Martinez has been absolutely huge for the team as well somehow gets missed by many fans, maybe their isn't enough points to be scored by praising him, but his passing ability and ball progression has added so much to the team and he is very smart in stopping counters too

Glasner is leaving at the end of the season and has some credit in the bank by virtue of being one of their best ever managers. Amorim was writing cheques he couldn't cash.

TBH I thought Palace would sack Glasner after he threw his toys out of the pram, but I guess they've calculated it's less risky to keep him around to make sure they stay up, changing managers mid-season could go very wrong.

On the Mainoo/Bruno/CM/No.10 conundrum for Amorim….another aspect is that Mbeumo doesn't look like a number 10 at all in what we were told RA wanted. He looks an out and out striker/wide forward. So Bruno should have been no.10 in his system anyway.

You'd be wondering at times what exactly RA was seeing when he looked at a game.

Great result at the weekend, we were well on top even when the Red card happened.

I would love to see us dish out a proper battering to someone, it feels like it is in us.

It just feels like watching United, and that is a big thing. We are back baby.

Ok very good but has nothing to do with what I said or what the other poster said

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,339 ✭✭✭Iseedeadpixels

I love him and the fact the general thread hates him makes me love him more.

He certainly is one of those players that opposition fans hate, but he really does bring so much to the team, he is constantly playing line breaking passes or passes breaking multiple lines, opposition can't press him either he is just so good on the ball for a player playing in defense, hopefully he stays fit this time around and be the one shining light from ten hags time

Very surprised how well Martinez has come back.

I thought the nature of the big injuries he had would have had a big impact on his mobility and agility, turning acceleration, ability to quickly push from left to right (as opposed to acceleration upfield).

Delight he looks to have not lost a step. He was a bit of a worry at first - that Bournemouth game for eg, but he looks to have shaken off the rust.

It was only logical to doubt if Martinez could come back as strong after yet another heavy injury. He's been incredible.

Luke Shaw another one who surprised me. I think he's been almost ever present this season.

Particularly pleased that Martinez is thriving given the waves of bitchy criticism that Scholes & Butt have sent his way.

Has been available for every game so far. Rested for the two and only cup games.

My favourite thing about Martinez is his attitude. He is exactly the type of character we need in the dressing room.

We have badly missed that over the past number of years, everyone going missing in those big games/tough atmospheres. We need strong leaders in the team that can help the younger lads through that

I hope any recruitment over the summer will be those types of players

I would hope that the club would sit down in the summer and approach the really top targets out there (Ancelotti and Enrique) and if they don't want to come on board, then Carrick can get put into consideration along with the managers the next tier down.

I'm fearful of when/if European football is back on the schedule he won't have the experience and the performances drop and we back to square one. Of course, the club needs to invest to add depth to counter that also.

Luke Shaw usually has a great season prior to international competitions. This will be his last WC so it's reasonable to expect him to be super motivated. Next season, probably not so much.

When Shaw has stayed fit, he's been good. I don't think him staying fit is down to wanting to play for England in the WC.

with some talk about us being interested in tonali in the summer, lewis hall i think would be well suited. shaw just cant be relied upon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,133 ✭✭✭keeponhurling

Is he genuinely in the frame to play for England at the WC ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 49,304 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

has to be surely? Who are the alternative left backs? MLS seemed to have a good shot at it last season, but Arsenal aren't giving him game time. The other is Nico O'Reily? If he stays fit I can't see him being left behind.

He's just such a good 'footballer' alongside being a high quality defender.

Always looks in control of the ball, has a great eye for a pass and doesn't feel pressure when pressed.

I'm delighted he's come back as good as he has. The ability was always there, just the injuries were the issue.

As an aside, and as good and all as the recent performances have been, I've been disappointed with Shaw's attacking. It's not a strength of his I know, but Carrick seems to what him to create width in attack, while he seems to want Dalot to invert into a more central position in build ups.

Shaw just hasn't been making runs in behind at all, he is very passive in creating that width.

There's serious room for improvement with an attacking LB I feel.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 49,304 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

Its why i want Dorgu to be tried there.

I don't think Dorgu will ever be a first choice winger for us, but I could see him becoming a first choice LB. He has the attacking pace and willingness to make runs behind and overlap.

He also has fantastic workrate, and seems very good at following tactical instruction.

His positioning as a fullback would obviously need work… but I think there is real potential there.

If Shaws fit he goes to the WC, can play LB and LCB.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,678 ✭✭✭BenK

Mount's availability is so frustrating. There's a decent player there but you just can't rely on him at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,532 ✭✭✭scottser

To be fair to Shaw, he's been great for us this season but I think Tuchel wants pacier full backs. O'Reilly, Mitchell or Colwill will probably get the nod over him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 266 ✭✭Bot1

    Agreed.

Carrick's system could suit also as in possession he sometimes likes a 3 2 5 formation with one of the full-backs pushing up to join the front 4.

Dorgu could thrive in that type of situation as he has the athleticism to get up and down.

Score predictions for West Ham, who will get the goals?

Will your man finally get his haircut?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,532 ✭✭✭scottser

He's so getting his hair cut. We're scoring at least 3, one of which will be a Cunha worldie and another will be a Maguire header from a corner. If Villa get beaten by Brighton your man will probably book himself in for a back, sack and crack too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 898 ✭✭✭Gus Ivey

    Haha loving the positivity.

Cunha on the left VS Wan Bissaka will be an interesting match up. AWB was brilliant for the hammers at Old Trafford. Lets hope Cunha can give him a torrid time!

I do fancy United to win 2-0 or 2-1 with Bruno and Cunha with the goals.

Would also be very eager to see what he can do there.

I like Shaw but his attacking returns are really really poor for a full back in the modern game.
