It is terrible yes, and you mostly have to ring them on any matter rather that finding a way to do something online. I think their lines close at 5pm as well - very banking-in-the-00s-like 😂

I drive a Skoda Octavia 1.6 Diesel I spend €65 a fortnight on diesel. Roughly do around 15000km maybe a bit more. Approximately €1690 on diesel a year.
based on your figures not much of a saving driving a EV.

Would I be right in saying that?

Does energypal.ie no longer offer the option to edit usage? Current recommendations are based on the 4 hour usage with energia, but would not be using the 5-6am time if another option was better

The examples in the post you quoted were for all electricity usage, not just the EV charging usage, which was included.

Depending on what your current electricity tariff is and what your usage looks like (and even assuming you don't have solar and a battery), it'll always be cheaper to charge an electric car at home than to pay for diesel regularly.

If you are careful about it and charge at home at the cheapest rate possible, you'd probably only spend a couple of hundred euro a year charging (but not including the one off cost of installing a home charger), but that tariff might not suit you. If you were on a day/night tariff at the best rate you could find, you'd probably still spend less than 400 a year on charging I suspect, but like everything else, it all depends on how you use your energy whether it's right for you.

    Ignore below, I found

    Pinergy Feedback - Page 6 — boards.ie - Now Ye're Talkin'

Energias rates and FIT are getting poorer so looking at trying to make use of the 3 hour EV window with Pinergy. Renewal in March. Any advice in dealing with them?

    15,000km at 5.5km/kwh=2727 kwh+10%(waste)=2,9999*.14c=€420

5.5km/kwh is about 18kwh/100km, so change that number depending on the efficiency of your car
I pay about 14c night rate.

It's worth noting that you're burning diesel instead of potentially using renewable energy and materials. You'll burn about 60,000L of diesel in your lifetime at those rates (assuming you use the car from 20-80, adjust based on your expected lifetime) - If you have time, you should really watch this (warning long watch)

Watched it the other night, well worth it. Also goes pretty nuclear for the last third of it.

Watched about an hour of this, it's a fairly interesting video. The bit about corn being used for fuel Vs a solar farm is crazy.

I just switched from BG to EI, staying on a day/night tariff.

Nearly 60% of my usage is on night rate.

Im Just sorry I used Switcher.ie instead of doing it directly on EI own website, as I assume it would have been quicker doing it myself. Ah well.

Coming to the end of my energia ev plan, the good thing about the plan is the cheap 4 hour charging window. In the 4 hours 10kw batteries are charged, car gets charged, dishwasher, washing machine and hot water all working during this time.

Need to get others opinion on the other companies charging window of 3 hours what is achievable in the 3 hours?

Flogas fixed electricity offering 25.18 day and 12.64 night

If you ring them up and ask them what's the best deal they can do for you you can get a pretty decent discount. The only thing that bugged me last year was that a month after I did that, they increased their base rate by 25% pretty much wiping out the "savings". But given it's unlikely they will increase rates again for a while you could do well out of it. The 4 hours was the biggest thing for me.

Yeah great deal that on D/N,seems to be the best out there but you aren't getting any credit though obviously.👍

I have a 15kw battery, 3 EV’s, Heat Pump, and in “theory”, i could go for Pinergy - “Night Time” which is next best priced option to current EV Smart Drive (24%disc), and avail of the 6 cent night rate - inc vat, and much higher export rate of 25 cent, but have decided its not a runner.

First off, Getting circa 28kw into one of our EV’s per night, is infinitely better than 21kw. It is true i don’t always need to get 28 into the car, but it just adds so much more flexibility,

Then, you have potential load issues if you reduce charging window to 3 hours, i have heat pump water heating timed for 04:45 as at that stage, 15 kw battery is full, it charges at 4.8 kw per hour, and charging curve slows down at around 94%, so i have washing machine and dishwasher timed for before 5am also.

I blew the fuse in the main fuseboard last year, and got it replaced with a trip switch, which has not gone off yet, but i often hit 14kw, for short periods, which is above the house load limit. The risk is bigger in winter as the heat pump could come on as well while charging EV and Battery, if you have :

    EV charging: 7kw

    Battery Charging: 4.8kw

Heat Pump heating: varies but can be 2kw

Moving to a 3 hour window means, 25% less car charging in a session, and potentially serious load issues also.

I looked at upgrading household load max, but its thousands to upgrade.

There is a relatively new SSE: Smart EV max tariff, which has a 6 hour cheap night rate, from 11pm to 5 am, which would solve all the above issues, and offer huge flexibility, but rates are too high, 12.13 night inc vat, 33.76 day inc vat, and annual Standing charge on this one is also €65 higher than Energia, Overall the SSE Smart Ev tarriff, would add circa €480 to my annual bill, as my current blended night rate with Energia is 8.50 cent inc vat. If that SSE night rate was 10 cent inc vat, i’d probably move to them for the pure convenience and flexibility.

I considered Flogas but a few scary posts in the other switching thread about them scared me off them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 158 ✭✭Bannerman1969

Currently with Flogas and had reason to ring customer service - absolutely shocking. 45mins on hold each time and was told to email customer service as they could sort it. Waiting 7 days now on customer service and rang again today to be told they will respond within 20 days. Rates are good though.

They're an amateur rural organisation that has grown way too fast to handle the level of service commitment they now find is the hallmark of a nationwide energy supplier.

Rates are strong though - as long as that keeps up they will have a certain market share.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 75,487 ✭✭✭✭L1011

Owner is a 22bn a year Irish energy firm, they just seem to completely misunderstood how to scale customer support to match market share.

They have reasonably large consumer market share in petrol sales and home heating oil both in Ireland and abroad but I think Flogas is their only consumer energy supplier.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,512 ✭✭✭MojoMaker

Like I said, an amateur rural organisation struggling to comprehend the new service commitment vista.

Their monetary value is largely irrelevant, but the principles underpinning a modern company have lagged far behind their growth. Maybe it will change for the better in the future.

Good rates though - long may it continue.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 497 ✭✭Liam2021

Called energia today to see what my new rate will be when I renew.

Max discount is 10% of rates Ev smart plan

    4 hour window .0942

    All other times .4041.

Seems expensive but only company doing the 4 hour window,

Yeah energias getting less and less of the best option.

Possibly run the numbers on likes of the flogas or electric Ireland that have day/night/peak/EV rate.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,512 ✭✭✭MojoMaker

You're getting hung up on the 4-window, it really isn't material at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 497 ✭✭Liam2021

I can manage to charge 2 ev's, charge a 10kw battery, run the dishwasher, washing machine and hest the water. If I go with a lower window I won't be able to manage all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,512 ✭✭✭MojoMaker

Go to a 9-hour night window and stop worrying about a few cents, you're overthinking it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 497 ✭✭Liam2021

Ahh if I do that it will cost me an extra 400 a year as I use 9000 units yearly most if this is done in the 4 hour window at 7.4 cent. A few cents adds up over a year and wouldn't be long eroding the credit built up from microgen. Looks like Energia are still the best for my circumstances

same here, using > 11,000 units during 4 hour window, blended rate is around 8.5 cent as everything above 1,000 units per 2 months, is at higher rate.

the lowest 9 hour smart night rate, is around 13.50 cent with Flogas so 5 cent more, and € 550 extra annually, so not overthinking it at all !
