It doesn’t explain why they weren’t brought in as a back up either…if he couldn’t get ahead of Ross Byrne then that’s speaks volumes

You are absolutely correct. I pointed this out in an earlier post. Neither Madigan or Conor Murray know feck all. All you really need in studio / commentary is a few lads from boards.ie

You are welcome to take Madigans expert view.

But here's the problem; do we have a quote for what exactly Madigan said?

I've listened to the podcast. Open to correction here, but I don't believe he specifically mentioned that incident in it?

To move the conversation along… as far as I can tell, I think VdF has now start 42 of the last 50 Tests, the other 8 being:

    • 2022/22 AI's - Timoney vs Fiji
    • RWC Warm-up - Doris us Italy
    • RWC - POM vs Romania
    • 2023/24 6 Nations - Doris vs Italy
    • Summer Test - Timoney vs Georgia
    • Summer Test - Kendellen vs Portugal
    • 2025/26 AI's - Timoney vs Japan
    • 2025/26 AI's - Doris vs Australia

I really think we need to start Timoney for this one, and probably against Wales also.

I don't think we'll get beaten by any of Italy, Wales or Scotland but we'll get thumped by England. If we lose any of the other games then we have serious concerns.

And have Bryn Ward on he bench.

Would like to say the problems with Ireland performances are not on vdF.

Edit: (And its not on SP or JC or HB)

Even getting thumped by England would be a bad look, even if we lose we need to realistic be competitive otherwise we continue to have reason to be worried.

Dont think that is being suggested at all but we cant talk about building depth at times and building options if we nearly always pick VDF at 7 as its not good if say he does get an injury at a key time. Looking at alternatives for some games shouldnt be seen as a bad thing or that VDF is off or there ia a correlation with Irelands performances

    Timoney needs to start

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 5,796 ✭✭✭ionadnapóca

    Yes I understand the point.

    And it should have happened in Nov. In numerous positions. 11, 12, 13, 15, 3, 4, 6 & 7

After the Piss Poor Paris Performance (PPPPTM)I would keep vdF and make changes elsewhere to signify "intent"

I personally think the previous Nov was possibly worse; stuff like VdF starting every game. Beirne and Doris playing every minute. Lowe playing every minute vs the Tier 1 sides. Casey getting 22 minutes vs Tier 1 sides.

Midfield is a massive problem area now. Be interesting to see who he goes with here. There's a case for Tom Farrell, just for some creativity from midfield, but he's hardly a long-term option either. I really feel like we need to start seeing Osborne there more too.

This period feels like the biggest test of Farrell's career, some big selection calls ahead over the next few weeks.

Maybe it wasn't Madigan. Murray/Horgan/Kearney discussed it at half time of the match on Virgin Media

I think VFD's position should be up for grabs. He doesn't do anything wrong or make stupid decisions, he's just not as good as he was a few years ago. He seems like a sound man who gives everything on the pitch, but that's not enough if his performances aren't great.

A few years ago he was genuinely world class and he won a lot of the 50:50 (which is a completely subjective, finger in the air measurement). I feel he made meters after contact, pounced on the breaking ball, ran good lines to be an option in broken play and tackled with venom, and he doesn't/can't do it anymore.

He never has a rubbish performance, so he's hard to drop, but I think it would be fine to seriously look at other options like Timony or Ward (or maybe Jack Willis if the rumours of him moving to Munster are to be believed)

    Beirne looks very tired.

Been ran into the ground by Ireland and munster.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,711 ✭✭✭✭El_Duderino 09

He's similar to VDF. Not doing anything wrong, just doing it as a 34 year old. Lost a bit of pace and energy. No discredit to any of these guys. They're great for their age, but their age means they're not as sharp as they were a few years ago in their prime.

I think iteland is in a bit of trouble in the time between waiting for these lads to age out until they can replace them. That's the nature of these things. It's hard to drop once-great players

Would agree as there should also be a reward for outplaying the player you replaced.

I think we could see Doris at 7 & Conan at 8 v Italy though.

Depends where he wants to shake things up, there isn't goin to be a raft of changes though.

