You find what ironic exactly? You didn't listen to the representative from the NRA on CNN last night where he said the FBI/DHS/ICE/Attorney General's position that it was illegal to bring a gun to a protest was wrong? - That their position was wrong.

    It's a 24% drop from Canada alone.

Some towns along the boarder are trying campaigns to tempt Canadians to the states. It isn't working. This is what happens when you talk about a country as the 51st state.

That country really is something else, eh? Bizarre times we're living in.

I've looked at quite a few of the breakdowns - at least the ones that seem to be undoctored. My take is that the first shot was fired very shortly after the person in a grey jacket who took Pretti's gun stands up and moves away from him. If that person had fired the gun there would have been some reaction in his (the guy with Pretti's gun) body movement. I don't see any body movement at all - my best read is that the guy in a light khaki jacket behind the guy with Pretti's gun stands back from the scrum holding Pretti down and fires the first shot downward towards Pretti.

Pretti is obviously well disabled at this point. Although firing even one shot at Pretti is disgusting the number of shots fired suggests a complete disregard for the public in the vicinity and for the other agents involved.

Noticeable that Trump and Leavitt are very quickly backtracking. Alex Pretti was clearly an upstanding citizen and American patriot : any attempt to spin him as a 'domestic terrorist' was always doomed to failure.

People can lie down and be cowed by violent men but all that will get them is then to be walked on.

"When bad men combine, the good men must associate; else they will fall, one by one, an unpitied sacrifice in a contemptible struggle " Edmund Burke 1770.

Alex Petti was not protesting or impeding those thugs in any way. His only crime was being a decent human being and a nurse he went to the aid of a woman they had assaulted and was murdered for doing so.

Parts of states. You'll never be able to prove that America is 3rd world and as shown by the stats it remains a hugely popular destination for Irish who are first worlders.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,072 ✭✭✭Ozymandius2011

Yes it's good that they say that. But what's ironic is they supported the person whose officials are implementing the policies they say they disagree with. And also for decades they led people to think it was the Democrats "coming for your guns".

It may have a first world economy but if you look at any of the metrics that matter, healthcare education, literacy, child mortality, jail population, national debt, infrastructure, etc. the county is falls far short of most first world countries.

More Canadians visited the U.S. annually prior to last year than those from any other country.

Last year it was so popular with Canadians that those holidaying south of the U.S. border with Mexico were booking their flights on the proviso that their flights would not land on U.S. soil for any reason other than an emergency.

Yep, its a disaster for them.

As I said from the start, **** ups happen. 1 rogue untrained guy let's loose. Its a tragedy.

You'd normally expect authorities to try defuse the situation. 'We're investigating! Officer on leave. Please help us gather info, and we appeal for calm'.

Trumps admins approach, escalate!! Double down. He's a terrorist, out to kill! Armed at a riot! Our officer is the victim! He's been fired up by the radical Governor of that state. Its Insurrection, almost Civil War!!! How much further can we push this envelope.

Meanwhile everyone can see the videos, multiple angles, slowed down, enhanced etc. It's fairly clear he wasn't a radical terrorist out on a murder spree.

But there can be no retreat from Trump's team. They've already laid out their case. They've tried desperately to raise suspicions about Pretti, but he was such a good normal guy it falls flat.

No suddenly its Well of course we're investigating? Please give us time to gather info. The Governor is actually a nice guy. Can we just brush this under the carpet while we assess.

The fecking heads of the DHS, the FBI, DoJ and whatever the feck Miller is, were all happy to rush to conclusions, and try destroy Pretti's character and now suddenly its time for calm, and space and leave us alone to slink away

Your stats? The crowd sourced ones that had no actual data in them?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,343 ✭✭✭✭aloyisious

One thing that is evidenced and that is that Bovino and Noem tried to give a false narrative to the U.S. on what happened. Why they did so, apart from being simply thick, is not known yet but the result so far is that a lot of people took up what they said and believed it to be gospel according to the varied F/B posts backing their stated explanation about the shooting and how the victim was to blame for his death. The same blame will attach to Miller in the White House.

