Been down that road also and not simple, surgery is only cure. can get worse when doing a lot of of physical work and lifting. Can regrow after surgery and lessons learned to take it easy after surgery, common in young babies and adult me.

A cousin of mine is a surgeon in one of the large Dublin hospital

He was telling me when he worked in Sligo A&E a hill farmer came in with his balls so festered they were down to below his knees,he could hardly walk

A few months earlier he had caught them in barbed wire and never did anything about it

On the health theme woman are much better at checking themselves for lumps and abnormalities than men. Men should absolutely get into the habit of having a feel around. Probably leave the prostate to the professionals thou!

The second twin was born the same which is apparently very rare. I was pushed into the corner( not that I was any use anyway!) So all the med students could have a look. The chief didnt mind too much once everything was alright

Oh had full bloods done a year before he was diagnosed, didnt show up anything major

That's the reason I shared. It's private, embarrassing but important. Perhaps it might help some one else. I woke up one morning with a major change in me sack and assumed it would go away cos it wasn't sore. When it was staying, went to the the doc. I'd just moved to that gp and his first time seeing me he was kneeling in front of me while I'd the pants around the ankles and he poking and fondling my bits. Got referred for an urgent scan, or I could ring a place myself and pay. I did that. There my mind was put at ease as the scan showed my nuts, prostate, bladder, kidneys and associated bits were all in fine fettle but still needed a consultant to agree. That's what happened today.

had a scare in the same area when I was a young lad. Turned out to be a varicose vein and needed no follow up thankfully but was scary at the time

I heard a doctor on the radio a couple of years ago saying the very same. He suggested that men should have a good feel around at least once a week when in the shower as the warm water/atmosphere helps them hang a little better.

I got the same treatment one night on the pitch and the physio came in and said to me " all you can do is check if you still have 2 stones or is it a bag of chippings".

Had a phone call from an elderly neighbour yday evening saying she was after looking at some texts on her phone and saw one she hadn’t noticed about Entitlement lease reversion.

Shes not comfortable with tech…..was asking me what it’s about.

Am I correct in saying that anyone leasing entitlements gets a generic email like that every January,

Cheers for anyone’s thoughts so I can tell my neighbour so she can relax again.

It’s awkward for sure but compared to what the ladies have to go through to get checked it’s easy.
I had something in 2019 that turned out to be cysts so quite painful but harmless thank god.

Ya have to check lads. I remember a slogan from college in the late 80’s still.
    “Don’t actually die from embarrassment”

Yes, I got the same last year and again this year. It's probably relatively new, but just a notification of leased out entitlements returning.

About 10-15 years ago a lad I know was working away in America n one of his balls started swelling up, testicular cancer.

Went to a doctor over there, doctor asked him had he health insurance - no. Doctor said if he'd $250k they could do the operation tomorrow. If not he'd go on the public waiting list it'd be roughly 2 years, problem was he'd be dead in 6 months tops. Doctor twigged the accent n said try home.

Flew home n his family doctor here had organized him to be operated on the next day.No $250k either!.

He had 4 kids since so didn't affect him too much!

And we complain constantly about the Health Service here. My sister-in-law in California had a caesarean about 10 years ago. Luckily they had health insurance but the cost was phenomenal. It was like $100k or something.

over 40 once a year, over 50 at very least twice a year . I'm every 3 months at this stage but my gp tends to err on the side of caution.

I've recently got bloods done, turning 40 in a couple of months so will be doing it yearly from now on. Everything came back fine except he reckoned I had developed asthma. Asked if I had any issues recently and remembered a severe chest infection I had 6 months earlier. On an inhaler now and feel far better for it. Haven't smoked in over a year either. It went out the window shortly after the small lad was born.

    A true recent story.

Eldest in Aus recently broke two bones in his wrist.

I won't go into the details but the scenario was a pub, copious amounts of alcohol, a single girl and a punch to the head from a lad who thought he was with her. Anyway, eldest phoned me the next day - middle of the night here - told me the story saying he had a swollen wrist/arm that was very painful and a closed/black eye. I told him to go to the GP. The GP strapped his wrist and called a taxi (I think they call them uber over there) to the A&E. He was treated to the best of care, the surgical team pinned his wrist and he stayed overnight in a single room with a menu to choose from watching tennis on the TV. The physicians kept him over for a day so they could do a MRI on his head/eye socket to make sure he didn't suffer any eye or internal head injuries.

What did he pay - not a penny, and he doesn't have a health insurance policy - yet.

How did he break his wrist (presuming he was the one who was punched in the head)?

    Not your ornery onager

Just got a vhi letter in the post today nearly 16000 for oh for a long hospital stay last march. All covered. Mad money.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,888 ✭✭✭✭Reggie.

44 here this year and always get the bloods done at Christmas but from what @whelan2 said I might just get them done every 6 months. Catching something early is the key. Bloods are cheaper than a vet visit

When he got hit he put his right hand out when he was falling and broke the bones in his wrist.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 31,993 ✭✭✭✭whelan2

I think oh was very unfortunate nothing went right from when he was diagnosed. He had a rapid form of cancer. In a way , for him,he wouldn't want to be living the way he was for the last few months any longer. When you see other people struggling and in pain for years , it's an awful disease. The first thing he asked the consultant was will I be in pain, and he said no

    That was a lie

One doctor I was with on a minor issue few year ago said something along the lines of not to bother too much about bloods if under 40 and healthy. I had asked in my early 30s if I should get into a habit of routine checks and that was the answer.

Sounds wrong but maybe they were right.

In fairness the health system is probably under pressure with real sick people and and older people in 50s and 60s upwards getting routine blood work without healthy under 40s clogging the system more.