Joe Mc should have been pulled when he gave away that brain dead penalty in front of the sticks. 2 tries down, its not like he had a heap of bodies on top of him & couldn't hear anything the ref said.

He got a central contract 2 years ago. Is a test Lion etc & really should be kicking on re penalties conceded, he's having a v good club season & should be the leader of our pack going forward.

Hits the nail on the head re: McCarthy. Couple of years ago you’d be willing to forgive him the odd stupid penalty because he plays on the edge, he’s learning, etc. But he’s 25 now and it’s getting a bit beyond a joke because he just isn’t learning. So it might be the case that he’s just a dumb player and you have to question if it’s worth continuing investing in him. Which is a real shame because he has the physical attributes to be a great player, but if he doesn’t have it upstairs, there’s nothing that can be done. I’d replace him in the 23 with Edogbo for Italy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,759 ✭✭✭✭aloooof

Agreed, we really need McCarthy to 1) stop giving away those daft penalties and 2) step it up in terms of dominant tackles.

Doris too seems a good bit off what we know he can produce.

Edogbo needs to at least be on the bench for this one (and I think he will, to be fair).

Trimble on Second Captains calling out some of the scapegoating online with regards Prendergast.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 109 ✭✭Joma4good

I’m likewise concerned with Doris, he seems to be getting no or very little go forward in contact and has returned to his butterfingers self of a few seasons back, I’m not sure the captaincy sits well with him either. He hasn’t appeared to me to hit it off with many URC or international refs, not sure if that’s all on him as we see lots of other players chipping in and messaging from the touch line, which must be tricky for him to the mouthpiece for. Too late now as he’s closer to the end but JVdf always struck me as someone who was calm and would have kept refs onside.

Thinking of how passive/off the pace we were v France I wonder did the Aki suspension have an impact on the players.

The irfu got out ahead of the urc disciplinary panel & were correct to lay down a marker in that regard as our discipline has been on a downward slide with a while, club level included in that.

I just wonder was there an over emphasis on it & the group have the handbrake on re aggression or intent as Farrell put it.I take that Aki's situation was to do with ref & back chat but he was clearly wound up for the game & didnt exert the energy as he didn't start. Not excusing him just wonder does anyone else think it may be a factor.

Some signal had to sent to address our discipline

Re Edogbo that depends on if he got ip to speed between being not selected & team announcement v Italy...only time will tell

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,500 ✭✭✭almostover

Last Thursday was as close to a rubbish performace I've seen from VdF. Didn't collect the offload from Sam early on and spilled the ball under very little pressure out wide that lead to a French try. Only that so many other players were so much worse spared him from any meaningful criticism. Nick Timoney played well when he came on and should be given the start IMO.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 42,758 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Timoney was outstanding when he came on, he needs to be rewarded for that. He has to start.

And VDF hasn't shown the same level of form for Ireland in recent times.

I don't care how he's doing at Leinster, it's how he performs in the green shirt that's important.

Amazing that all of these ex pros can call it out for what it is, yet all of culprits here who are waiting for him to breath in through his mouth and out of his nose seem to think there's nothing going on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 645 ✭✭✭CONSI

Good analysis, question has to be asked of the coaches and what they are doing if we cant set up to defend a 5 meter scrum. C.Prendergast shouldnt have had his head buried, TO'B should have overrun his defensive line…you feel that wouldnt have happened down the other end. Really sick of this line that we didnt show intensity in the 1st half, how can you not show intensity in an awa international v france..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 326 ✭✭Rayray98

It’s also a natural phenomenon how an entire team walking into contact and missing 40% of their tackles in the first half can be articulated down to who was at 10….

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 326 ✭✭Rayray98

Also it must be said that a lot of the blame lies with Stockdale there, getting sucked in before the offload leaving Crowley with too much to do.

I mean, you recently labelled me a culprit, who "seems to think there's nothing going on." Right?

But when you look at what I've actually said:

Now, is some of the criticism over the top? Yes

Once again - misrepresenting what's actually been said. That's obviously going to draw a reaction.