One thing Bovino and Noem did was foul up any proper investigation into the shooting from the start and it is not unreasonable to suspect that that was the reason they went on the attack from the start so as to divert blame from the DHS and the agencies the DHS put on the ground in Minneapolis. That interference may well turnout to be a criminal offence, even higher on the chart of offences federally and state than standing on a street using a whistle and a camera to record the actions of the DHS agents. Its no wonder that Bovino is being got out of town fast. The powers that be don't want him within hands reach of any police investigation team appointed to find out and determine who is culpable for the shooting of Alex.

They don't want tyranny against them . The other side? F_ck it….

Overall tourism numbers declined in both the US and Ireland last year by about 6%. After we both rapidly turning into 3rd world countries. You know full well America as a nation is first world and it has been since Europeans first setup shop there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,254 ✭✭✭RoyalCelt

Crowd sourcing is a form of data. You'll never put together a formidable argument that the USA is a 3rd world country. You're welcome to try.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,639 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

They got away with all this with Renee Good but it was never going to wash a second time. Alex was an ICU nurse at a veterans' hospital, posed zero threat to the ICE agents on Saturday morning and yet was shot 10 times in the back. No amount of spin or gaslighting was going to make this look like a justifiable killing.

The economy is going to get Trump before any blowback to ICE, Greenland, Epstein or any other distraction he can throw up.

FDI is falling massively. 12% came from Canada, thats almost wiped out, 45% from Europe, thats reduced by 50% and others are following a similar trend. No one is investing, most are removing money from Treasuries and pension funds. The Fed plans to print $50bn per month until the middle of 2026 just to buy Treasury bills. That decision was made before the latest exodus. Its more likely to run to mid 2027. Inflation will rise as the dollar falls. Cost of living will become unmanageable as will debt. Mortgages and loans will start to default.

There will be catastrophic job losses and huge downgrades of people's 401ks.

This will be the biggest story of 2026 and will probably collapse the Trump administration.

The depressing thing is Bovino will be moved on to act the maggot elsewhere. He should be put on leave.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,254 ✭✭✭RoyalCelt

I've a few friends who would either not vote or vote republican and they're reasonably happy about things in America but are not happy about their military helping others oversees. They think they should be pulled back.

My family there would be like yours. Some already left and the rest saying they'll eventually leave. They're hardcore democrats and less hardcore activists.

You're anecdotes would lead to believe the 6% drop in tourism to the US would partly come down to them implementing much stricter measures on entry. I was thinking this could be the case already. The number's travelling to this world cup will be off the charts. That's if the Americans let them in. They'll suspect a lot will use this world cup as a way to enter and remain in let's be honest is one of the most in demand nations for immigrants on the planet. Imagine the numbers who'd travel if they completely opened their border.

You really don't have it in you to criticize America at all, do you?

And from now on, you won't engage because I dared criticize America by calling it "the nicest third world country" in the world.

At least in Ireland, you won't be shot dead by ICE, or held up at gunpoint, and if you were, we have a good healthcare system to cover us.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,759 ✭✭✭✭Frank Bullitt

Crowd sourcing data is easily corrupted, and it doesn't rely on scientific data models to gain actual insights. You are doubling down now that you were caught out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,979 ✭✭✭✭briany

You'd think the bragging about sexual assault, the siding with white nationalists, the belittling of veterans, the making fun of handicapped people, the catastrophic mishandling of a pandemic, the attempt to sic his followers on the US Capitol, the rape judgement, the arrest, and the creation of a neo-fascist goon squad would do for him before then, wouldn't you?

If Americans cared about their economy, they wouldn't have voted Trump back in or come dangerously close to reelecting him in 2020.

