out as they pleased from the rain.

Cattle are in a yard beside an open tank with a slot to push the slurry through with the scraper. The slot is 500mm high. Bullocks rear and 2 legs facing me. Poor animal must have been lying in front of the opening and turned his head back through it during the night. Head and front legs ended up inside the opening. A 2 year old store bullock

That opening is there in the wall almost 40 years.

Only ever keep 12-15 cattle over the winter months. Out of 14 this winter I've now lost 2, I'm **** sickened, and more so upset for the animal and how it died. At least the last lad most likely just dropped for a heart attack.

This evening I have to face how I am going to get him out. He is basically like a calf now coming backwards and caught on the shoulders.

    A low day.

Sorry to hear, it goes around every farm. Get him out as soon as you can and away out yard and move on. It's just another lesson you've learned that that hole needs attention for it not to happen again. Chin up 👍🏻

Chin up. We all have days like that. If you have a wheel stuck to a rim, loosen all studs and leave slightly loose. Slam the brakes and it should free it from the hub. I have a similar set up with an opening to the slurry tank. I was always afraid calves would skid and fall in tru the opening. I hung a length of channel on chains on the inside of mine, hanging half way down. Easy take it on and off.

That's a tough day, keep the head up and concentrate on each small job. You will look back in years with pride on how you dealt with hard day's for you and your family.

you are allowed to be pissed off. I think sometime we can feel embarrassed or out of line to be upset and frustrated but it’s only human. Give yourself 24 hours to be annoyed and then move on

Got him out after just over 2 hours on the kango. Being collected first thing in the morning.**** day but it's done now, just need to move on.

Fair tired now. Thanks folks 👍

This is a bit less dramatic than the previous posts. Crap does happen and wishing you better now @CHOPS01

I was pricing around things that I have to buy. One thing was 40 euro cheaper than another place. Another thing 20 euro cheaper. These are delivered as well. The dearer place I'd have to collect. That's 60 euro saved just by looking around.

The dearer place built up a name for value. I guess that disappeared when they built up a customer base and then wanted to double down the margin.

It pays to not just accept a price but make sure and look around first.

I know it's easy said all the time, but better outside the the door than inside.

Your missus and young lad are safe and sound.

All the cattle, sheep and vans are going to be long gone before us hopefully.

It's annoying and disappointing but in the round, it's not a loss that's going to put you up or down.

I'm glad you posted and read the replies, - a lot of us these days have partners that don't understand farming and how losses affect us. They often have their own things going on and maybe bigger in their worlds.

Mind yourself, mind your missus and the young lad, the rest is only the background picture.

Have eufy cameras here, no subscription, about 40 each if they have power via usb plug, have 48 wifi for 12 a month. Want to keep it all in the one app. So tis handy.

Now I'm thinking I want a remote light in the shed. Can't find a eufy wifi plug....

Now i need another app.... ffs

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 2,036 ✭✭✭Packrat

My boss has eufys all over the place, - no power needed - 10 year battery apparently.

    €200 ish I think.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,586 ✭✭✭have2flushtwice

The little ptz ones I have do need power

I've one in the box like your boss has, I can't get it setup. Mine was about 120 I think.

It's solarand outdoor, zoom but no pan. The 2.4ghz isn't matching, I need to fiddle a bit more

Yep, the smart home / IOT landscape is a pain in the butt when it comes to manufacturers own eco systems. I think Eufy may have discontinued a lot of their smart devices.

I use Home Assistant to join all of these eco systems with one APP, but there is a fair bit to setting it up initially. Everything 'smart' in the yard/house is connected to the one APP regardless of manufacturer, but some were less straightforward than others to get working.

Shelly make great smart switches for lights and are probably the easiest to integrate. Not sure about Eufy, but I see at least some integration with Home Assistant mentioned online.

In the cattle sheds I have the light switch for each camera beside it, I have them disconnected at the moment as I'm not calving cows anymore and I'm in the middle of moving them to better monitor the dairy/beef calves when they arrive.

I'm not much good at haggling over price but I always phone around for prices on stuff. If nothing else, you know you're not getting your pants pulled down by any particular merchant (including the one you're a member of!)

I've been pricing milk powder and meal the last few days. It's only a 5 minute call in most cases.
