Boards is better than Reddit

There I've said it. I used give out about certain things in this place but having had a proper lurk and a bit of casual posting there now with maybe a couple months the place is disturbingly toxic for the most part.

It's filled with toxic, disturbed little people of all persuasions. People with politics of all angles taking joy in people being shot or killed on all sides. Taking glee in doxxing people. Gangs of little gremlins calling for insert person/group to shot. Nutcases from the left and right calling for civil war in the US etc All these things getting thousands of upvotes, I hope it's bots but who knows.

    It's **** mental.

There's a sub called fauxmoi on there and if it isn't bot infested it's user's need some sort of mental health intervention.

Then subreddits where it's total echo chambers if you don't post with their views, it's dissent and down voted or banned.

At least here while people maybe disagree once you are some way civil it can be debated.

I know theres a lots of little sub reddits if you stick to them it can be fun but as whole it's a left a sour taste in my mouth.

One thing I have wondered is, is it possible old school linear forums like boards will make a comeback to counter these type of echo chamber style discussion sites?

Am I the only one that feels this way?

I think Reddit is far better. But there is a place for both.

I never use Reddit except when Google directs me there for some technical information.

    I enjoy Boards.

Yeah, nowhere is without its fanatics, but this place is a sea of level-headedness compared to some spaces. Although Reddit is so huge, it depends on the subreddit. Anything political/social/cultural there though, seems to descend into madness.

Reddit has a huge user base, so whatever you're into, reddit will have an active community for it. Boards is only big enough to support a small number of subs, and most of those are dead. I follow exactly 3 subs here, and might have a poke around a few more every few weeks. I follow about 30 on reddit and am on several times a day.

Going in the other direction, boards has a sub for my county, and it's dead. I go to Facebook for local info. I have no friends on there - that's not how I use it. I just use it to get info or post the odd thread.

never used Reddit, only other involvement with anything online chat related was the old hotpress message board wayyyy back. My last post there was maybe 15 years ago at least, dunno if it’s still going, can’t seem to find it…And another music based one. Didn’t actively decide to stop using either just lost a bit of interest.

Reddit is 90% bots, you'd get as much human discussion by opening Notepad and typing there.

I agree, I must say that I think the Boards format is far superior in terms of having an in depth conversation. Reddit just unravels after it gets to a certain number of posts and becomes difficult to follow. The most liked posts that appear at the top (9 out of 10 times) is some silly immature joke that people riff on for half a page. None of the jokes are ever funny either. It's handy for threads that are more globally focused but boards all the way for me.

Big Reddit user personally it's my go to site. Funnily enough Reddit lead me here from a forum chat about Boards looking for support because user numbers were way down. It's not bad here but it is a bit of a ghost town in parts.

The Irish subreddits have gone downhill now. Basically all of them are regional versions of r/f**kcars. The complete obsession that site has with transport is mind boggling.

Also they act like the place is full of FFG bots or shinner bots but in reality the green party runs the sub. The astroturfing isn't even subtle. Every political post has a top comment which boils down to "this is because we kicked out the glorious and omnipotent greens".

Banned from Reddit for the last year or so,for the stupidest little thing. Maybe that's why the Ireland sub has gone to pot.

Used to be much busier and free to say whatever you wanted, within reason.

Are you sure you weren't banned by an automod? It's like some dystopian, Terminator type future where modbots use the most arbitrary reasons to ban someone. I revived an account that was idle for a long time and made two innocuous comments and was immediately banned because apparently if you have an inactive account and suddenly make several comments then that's very suspicious and grounds for a ban based on some silly algorithm. You can appeal the ban and eventually your appeal after numerous attempts will be heard by a human and then your account unbanned, that's if the bot decides to pass it on.

Love Reddit. Been chatting with some lovely people for years.

Reddit has its uses but have a conversation is not one of them. Anything against the prevailing view of the sub will just get downvoted and never seen. Boards is much better for actual conversation.

Just change your settings to "New" and down votes disappear your comments. It's set to "Best" as default I think.Upvoted comments will appear first.

