He's burnt his bridges with them I would say. They don't want him back.

I wouldn't rule anything out. Especially at Rte.

If upper management ever changes, the new guy/gal in control might see him as worth a shot.

Marty Whelan left and came back. But it was an entirely different set of circumstances. If Ryan was smart, he would keep his head down for a few years, fading out of the collective consciousness and then gently start to filter back into RTÉ. Currently, there would be too much consternation if he made a comeback. That whole saga was never really dealt with in a satisfactory manner for the TV licence holders. Nobody seems to have learned anything….

I'm not surprised in the slightest. RTÉ is his safe space, where he's a big fish in a small pond, and he must have felt like a king every time he walked through the doors of Montrose.

If he does return, so be it…no one has to watch or listen to him, and I certainly won't be. I just hope if he does come back, that his salary reflects his true value on the open market. We now know that the BBC or C4 aren't banging down the door.

North Norwich Digital may have made a generous offer, but maybe he feels he's outgrown the UK.

We now know that the BBC or C4 aren't banging down the door.

Forget the undeclared top up to his salary, his exit from RTÉ has exposed exactly how vastly he was overpaid and overvalued. The Emporer's New Clothes comes to mind.

Even if Tubs does want to return to RTÉ, I'm pretty convinced the reverse isn't true.

RT isn’t back in Ireland by choice it would seem. We are often only as faithful as our options. He clearly had no meaningful offers in the UK. He’d still be there if that was the case.

If he had any sense he should have pitched himself hosting a reboot of Going For Gold on Challenge TV. He could have stepped into those shoes nicely although he’s probably more Henry Sellers than Henry Kelly.

apparently the ‘mayor of toy town’ is treating us to an exhibition of kindness next Sunday, I believe.

I wonder will MO’C ask any actual hard questions ?? …, genuinely?

or will the JFK biographer be let sprinkle us with some star dust picked up from his epic adventures in the uk.

How lucky are we that he willingly chose to come home and treat this nation of troglodytes to some culture… tubs still culture …

I’d like to start a petition now to raise the TV licence.
it’s the least he deserves ..

He’s a man of peace not of war according to the RTE guide. So expect him to be waving an olive branch as he renters the Rte building

He'll only ever be back in RTÉ as a guest or interviewee.

I'm surprised at him being featured in the RTE Guide. Is someone testing the waters to see what the reaction will be?

why who was on last weeks cover? Does anyone even know? If you are the Rte guide you are desperate to get some attention

You see, Steve, this worries me. You used to be so definite in your view that Tubridy was never coming back to RTE.

Now you're only "pretty convinced"? Has the RTE Guide spread shaken your confidence? It's shaken mine.

Noel Kelly must have Epstein levels of dirt on people in RTE to get that despised failure on the front of the Guide.

If you really want to feel down, take a look at the comments on the RTÉ Guide's Instagram under the cover with Tubs on it. I had to scroll down quite a bit to find a negative one, worryingly. Here's a selection:

"Great to see you back on the cover, Ryan"

    "Look forward to purchasing"

"Great to see you back Ryan"

"Your (sic) flying high…you have a big mark in london and so quickly."

"Ryan Tubridy is the latest in a long line of Irish showbiz stars who have made a great success of going into the media show business world in the UK."

That last one is particularly special. I can assure you no one in London knows who Tubs is.

While I can't say this with any certainty, I imagine the Guide's social media team were kept busy removing the less-flattering comments. But it is concerning that there are some people out there who think he's the best thing in entertainment since Terry Wogan and that he was completely hard done by by RTÉ.

I was also convinced he'd never be allowed back within the hallowed halls of Donnybrook but my 'Spidey senses' started tingling back in August when he returned the 150k out of the blue. And his excuse for why it took two years to return it.. "I had to earn it first", didn't wash with me.

Is the groundwork being laid for his RTE re-emergence?

    Hmm.. worrying times.

    Don't worry about it.

I wouldn’t be “surprised” if he came back or was taken back- as long though that the public aren’t “taken in” by his complete lack of talent and vote by changing the radio dial, then we won’t have anything to worry about long term - he’ll be gone as quick as he arrives.

Radio has changed anyway - the “presenter led” show has greatly diminished over the last few years- RTÉ appear to want less pontification and personally held views from their presenters and just do some light entertainment and spin records - given the absolute tripe forced onto us like afternoon listening on radio 1 for the last 10 years, it’s about bloody time

In the UK, if people know him at all, it is as a half baked attempt to train a new Wogan or Norton who ultimately was not talented enough.

Had a browse of some of the profiles of positive responses on the RTE Guide post.

    Quite a few of these...

The gas thing I can see NK pushing hard for this but a whiff of a return actually happening reignites the whole saga of rte engaging in unorthodox indirect funnelling of license fee moneys.

Is Dee Forbes well enough now to answer questions from publicly elected representatives?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,457 ✭✭✭GSF

well that’s the thing - the only remaining interest in Tubridy relates to his exit from Rte. He needs to keep it alive to try to get publicity for his other ventures

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,688 ✭✭✭yagan

An attempted return may actually force politicians hand to seek legal means to find answers for that which was left hanging two tears ago. And while it is only speculation I can't help but feel that would not do Tubridy any favours.

I wonder if he would have bothered returning the 150K if he had managed to gain a foothold in the UK?

The two year reticence in repayment, and subsequent declaration of willingness "to fall in love with Ireland again" is all very desperate.

As long as the FOI requests keep coming I can’t see Rte taking him back. These have reportedly cost Rte €100k so far so that takes care of 2/3 of the €150k

Claire on her debut day on Newstalk and Tubs have about the same number of posts so far today. I predict that Claire will fade into the background, but this thread will power on.
