None of your examples are people celebrating his killing?

There's a difference in not having sympathy and celebrating.

I was actually site banned from Reddit for a post a few days after the Hamas attack in which I estimated how many palestinians would now die based on UN figures from all previous retaliations. I think at the time my estimate was around 30K. I think it's uncontested that we're well past that estimate.

That post was a genuine response to a basic genuine "what happens next" comment on the world news subreddit. Interestingly the ban didn't happen until two weeks later when there seemed to be a concerted effort to erase all criticism of Israel.

I never contested the ban as when I looked at the post there was no way I could rewrite it any less dispassionately.

All I thought was "well this is reddit now, it was fun while it lasted."

Boards certainly has issues, its resident contrarians and cranks out themselves easily but it's never easy to read some of the vile disgusting inhuman spewing from the US being enthusiastically regurgitated here.

But I've always found Boards is probably the most practical resource for on the ground queries. It could be just better at banning the hate speech, let them swim in Reddit and X.

Boards suffered a perfect storm about 15 years ago. Overzealous mods banning for the slightest thing and a crack down on craic and a load of sh1t posters started to dominate. Facebook groups were growing in popularity then and they hoovered up disaffected users who never came back.
As for Reddit, I tried to figure out the interface once or twice and gave up. It was so user unfriendly.
started posting here again after too many people joined bkuesky. It got too crowded over there!

I use Reddit quite a bit but I dont go near r/ireland or most of the Irish subs

    I do like r/irelandshitedrivers though 😁

Would someone explain what exactly happened with the Ireland subs that a lot keep away from them now?

I stay away now because they became misery pits. r/Ireland in particular is awful for it.

If you want to constantly read about how Ireland is an awful place to live and our government are the absolute worst then you'll love the place. r/Ireland is pretty much full of student types, idealists and fantasists who are convinced that there's nothing good about this place and everyone is out to make their lives as hard as possible on purpose.

It's just not fun to read and if you contribute and go against the grain you'll be downvoted into oblivion.

This would be the opposite of my experience if I'm being honest. It seems every second post on r/ireland is something specific to "town" that is just local nonsense that belongs in a dublin Facebook group or on r/Dublin.

If you try and make out that investment is required in "the rest" of the country as well you get downvoted and abused

There's a place for both in today's internet world.

Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue

I've never been able to figure out how Redit works. I've googled things and Redit answers come up but after the first one or two replies I get lost.

Personally I think both are doomed because AI will answer the question without the need of either site

Boards is immensely better than Reddit.

With Boards you can have an actual discussion with people or even just one poster. Reddit becomes a complete mess because of the voting system, plus there are mods over there that don't even pretend to be unbiased. FFS, if the rumours are true Ghislaine bloody Maxwell was a mod on a subreddit for years.

Reddit is simply not a place for a good discussion. It is, however, good for questions and answers sometimes, where there's is a definitive answer to a straightforward question to be had. I like it for PC related stuff or technical issues and for gaming questions it can be useful. There's also some good subs for photos too. r/oldcoolschool and r/oldcoolcreepy can be a complete time sinks if you've little else to do.

But for discussion, Boards will always beat it hands down, every single time.

Just turn it off. As of now we can do that easily.

The only AI shite I see is the top result on a Google search and I nuke that by hitting the "web" tab.

Just wait til all of this bollocks is really built in. There'll be no escaping it.

For interesting content Reddit is far better, it really does have all kinds of everything. When it comes to proper discussion though this is where boards is much better.

Anytime I look at the r/Ireland page, it's complaining about RTE, complaining about the GAA, beyond stale Father Ted quotes, did everyone migrate to there from here after the change?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 927 ✭✭✭bored65

I made an in length post praising a new Star Trek series (very obscure subject unless one is a nerd) and similar on Reddit

On Reddit it ended up with a lengthy discussion with about 10x the comments, here it was met with hostility and snide remarks, This is in a discussion about a fictional tv series ffs

Similar hostility with a post in infrastructure wondering why other European countries do projects better to the point I had to point at the thread subject wondering what’s its purpose if it can’t be discussed and examined

On Reddit being an asshole without anything constructive to say gets you downvoted into oblivion

    Reddit is shite.