I don't post much on boards or any part of the internet, I am more of a reader. Like others have said, Reddit only pops up on my Google search and it's a mess to read. Boards is a joy to read, format wise. I will be lurking around boards for as long as it's active.

    Answer to the question, YES

I used to post on boards back in the day, 10 + years ago. Then it got an update and I moved to Reddit. It’s weird because I don’t know anyone on Reddit like I used to on boards so it’s very different. I miss the old boards!!

I got tired of the AITA and AIO posts in my feed. Apart from them being overdone, most were AI as was half the other fora.

Got banned from a group for a single post making fun of the topic.

    I eventually deleted my account.

    Reddit is mostly this ****:

"A lady cut in front if me in the supermarket today, should i have said something?"

"I (F22) cooked my bf (M23) a meal today and said it was too salty, but its my favourite recipe, AITA?"

"Im an american but recently stumbled on irish music, is it offensive if i call myself an irish music fan? I am 15% irish btw"

Boards WAS better than Reddit but that boards is now a faded memory of something we are never getting back.

Boards always had it's faults but at it's peak it was probably the best all-round forum on the web, certainly there was nothing like it anywhere else in the anglosphere. One forum where you could reliably find informed people on virtually every aspect of Ireland past and present, a vast knowledge of niche topics as well as a decent place to talk nonsense, plenty of idiots and assholes too, but that is also part of Irish life.

I miss old boards and Reddit is no replacement, neither is 2026 boards.

Actually been using Reddit mostly the past couple of years. Its handy to get the latest news & just a better layout overall. However i find myself back here after seeing how discussions are being heavily censored with Ideologies & Politics been heavily pushed by both the mod team & bots where its topics only go one way. Which im going to try stick to here from now on and recommend friends the same.

I find it quite concerning considering it is the most popular online Irish social platform and there is definitely a feeling of indoctrination coming off it.

Don't want to ever see somewhere get censored, but that Ireland subreddit needs a good look at from government if its not them already peddling the ideologies there.

I don't care about either enough to form an opinion. Rarely use either.

They both kind of feel exactly the same.

Reddit is HUGE tho. I can't why people say its left or right wing. Its got cardinal directions its so huge.

There is USA reddit UK reddit .. its much bigger than boards. It has everything. Its so big .. its like air… really its nothing.

I use Reddit more now than boards. Bargain Alerts and keeps me here and mostly just reading a few other forums rather than posting (as) much. Apart from the odd bit of UK politics that's about it now. Arcade& Retro moved almost lock stock and barrel over to discord.

I understand the comment about being downvoted into oblivion on Reddit but that tends to only happen in the big subreddits. Reddit's smaller subs are usually fine, decent places for discussion, and anyway I'm not too worried about getting downvoted just for saying I don't like a particular TV programme or something.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

Here is the thing. Boards is VERY south Dublin. They give national and regional bargain alerts and regional news. SO its great for that.

In fact THAT Is it.. i couldnt put my finger on it. Boards just feels like south dublin… D4 or something.

Like in reddit there are people from the aran islands posting videos etc or from Menlo in galway or like NATIONALLY

Boards feels like its just the Dublin view of everything. Partic south Dublin. Its like people dont know the rest of Ireland exists.

I would say that is the REAL diff between Irish reddit and Boards.

Boards feels like its the south dublin worldwiew. The regional forums are dead. Reddit genuinely feels like its the entire country outside dublin.

Funny how quickly OP forgets the C Kirk thread where posters celebrated his killing, or the one where the insurance guy in NY was killed by Mangione

Boards and Reddit are as bad as each other for baying idiots and political hyenas.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 4,430 ✭✭✭mojesius

I have been coming back to Boards more recently, mainly as a lurker, as Reddit with the toxic US politics would get you down (and down a lot of rabbit holes).

Some of the Irish threads on Reddit are okay and even fun but the usual tribalism rears its ugly head quite often.

The two are miles ahead of X or tiktok which are giant shitheaps.

The most terrifying thing is that the big AI companies are training their LLM on reddit, imagine teaching a child to stab your neighbor before learning to cycling a bike. Nothing good will come of it