Anyway, MAGA will just say it's the Democrat's fault somehow, and the rest of the public will go vote in those free and fair elections that are definitely going to be held…

In fairness, you'd struggle to find any country where your friendly land neighbour drops tourism by 25%+. We're only a year into this. Do you think civilian murders by authorities are making the US a more or less enticing holiday destination? Threatening Europe on a weekly basis will surely make it an enticing destination too.

Btw, I've had many opportunities where I could have worked for my company in the US. Ten years ago I would have contemplated it. But now, not a chance. The fact that a rapist being president is only the tip of the iceberg, that's absolutely terrifying. You keep going on about immigrants being the problem but the white house is filled with degenerates, ICE appears to contain lots of gun happy proud boys and you don't seem to mind.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,254 ✭✭✭RoyalCelt

I admitted I was wrong on the crime but this is a valid source. I didn't make the initial 3rd world claim. The burden of proof isn't on me but I suspect I won't be seeing any science that suggests the USA isn't a 3rd world country. Like I said welcome to try but I'm sitting comfortable here knowing it isn't and it won't be proven.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,254 ✭✭✭RoyalCelt

Why would I criticise US tourism numbers when they're down the same as ours in a conversation suggesting it's not a desirable location for people to go anymore. The barometer to visit America is far higher then Ireland too m. All about context.

The US may not be a 3rd world country, but its 1 of the worst 1st world countries that exist based on the following statistics.

Key statistics where the USA ranks poorly:

    • Health Outcomes:
      • Life Expectancy: Ranks 34th among high-income countries, with lower life expectancy than peers.
      • Maternal Mortality: Among the highest in developed nations.
      • Obesity: Extremely high rates compared to other countries.
      • Mental Health/Addiction: Highest rates of mental illness and drug addictions, particularly with the opioid pandemic.
    • Safety and Justice:
      • Gun Violence: 27th highest firearm homicide rate globally, far exceeding other wealthy nations.
      • Police Killings: Significantly higher rates compared to nations like Germany or the UK.
      • Incarceration: One of the highest incarceration rates in the world.
    • Social and Economic Inequality:
      • Poverty: Higher, more extreme poverty rates (17.8%) compared to a 10.7% average in 25 other developed nations.
      • Wealth Gap: 4th largest wealth gap in the world.
      • Healthcare Access: 62% of personal bankruptcies are caused by medical bills.
    • Quality of Life and Infrastructure:
      • Work-Life Balance: Ranked 26th out of 36 OECD countries.
      • Broadband Access: Ranked 15th in the world for broadband penetration.
      • Voter Turnout: Ranked 120th out of 169 countries.
      • Childcare/Education: Limited access to affordable childcare and high education debt.

There are multiple problems in America. Pointing out one issue but not the other doesn't make the other a non issue. We've an immigration problem in Ireland too. We've all seen the polls.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,254 ✭✭✭RoyalCelt

You basically just said it's a first world country and proved it with facts. Thank you for making my point.

I never said it was the best first world country I just argued (badly at times) against the hyperbole that it's a 3rd world country.

Trump's base isn't that sane. They would accept that kind of brutality, or even cheer it on.

I accept the argument, but I just don't believe that these recent ICE recruits have the balls to stand their ground if (when?) faced with a serious paramilitary threat.

I'm sure they've all had great fun in a paint-ball battle, they're probably all high-scorers in First-Person video games, but just looking at their behaviour and reactions in these recent incidents has me convinced that they would all wet their pants as soon as they saw one of their comrades get his legs blown off in front of them, and they'd all be calling in sick when the second one took a bullet to the head.

The MAGA base is all mouth, but if (when?) they find out their Glorious Leader can't protect them from righteous vigilantes, they'll stay at home and cry into their Mountain Dew.

I'd still say it'd be far more politically effective, though, for one or more of the "Blue" states to announce their secession, and blame it squarely on Trump. The Insurrection Act would be irrelevant if such a state declared itself to be no longer bound by US federal laws. Plenty of historical precedent for such a move since their antique Constitution was first drafted.
