IIs There something like 1100 questions on the audit?

The concept of Bord Bia was sound.

It was supposed to promote out beef abroad while working with farmers to raise quality standards.

    In reality it does neither.

The 20c QA 'bonus' is a rod used by the factories to get cattle when they want them. Feedlots finish over a third of cattle now and they all get at least 20c more than the farmer abiding by BB rules. This week I can get 7.00 + 20c 'QA' for U30 month R grade cattle with perfect fat score and 3 or less movements. A feedlot will get 7.30+ for O- overage lads after 5 movements - but no QA paid to them lads because the system is fair 🤡

Is it worth milk suppliers putting pressure on council and board members of the different co ops? If the co ops said they have no faith in bord bia or threaten to withdraw would bord bia listen then ?

The milk and beef processors love Bord Bia. It costs them nothing and gives them loads of good PR material.

Milk processor has to pay for each audit of their suppliers I thought ?

    What constitutes a feed lot?

    How many cattle?

Or is it a certain type of factory contract you have to agree to??

Absolutely best route right now..They mightn't come out publicly but they'll sure as hell put the call into the Minister that he'll have to ask the offender to step aside.

Only farm organization representing farmers in mainstream media the last few years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,636 ✭✭✭epfff

Its nothing to do with numbers.

It granted by dept of ag and carries different levels of disease mainly tb control such as double fencing or year round housing, tb testing twice yearly, and lots of keeping wildlife out of shared water and the like.

Its just associated with numbers because it suits farms with numbers to have measures in place and means they can purchase from restricted herds and never blocked from buying because of tb status.

From a consumer point of view, I always liked the Bord Bia idea, promoting and championing Irish food and produce, and I have used their recipes. It feels very tarnished now. I am left with the image of a 1970s whisky nosed politician rubbing his hands together and laughing at “those ejits” buying Irish produce while importing non Irish substitutes for his own profit.

From a professional point of view, I worked for a few big names in retail and it was always important to include the Bord Bia logo, whether the Irish one or the NI one. There was a certain prestige and trust attached to the marketing. I feel that has been diluted now. The stamp of quality is not what it was.

If Bord Bia wants to regain that trust and be taken seriously, Larry Murrin has to go. Why the fook should I buy Irish when the likes of him and his position don't bother.

Well said and I reckon there are a lot of others on here that agree with you.

The issue is that if murrin is forced to step aside it will heap a serious amount of pressure on the processors to stop tangling in product from outside the country.

The farm org actually hold a serious trip card here. Excellent move by refusing to be in the room next week. Pound on the pressure and have farmers shouting no faith in QA. If the processors can't get their hands on QA raw product the house of cards comes down. Heydon can't be seen to let this happen. I would say the farm orgs just have to put the threat of asking their members not to engage in the QA process while murrin is still chair. Collective disobedience similar to the TV licence and water charges

My money is that by this day next week Murrin will not be in the chair

    His position is untenable.

Leaving bord via is not an option for an individual. Milk and beef farmers are locked in financially.

So what are the options apart from giving the poor auditors trying to earn a crust (most of these part time farmers aswell and probably sickened they are working for them…..also locked in as an individual financially).

I would add to it that it will be Murrin that will have to walk as Heydons comment backing him has essentially taken the "power of remove him" away.

All auditors should be asked to meet farmers at their imaginary Brazilian yard and ask for official communication refusing to creating admin backlog and highlighting the inequality at different levels before agreeing to meet at actual yard in Republic.

They pay levies to Bord Bia and they pay for participation in marketing campaigns.

Plus 1. I know of over age month cattle going into Dawn this week at lot more than 'ordinary' farmer is getting quoted. Murrin is one serious bluffler thats being caught with his trousers down. What an absolute insult to quality assured farmers.

Hope the rest of the barons are now exposed.

I stand corrected. Let me rephrase - It costs them little or nothing compared to what it costs farmers.

it should be as clear as ‘the nose on your face’ that Murrin should go. Once he/his company is importing/ using Brazilian produced meat - or/and meat from any other ‘similar’ country than that’s it irrespective of how little the quantity is.

    SOME POINTS on the issue

    (1) what if the issue makes headlines - gets blown up out of all proportions- in the Brazilian Press or in the press in other countries that we complete with

    (2) Murrin is NOT IRREPLACABLE.

    (3) He/his position is a non issue when compared to the potential damage that what he has done can be caused to our local and INTERNATIONAL reputation

    (4) Just in case the issue gets legs , then before it has a chance to do so Board Bia should DOUBLE DOWN on the whole sector that it has jurisdiction over and check that no one else is at the same ‘crack’. It should not wait until there is another such report.

    (5) The whole horse meat saga gives us clear indication of what BB should now do so as to be seen as being pro active in the area

Is that possibly more damning. Did it go there as Irish Beef? It certainly went there as being supplied by an Irish beef processor.

Very true. And is it ok to put English people's lives at risk with God knows what?

This thing is spiraling out of control. Our biggest and most valuable export market.

Question for ffg what corporate donations have ye both received from the Dawn Group of companies.......?

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators, Paid Member Posts: 4,975 Mod ✭✭✭✭Siamsa Sessions

Queallys own Dawn as far as I know. They were traditionally FG but being pragmatic businessmen I assume they’re well-known in FF circles too.

I see the IFA are at the offices of Bord Bia since 6am this morning looking for Murrin to step down and a few changes to how it is governed. Fair play to them and it is something I would support them on.

Probably no bad thing to get the blood flowing and loosen lads out for future fights.

But getting Murrin's head is not going to change much, especially if the Minister appoints another "sound man" instead of him. Changing how Bord Bia operates would be much more useful to farmers. If the audit was given a farmer-friendly focus as a result of this, then that'd be a great outcome for us.
