He won't do that at any big club because in 99% of those clubs there's a sporting director who will be building the squad for the medium term with a bit of input from the manager.

We have two months of playing the bottom teams now, lets see if we can put some wins together

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,392 ✭✭✭jesuisjuste

Next six games is one mid-table against Sunderland, and then it is all bottom third teams. Normal times expectations should be 18 points out of 18, but these are not normal times…..

Hodgson wasn't in charge for the FA cup, Dalglish took over from Hodgson, his first game back was the FA cup tie against United at Old Trafford, Gerrard got sent off after a few minutes, despite all that, the performance was decent and lost 1-0. The club was in disarray at the time, it's not today, very stable, supposedly one of the best run clubs, yet we have an unbalanced squad despite a huge spending spree last summer. It may not be as bad as the Hodgson era, but, on the field its probably worse than at any time since.

To be completely fair, this team worth well over £1bn is far better than Hodgson's Poulsen, Konchesky, Shelvey, Spearing et al. He did well to get them anywhere near 12th at the time. This current team are the defending champions. They can't even defend a 1 goal lead, nevermind anything more. Saying that the current team in 6th is better than Hodgson's in 12th is easy. But after the first 17 games this season, Slot was averaging 1.24 points per game which was worse than Hodgson's 1.25 record. It may have picked up a little since then but the quality of what's on offer certainly hasn't.

We couldn't do it in the last two months, what makes you think we can now? Frustrated by Burnley, Fulham, Sunderland and Leeds (twice) and many of them at Anfield. They'll drop points like confetti and we'll struggle to get the Europa conference. It's a shame we can't play Spurs or Newcastle every week.

Our next 2 games are away to teams who who won and drew at Anfield already this season...

Across our 25 league games this season there have been 10 instances where we score a goal and then concede one within the following 15 minutes.

I'm struggling to see where the next win is coming if I'm totally honest.

    Some rambling thoughts

Thought we should have brought Jones on yesterday. After the goal and before they scored, we were defending deeper and losing momentum, could have done with taking a break with a substitute, drag it out for a minute or 2 and reset. Bringing him on at 1-1 was too late imo. Need to get better at the dark arts and slow down play, etc.

Wirtz needs to learn when to shoot hard, he's not going to get the time to place every shot in this league. It's very annoying that he can get into the right places, but his shooting lets him down at times. These passes into the net may work against Newcastle but not against the better teams.

I think the age of working with the smaller squad is over. I think Arsenal are top of the league in part due to the depth of their squad and can carry injuries more than City and Liverpool. Think we're at least 2 players shy in the squad this season. Obviously the center half we didn't get on deadline day and not replacing Diaz too. Costs us plenty of points this season.

Also we struggle to get the ball up to pitch as we have no out ball. We really miss a Mane in this regard. Some one who the ball sticks too and get us up the pitch. Firmino used to have trickery and diaz was able to dribble up the pitch. The ball bounces off our front 3 too often, think Ekitike needs to learn the trade, Salah is unfortunately passed his prime and all parts of his game are struggling including this, but Gakpo is really frustrating, just seems to be weakest players with his physique.

Very hard to see how we finish in the top 5. We have no momentum, always a new defeat around the corner. Whether he stays or goes depends on where we finish. Not sure if they keep him if we finish 6th but 7th or lower and he's definitely gone.

This is also really damning for me, linked below is a list of our all-time 50 biggest losses at Anfield across all comps.

    https://www.lfchistory.net/stats/games-biggest-losses-home

There are 10 from this century:

    2005: Chelsea

    2007: Arsenal

    2014: Real Madrid

2015: West Ham (Rodgers was sacked 4 games later)

    2021: Man City

    2023: Real Madrid

    2024: Atalanta

2025: Nottingham Forest, PSV Eindhoven, Crystal Palace

Don't you give up on us 🙈

    Untitled Image

I'm choosing to believe that the team we saw yesterday between 45 and 85mins can turn up again.

