I used to be able to do this in the past.

Before broadband when transmission rates were slow I would sometimes switch off pictures and just read the text.

Some time ago this facility was seemingly switched off.

Is there any way to reinstate it?

It would be a great way to turn off the intrusive adverts -although it would make navigation a bit confusing.

Do any browsers allow one to turn off images these days?

I know Chrome and Edge allow you to disable them in settings (same with js etc), assume the other browsers do too

    From AI

Most major mobile browsers can disable images, but only a few make it easy. Chrome and Firefox support it directly through settings; Safari on iPhone does not offer a built‑in toggle anymore.Below is a clear breakdown of what works on Android and iPhone, based on the latest available information.

📱 Mobile Browsers That Allow Disabling Images

✅ Google Chrome (Android & iPhone)
Chrome supports disabling images through its content settings.

    • Go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Site Settings → Images
    • Choose “Don’t allow sites to show images.”

    ✅ Mozilla Firefox (Android)
Firefox allows image blocking via its settings or add-ons.

    • Similar to Chrome, you can disable images in Settings → Privacy & Security → Images (depending on version).
    • Firefox also supports extensions that block images.

    ⚠️ Safari (iPhone)
Safari used to have a “Disable Images” option in the Develop menu, but newer versions no longer include it.

    • Even with Settings → Safari → Advanced → Show Develop menu, the “Disable Images” toggle is missing.
    • You would need a third‑party content blocker to achieve this now.

    📱 Summary Table

    | Browser | Android | iPhone | Built‑in Image Disable? | Notes |
    |--------|---------|--------|--------------------------|-------|
    | Chrome | Yes | Yes | Yes | Works via Site Settings → Images |
    | Firefox | Yes | Limited | Yes (Android) | Add-ons can help |
    | Safari | N/A | Yes | No | Requires third‑party extension |
    | Edge (Chromium) | Yes | Yes | Yes | Same method as Chrome (Site Settings → Images) |

the AI answer is specific to mobile browsers; certainly for firefox anyway. i don't see that setting in the desktop browser menu.

FWIW in firefox, in the desktop version, it's possible to disable images. navigate to

    about:config

    and set

    permissions.default.image

    to 2.