    I'm partial to your abracadabra
I'm raptured by the joy of it all

I moved from Boards to Reddit a couple of years ago. Never liked how you only really see whats upvoted as opposed to boards thread style. Reddit was a novelty for a couple of months and then you realise it’s the same shite repeated over and over.

Back to boards a bit more now.

I really don’t like Reddit. Have spent a bit of time on there in recent months. Boards is a much better format imo. Strongly considering ditching it altogether.

I've used Reddit a few times if there's a television series or film I really liked, I'm also a regular in the general television forum in Boards. The one thing that frustrates me about Reddit is when you click these comments and it sometimes brings you back to the starting of the thread, quite annoying and gladly Boards doesn't have that

I prefer boards to reddit. I use both. I think reddit has more of an addictive "better check for updates" experience, no doubt on purpose. Reddit is also very USA focused, very divisive, full of bots and only fans models, full of agenda and I suspect being socially engineered by other governments to create discourse and make people generally argue with each other, just a step above twitter.

I don't think the reddit upvote / popular post at the top layout is conductive to longevity (yes i know you can change it). On here there'll be threads running years, over there is blink and you'll miss it, the next shiny thing for people to argue over is there on the frontpage.

People typically praise the smaller subreddits, but in my experience they're frustratingly over-run by folks looking to learn about the subject. Eg guitar subreddit is 90% "is this a good beginners guitar?" posts, it's the same for other subjects I'm interested in. Whereas the dedicated guitar forums I'm member of go into way more detail and have better discussion. Thinking of it another way, i suppose reddit is a broad look at a nearly endless list of topics, but once you scratch the surface you need to dig very deep to find anything of substance. It has it's uses but shouldn't be taken as the final word on anything (despite what the llm's are training themselves on).

It can be very funny though, certainly had it's uses. Like everything on the Internet it's nice to take a break from it every now and again and come back and remember why you liked it in the first place. My negative outlook above probably shows that it's time i logged out of it for a few weeks.

Also adding that when i started using reddit the best way to view it was via third party apps. They since made that basically impossible, so you can only use their own ad-riddled app full of promotional posts, or else desktop, with a similar experience, so for that point about all else, f*uck them

Reddit is useful in someways in that you get international discussions that can be useful. However the Irish sections can be quite iffy. Lots of bot posts aimed at "Karma farming". r/Ireland is very bad for that. Every article from the newspapers gets posted dozens of times. And it is extremely partizan in places. Say the wrong thing and you'll get a pile on and ban especially in the r/Irishpolitics section (yes I was banned there. Because I made a post that I thought was reasonable but was deemed critical of Catherine Connolly's stance on Russia by a mod). So personally I use boards for Irish stuff and reddit for international. And there is some very dodgy porn on there. Laws around things like the sharing of intimate images doesn't seem to apply so I'm not sure where the site is hosted but I would be very very very careful about what I search for on there especially if I was at work.

Got reinstated lately after a ban,but I need 50 karma to post in the Ireland sub.

Haven't the will to go looking for karma.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,817 ✭✭✭touts

You got reinstated to the Ireland sub on Reddit? That's very unusual. The mods there are renowned as among the worst on reddit. They kick out anyone who disagrees with their personal and political views and never reinstate them. I don't visit it often because it is so full of karma farming spam and hate (the abuse directed to some celebs is shocking at times). But I do have quite a few connections on Reddit who all got booted out of that sub and got very abusive messages from the mods on the way out. They reported it to Reddit in general but didn't get anywhere as far as I know. I might let them know the mods there may be reinstating people but I don't think they will be too bothered about going back in.

I find Reddit hard to navigate. Maybe it's an age thing, but I prefer a forum like this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 18,346 ✭✭✭✭cj maxx

I tried reddit just for liverpool fç news , but as mentioned , navigating is rubbish .

I'd personally find it easier to navigate but prefer the old forum style compared to Reddit.