Sunderland (a), Forest (a), West Ham (h), Wolves (a), Spurs (h), Brighton (a), Fulham (h) before the derby, all very, very winnable games. Now I'm not naive, I know we won't win then all, I know we've been playing some absolute sh-te recently as well, but there's definitely potential in those games to go on a bit of a run

The losses don't even hurt anymore. I don't know how much longer the club can stand by; Slot might have the backing for now, but every manager has the backing of their club until they don't.

On the bright side, at least there'll be no Pravda-esque Round Table Discussion this week.

The defeats always hurt but I'll dust myself down and be back predicting wins just in time for Sunderland, don't you worry!

While i hate us loosing i did expect a loss yesterday. It was the way we lost yesterday that particularly hurt as I felt we played well in the second half up to the goal

Sure by March 15th Spurs will probably have joined the list of teams this season who sack their manager and then get better than us.

EDIT: Even 17th place Forest are close to this ffs, in the 17 games since sacking Ange and moving onto their 3rd manager of the season they've gained 21 points, while we've gained 24.

One thing I never mentioned above was that I think Kerkez is really starting to come into his own. Thought he was our best defender in the terrible first half.

We have a better squad then results suggest and that's why I think Slot needs to be changed. I don't think he's getting the best out of the players we have.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 13,979 ✭✭✭✭Electric Nitwit

I agree, Kerkez did well yesterday, particularly with Haaland's chance in the first half. He always struck me as trying too hard when he started, maybe being a bit nervous, he seems to be settling now so hopefully we'll see the best of him regularly

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,190 ✭✭✭✭Osmosis Jones

Yeah there are gaps in the squad for sure but the players we do have are serious quality and that's not being utilised well at all this season.

We certainly have far better squads than Brentford, Sunderland, and Everton….who are all within 3 points of us.

Yeah the quality/depth thing might hold through as the reason we aren't going to win the league again but it doesn't hold as to why we are level with a Brentford team whose squad was devastated

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,190 ✭✭✭✭Osmosis Jones

I'm also not sure how much depth can be blamed when Slot doesn't use half the squad anyway.

We've only used half our subs in our last 2 games (2 vs City, 3 vs Newcastle) and all 5 of them came on at 84mins or later.

Now I don't think any of the guys on the bench are world beaters, but it's the manager's job to get a tune out of every player, not just his favourite 11. A club like Liverpool want to be playing twice a week and competing for every trophy available. You can't do that while writing off half the squad.

Im in the slot out camp now, sooner he goes the better chance we have of making top 5, he has had enough games to get us right this season and there's no improvement, he is also a bad motivator and man manager, he got lucky last season with salah being fantastic and other teams inconsistent

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,510 ✭✭✭✭TitianGerm

Just need someone who'll actually link up with him in front of him now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,820 ✭✭✭✭noodler

Gakpo gets goals and assists tbf, be wary of getting rid of that on the hope Kerkez is able to contribute those.

There hasn't been much evidence so far bar an asisst against Newcastle which was actually a ball from deep in his own half in any case.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,190 ✭✭✭✭Osmosis Jones

Another one that baffles me is the usage of Jones, I was saying earlier in the season that he's one of our better midfielders at the moment (having a better season than Mac and Grav imo).

Since his start against Burnley on January 17th Liverpool have played 5 games, across those 450 minutes' worth games Jones has only gotten 53 minutes (11 minutes in our last 3 games).

He's at worst our 4th best midfielder and we start 3 midfielders every single game, it makes no sense to me that he's not getting any minutes.

Is Kerkez your new guy to bash since Nunez has left? Gakpo has to be the most frustrating forward we have this season.

Disappointed with the result, Anfield was rocking yesterday.

If a loss on Wednesday means slot gets sacked then yes im hoping Sunderland trash us, slot should have been fired 2 months ago, our season could have been salvageable then, now even with a new boss 5th May be a tough ask

Probably no Salah mid week, few places reporting his grandfather has passed away.
