Just got a text from PureTelecom, my install date in March 5th.

Exciting times really…I've had cable broadband since the late 90's through a local company when i lived in my old house, and when we moved rurally 3 years ago i've had to use Starlink, so finally excited to see what full speed fibre is really like.

Are sky now charging the extra 3.50 a month from April on now aswel?

I got them in September and when seen this never seen it in the contract but now thinking are they starting to do it now for new customers.

Providers can increase prices within the contract term but if it's not a set increase stated within the contract at the outset, you'll have a period where you can leave the contract when a price increase is happening.

Sky is one of the providers that doesn't have a set increase every year within their contract so if they increase prices, you'll have a period to cancel the contract. Sky do usually increase prices every few years.

Digiweb specifically say there are no CPI increases and Virgin currently has a "price freeze" promotion saying the price is locked for the contract term.

All the providers have this now listed on their yearly increased. I don't think there is any at this point that don't have a 3 to 4 increase in subscription. Due to inflation i would gather

Not surprising tbh. They are going through major problems and turning off their LTE network.

    Heavily debt.

They need to acquire customers and keep

Thats why i avoided Vodafone and Eir cause they had the indexation increase in April but sky didn't mention it. Looks like its not avoidable anymore.

Strangely, i only see it on there 500Mb option and not there 1Gb in there website.

Yeah Sky have done this in the past, only increasing the 500Mb price and left the 1Gb unaffected. They don't increase prices every year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 857 ✭✭✭Stewball

I've got that 500Mb €30pm deal. My contract isn't up until June. Will this planned increase allow me to leave early?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,446 ✭✭✭NotShero

Yes you'll be able to leave the contract if the price increases. You can go into your bills on MySky and see if your price is going up in April's predicted bill. Eventually they should email you telling you about the increase and should list the period of time you have to leave the contract.

It's my understanding sky of all the providers do purposefully implement additional checks and blocking of IPTV solutions . So I suppose be mindful.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,877 ✭✭✭pureza

isn’t the EU proposing to make the indexation rises illegal?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 884 ✭✭✭amdaley28

We'll probably have paid for the next ten years before that happens 🙄

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 857 ✭✭✭Stewball

My predicted April bill has the new price increase included. Time to start shopping around.

    lads I'm confused.

On NBI checker my eircide says I'm available for prep order.

I have had fibre in my house since 2022 which was installed by Eir. It comes from a black back on a pole behind the neighbors house straight into my house.

Is NBI a completely different system to the black box on the pole I currently have?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 75,476 ✭✭✭✭L1011

Yes. It'll be a different black box on possibly a different pole.

There shouldn't be overlap in coverage, but it clearly does happen! Or the NBI site is wrong and an order won't be completable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,446 ✭✭✭NotShero

Yeah there can be an overlap. If it is the case, the provider will choose between OpenEir and NBI when you order broadband. If NBI is chosen, it will need a new install with another fibre cable and ONT. They won't touch the existing OpenEir install.

You can check which access networks are available to you here -

NBI take-up promotion, "Get it DUNNE", fronted by former RTE newsreader Eileen Dunne

Discount vouchers include cultural icons GAA, IFA**, Dunnes Stores, Penneys, and Ticketmaster

** IFA Telecom are also a retailer for NBI, though fairly pricey.

Got a call from the installer today who was at the house doing pre works before my scheduled install on the 5th of March.

He said there is going to be some intensive digging required to complete the job, but has assured me and concrete, tarmac and grass that has to be dug up, will be repaired in such a way i won't even know they've been there.

Has anyone had to have anything like this done before? I honestly don't mind about the tarmac or the concrete, but i don't want the lawn messed up. The complete install including all dig works and connection is now happening in around 2 weeks.

You are in a National Broadband Plan intervention area. These are areas finalised back around 2019 and are defined as areas where no commercial operator was going to run commercial fibre. The NBP contract was awarded on this basis to NBI.

Since then OpenEir has encroached on these intervention areas around the country, as they're allowed to do.

NBI are still obliged under their NBP contract to run their fibre to each of the premises in the IAs, hence the overrun of fibre and duplicate DPs. NBI are prohibited for now from providing fibre outside the IAs.

Under the NBP contract there is a €130m encroachment fund (part of the €500 million contract assumption or contingency subsidy) to compensate NBI if a commercial operator encroaches into the NBP intervention areas, but to the best of my knowledge none has been drawn down and NBI will continue the rollout into the encroached areas.

OpenEir are playing silly buggers imo, rolling out fibre into NBP intervention areas and not rolling out fibre to so called commercial viable areas they said they could do during the planning phase of the NBP. OpenEir and SIRO are not prohibited from rolling out fibre into the intervention area.

Are NBI and Éir supposed to share poles where possible?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 16,493 ✭✭✭✭The Cush

Where possible they do and they pay openeir an annual rental fee on a shared basis where both use the same poles

Around my area NBI installed their own poles where no openeir poles were available. Next door to us they installed a new pole to allow a shorter run of fibre across a road to a house.

Just a bit of an update after getting an NBI install. Went with vodafone as I wanted a landline.

Install was quick. Installer did a good job although I will move the box about 30cm but there is spare cable for that.

    This is what gets installed

    IMG_20260209_115838.jpg

spare cable is wrapped around in the mounting plate so there is spare if you want to move it.

    Installer has the "modem".

Initially went to a vodafone shop and they wanted an extra €100 for the install. Online chat said no charge so ordered it that way. Saved chat incase the install charge ends up on the bill.

Ordered 1Gbps + phone and kept old Eir landline number.

After install took about 2 1/2 days for the number to port over. Temporary number working in the mean time.

Speed test is showing a solid 900Mbps or higher and upload has never been below 100Mbps.

The connection was made to the pole nearest the house. We are the only house near that pole and the installer said there was only one possible connection on that pole.

Chatting with the installer and I elucidated the following information….
His longest install was 1.2 kilometers all pulled through underground conduit.
He had installed another connection that had 26 poles installed to get the connection to the customer.
Take that as you will believe it or not?

Wake me up when it's all over.

Maybe 🤔. A roll of drop cable is 500m, a roll of trunk fibre 4,000m

Around my area a separate crew did the long fibre run from the DP to the house and then installer arrived later and finished the final run of fibre into the house and installed the ONT.

In our case the DP is maybe 20m away so the job was all done in about 2 hours.

Two hours is actually very reasonable for a full install.

It was. The installer that was assigned to us that Saturday didn't show for whatever reason so another installer working in the area was asked if he'd do ours after his own assigned jobs.

Luckily for us he took the job, Saturday rate, short cable run from the DP, wall anchor was already in place from the previous copper line, entry hole was already drilled.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,735 ✭✭✭The Continental Op

I don't think start to finish my installer was here more than 2 hours. Would guess an hour and a half if that.

Very efficient guy. 15m or less from pole and he did the old drill in from the wall to the side of the window which wouldn't suit everyone.

Same guy did next door which was a complex install in the roof with a 100m run and iirc he was only there 3 hours.

Edit> Just moved the ONT (Optical Network Terminal) as I wanted a bit more space under it for the "modem".

Moving was very easy there was spare fibre cable wrapped around the cable tidy in the base of the unit. If I'd have thought more about it at the time I would have asked the installer to leave a bit more spare leaving a few more options. Note they take pictures of every part of the install so will know if its been moved and it goes wrong ;-)

Got a call yesterday to say the engineers have availability this Saturday morning for install, so i've been pulled forward a few days, awful handy that they're working on Saturdays, no need to arrange a day off!
