Add Taine Plumtree to that list.

But if we want to bring up u20 results, what about the 2022-2024 groups that were unbeaten in 15 6N matches (14 wins and draw) and then reach the last 4 of 2 JWC’s?

Lawrence, enough, stop trying to make this narrative happen. You’ve already been proven wrong, now it’s time to be the bigger man and own up to it.

I don't think that there is any powerful argument to suggest Ireland will fall anywhere near Wales. Their fall to be below Fiji, Scotland, Italy in the world rankins is unprecedented. Ireland is going through a rough patch but their structures in place for clubs and country is still better than all those teams.

Ireland’s issues so far have only cropped up against SA and France this, against NZL to some extent too, but we are still a class above all these sides mentioned. The absolute worst case scenario for Ireland is being 4th/5th in the world but even that will only be temporary I suspect.

Wales and Ireland have absolutely nothing in common, Wales are exactly where they deserve to be after the way they have neglected rugby in their country.

To a kiwi dad and South African mum. Raised in Wellington. That Taine Plumtree.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,271 ✭✭✭lawrencesummers

That’s him, He’s as Welsh as Hansen Irish.

but this started discussing imports who qualified through residency and those players were a cornerstone of Ireland success while Wales never relied on such imports for their successful years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24 oso92

Irrespective of Wales' use of overseas players it's completely disingenuous to include the likes of Faletau, D.James and Ian Evans (who make up the bulk of caps in ths list). All moved to Wales at <10years old.

If we're using birthplace / where you lived in the first few years of your life our international contingent would include the likes of O'Gara, Heaslip and more recently Joe McCarthy and Cormac Izuchukwu.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,888 ✭✭✭Sudden Valley

That does nothing to support the argument that ireland is going to follow Wales into the hole they have dug for themselves.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,271 ✭✭✭lawrencesummers

    Ireland have two problems.

1.Not Being unable to import quality anymore.

2.The lack of development and breakthrough of a next generation. The squad as it currently stands needs gutting and rebuilding, but the replacements don’t look any way near ready.

They dont look ready but Ireland has four clubs sides, three in the top 6 of the urc. They are not like Wales whose clubs have been stuck in the doldrums for a good few years, and will now lose a club side, and we have the advantage of more club players than Scotland, Italy and even Fiji ( if we want to compare them with Wales). I can see us finding hard to compete with SA, NZ, Fra and Eng but to compare us with Wales at 11th in the world is just unnecessarily pessimistic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,271 ✭✭✭lawrencesummers

we are currently not competitive with Fra / SA and NZ are now a 10 point team better than us, we will see in two weeks how we stack up against England.

    The issue then is trajectory.
Ours is downwards, ain’t no doubting that, the only question is where our floor is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,888 ✭✭✭Sudden Valley

The floor is not Wales. I think that is the consensus among the replies to your statement in that regard. Wales have had the unfortunate confluence of negative factors of having a few bad managers in a row and mismanagement of their finances and club game.

The floor is probably fifth in world and a bad world cup , but one where we beat Scotland. I dont think Scottish, Italian, or Welsh supporters would share the view that they are going to overtake us anytime soon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,590 ✭✭✭Yeah_Right

But Wales did go hunting for Welsh qualified foreign players. I remember the late 90s and early 00s in NZ there was a lot of discussion about the Welsh poaching players. One of the funniest things was it turned out Shane Howarth didn't have a Welsh granny 😄

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,888 ✭✭✭Sudden Valley

I think the grand slam winning squad of 2018 only had aki and stander as the foreign players. I think we can still have success without as many foreign players being eligible to play for Ireland. All our competitors will have the same problems.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,271 ✭✭✭lawrencesummers

That depends who you class as our competitors.

Because the way I see it for the next while is we are in a fight with Scotland, Italy and Wales for 3rd place and while might we have enough for them currently that could change

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,888 ✭✭✭Sudden Valley

I think we are still competitors to England given we beat them last year. I think we are at the last legs of this coaching regime so it is hard to judge how bad we are until we actually lose to teams below us on the rankings.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,271 ✭✭✭lawrencesummers

Another way of cutting that onion is how we performed against Wales last season versus what they did to Wales this season.

I think England are gonna open us a new one in two weeks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,043 ✭✭✭Paddy_Mag

I dont know. England were ok v Wales but it was hardly an inspiring performance in large parts. Wales has 4 Yellow cards, were down to 13 men twice.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,758 ✭✭✭Dave_The_Sheep

England will likely beat us, and comfortably. Doesn't really prove much other than England are an improved side from last year, and we're not as good as we were. It doesn't mean anything long term though necessarily.

Possibly but we have had one game this six nations to judge the curent team on. We are being compared to teams that we have all beaten in the recent past. I can't even recall what our last bad result against teams not in current top four in the world was, maybe Wales in 2021.

We will definitely know after the next few weeks what our standard is.

England beat Wales 68-14 in Cardiff last year. We beat England and Wales last year.

What's cutting your onion got to do with anything this season?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,271 ✭✭✭lawrencesummers

YC come from being under pressure and making mistakes.

There's a hadleigh parkes shaped hole in that list.

    Christ Tshiunza as well.

The big issue for Ireland at the moment when we played France x2 and SA over the last 12 months is out of the starting XV how many could you count had good games, and by good I have a set a low bar so even just a 7/10 performance? The France game on Thursday I could only count maybe 2…SA and France last year wasn’t much better.

If we are continuing to go into game with +10 players playing at a 6/10 or worse we are going to struggle to be competitive against any top team, and Andy Farrell needs to give these players a serious kick up the backside as the performance levels we’ve been getting from them has not even been close to good enough.

Scotland are useless, granted the conditions were terrible but very static, loads of mistakes, sloppy lineout and mediocre skills. Italy were very good in the first half but succumbed to the conditions in the second. They have potential to trouble Ireland, particularly if we are lacking in intensity as they are totally committed and up for it. And loads of ball players on that team.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,043 ✭✭✭Paddy_Mag

Some of the penalties they gave away were just plain dumb. Had nothing to do with pressure.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,500 ✭✭✭almostover

The only chink I can see with the current England team is that discipline still seems to be an issue for them. They gave away 12 penalties and 2 YCs against an awful Welsh team that they were beating easily.

We could make hay if we can put them through the phases and put some stress on their defence. They always seem to infringe at the ruck if they are any bit stretched. Taking them on in the air would be madness. We'd have to keep ball in hand and play a high tempo game to stand any chance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 326 ✭✭Rayray98

I also think their defence isn’t that amazing, they conceded a decent amount of tries in the autumn and they left loads of space out there in open field on Saturday that a better side than Wales would have taken advantage of.

The big thing we need to bring to have any chance is intensity, if we continue with this static walking into contact we might as well not bother showing up…

I think alot will depend about the Scotland v England game. If they dont get a result there, England will be under a bit of pressure. Haven't won a six nations since 2020 and their last game against France away, they will be desperate for a BP win over us.
