Currently 3.6%, and as high as 4.65% September 2023 . But 1% at the start of 2021, and generally much lower than at present over the years.

    https://www.nsandi.com/historical-interest-rates

Two separate economies, and we are part of the ECB as EU members. Their rates were generally low over the years, even minus at times, and this was reflected in the offerings to savers from all of the financial institutions. Again only since around 2023 have we seen foreign banks offering high rates. But always factor in DIRT when making comparisons.

If you think Prize Bonds are bad, you wouldn't like the Credit Unions. Ironically when Prize Bonds gave us the 1% best rate since 2014, that coincided with holders cashing in a lot more than in the bad years.

    Premium bonds…..

    • Have a much lower investment ceiling (GBP 50k vs PB’s EUR 250k per investor)
    • For Irish investors carry a currency exchange risk which could very easily wipe out any returns and eat into capital
    • Require the investor to have a gbp bank account with a uk bank or building society
    • Are linked to an economy that went basket case during truss’s 49 day rein and that is likely to go even further down the toilet when the glorious farage era kicks off

So thanks very much for your concern, but most of the regulars here are well aware of these issues and have made their investment decisions based on their research and the totality of their requirements

I posed a question earlier but worded it horribly, so I’ll try again.

Imagine someone were to buy 100 bonds in one lump sum; Would it be possible/probable that all the bonds would begin with the same two integers? Like AAxxxx of HJxxxx for example.

And if so, would that have any effect on the selection by RNG? If all of ‘my’ bonds contained the letter A, I’d be heavily reliant on a single letter for any or all wins.

It’s more a question of curiosity, than much else.

Makes zero difference how your holding is composed. The principal repayable for £5 bonds issued before the Euro is €6.35. It is €6.25 for Euro denominated bonds. From the Prize Bonds Regulations:

"Each bond included in a draw shall have a chance of being selected for a prize in proportion to the principal repayable in respect of the bond."

Not just possible or probable but certain. If you bought 100 bonds next week in one transaction they would be consecutive, e.g. your cert would show 100 units starting BKG222100 and ending BKG222199. The only exception to this is where the first bond is close to the top of the BKG prefix and stretches into BKH, e.g. for 100 bonds you could get a certificate showing BKG999955 to BKH000054.

And if so, would that have any effect on the selection by RNG? If all of ‘my’ bonds contained the letter A, I’d be heavily reliant on a single letter for any or all wins.

It should have no impact on your chances of winning or having multiple wins in a draw, so long as the random number generator is working correctly. Regarding the numbering system, there are four “number” formats

000001 to 999999 the original series first issued in 1957

A000001 to Z999999 which followed the above and kept going up the 80s

AA000001 to ZZ999999 which followed the above and lasted until June 2015

AAA00001 to ZZZ999999 followed the above and has so far got as far as BKFnnnnnn or thereabouts

Not all “numbers” were issued. There were lots of gaps in the earlier sequences where certs were manually issued from pre printed blocks. Some ranges were skipped to avoid the risk of visual confusion e.g. Qnnnnnn was never issued as it could  be confused with Onnnnnn (but oddly QQ range was subsequently issued. @dxhound2005 and I have identified the following gaps: Q, U, AA or AI but there may be others. DK stopped somewhere around DK250000 when the Irish Pound was no more and DL opened immediately for Euro denominated bonds.

As promised. UK Premium bond wins on two accounts both with 50k one £200 the other £300.

Not jinxed after all and just a little better than the average past wins.

Edit> Sorry thats January looks like I'll have to wait till tomorrow all I know for sure is I don't have one of the big prizes https://www.nsandi.com/prize-checker/winners (links to current month).

How did you get the results? I can't see my February results until tomorrow 3rd Feb. on their prize checker page or on the app I use.
Are you looking at the January prizes by any chance?

    For balance;

    • Investment ceiling: Make no difference to ROI. A max 50k in UK bonds returns more than a 200k investment in Irish bonds. ROI matter much more an investment.
    • Currency exchange risk goes each way. A swing would could just as easily double a profit as wipe it out. Net neutral.
    • UK Bank. Yes, including N.I bank accounts.
    • Economy. Yes, but the economy, markets, and inflation have tended to return more than 1% over time. Irish prise bonds don't beat inflation. So over time they are very very unlikely to decreased in useable value.

I’ve put €5,350 into bonds this week as I said I would do to allow me to think about that to do with this part of my rainy day fund. So I’m “back in the game” now.

    €75 for me today.

The number of €75 prizes in the February draws is 8,712 down from 8,720 in January. The newest bond to win 02 January BJZ988990, newest 06 February BKF994879. Sales of around €31.3 million.

My estimate for sales in January 2025 was €33.4 million. Actual sales January 2024 €35.046 million. That estimate for January 2025 is in post # 9999, page 334, so 700 posts on the thread in the last 12 months.

Nothing for me so far in 2026, 6 wins in 2025 total €450.

I see a very old bond 62204 won €75 euro today. 68 year old bond, if the person purchased it in 1957, age 20 their age now would be 88, it's more than likely this person has gone to their eternal reward, a lot of these ''1957 bonds'' probably go unclaimed unless maybe passed into next generation ownership.

I think I mentioned previously that I have a first issue bond dated 1st March 1957 in my possession. My grandparents purchased it for my parents as an engagement present. I also have the receipt. Currently in my 95y/o mother's name, with her consent and that of my siblings I intend adding my name to it to keep it alive and in the family ! It hasn't won anything (yet!) but we live in hope.

Up to 06 February the first one million bonds have won 10 prizes in 2026. They won 83 in 2025 and 108 in 2024.The system maintains a record with the last 4 years winners. Loses one draw every week but adds the latest one. It also keeps details of unclaimed prizes, with no draw dates. The lowest number is 293, but they do not keep a logical order, at least on my PC. And unlike the ones with letter prefixes, it is not possible to search a range, say the first 10,000 bonds issued.

The highest number is 999887, so no indication that the complete one million was not issued. I intend to get the number of winners for all the other millions up to the start of the Euro for 2024 and 2025. This will spot if there are any other missing or incomplete prefixes, and will give a very good handle on how many of these bonds still exist. Comparing what they won with what brand new millions win. There is plenty of time, since 2024 and 2025 will stay up for another couple of years.

The number 293 appears on Page 29 of 183 Pages, when put in bond number order on my screen. 1,823 records in total. This does not show the prizes won by the first million bonds up to 2022, where the winner got their money. This is bound to outnumber the unclaimed prizes by a very large margin.

    Prize Value Bond Number Status

    €75.00 287416 Uncashed

    €75.00 287493 Uncashed

    €75.00 293 Unclaimed

There are plenty of high value prizes awaiting claim, these are top of the heap.

    Prize Value Bond Number Status

    €1,269.74 178429 Unclaimed

    €1,269.74 225351 Unclaimed

    €1,269.74 408578 Unclaimed
