Has he given out any negative review yet for a movie like even 2 out of 5 ?

How many reinventions since his departure from RTE has he launched?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,457 ✭✭✭GSF

is he still getting invited to the free press preview screenings so that’s why he’s majoring. In on them?

"It's seems that he's presenting a movie review show now. Not sure that this is the way to go for him."

Why not, he's been reviewing books for ages and film is just another creative form?

He must be cracking up trying to find a way to gain traction.

Is his youtube series which was splurted out a few weeks now a non event?

disappointed that he hadn’t revealed this weeks near death celebrity! Could become a weekly feature.

I just found it too much. He spent most of his speaking time talking about movies and tv series. The only respite from it was an interview with a young designer. I agree that he's very knowledgeable about film and literature, but I found it overdone. He's obviously a talented broadcaster but it seems like he needs a good producer.

    Film reviews, that'll catch on.

Its not like no-one has thought of this before.

It's the first time that the most trusted man in Ireland has reviewed movies though.

Films that get a positive review will be box office blockbusters as the population of Ireland flock to the cinema to watch his recommendations.

Ok, a recap check list of post RTE projects

    • First up was the home podcast studio, pics were furnished, but after a few weeks static
    • Then there was the youtube interview series that aside from Andrea Corr never reached over 1000 views per episode
    • Then the move to London
    • After that ended it was supposedly a few projects involving obituaries and sports punditry
    • Now film reviews

    Anything I'm missing?

He would have spoken a lot about films and TV shows on his rte1 9am show.

Of course anything involving an Irish actor was always "absolutely amazing" so I took his advice with a large pinch of salt.

This one got a lot more than that

Does he still have a sponsor for the podcast? Ballymore sponsored the last series but doesn't look like it currently has a sponsor.

I find it fascinating. Do you remember when Pat Kenny was trying to block the public from finding out how much our license fee went his way?

He admitted a few weeks ago that he falls asleep in the cinema. I wonder does he bring the missus with him to give him a few pokes.

Well I should have got the popcorn out.

On the one hand Tubs should not be admonished for not speaking out about his wages when they were published. We should not expect him to be a whistleblower.

On the other hand he exited from the company because it was he who revealed (even if just tangentially, and also not at all) his bosses miss doings. And for this he should be forgiven.

I am all for moving past the problems surrounding Tubs exit and wishing him well, but I feel this is a bit of a re-writing of history.

    ______

In the end they were just greedy, they all knew one another and knew what to expect more money for no return, it was a secure cash flow, but in fairness they looked for what they wanted and fair dues to them for that, and wouldn't you be doing the same!

Just one more thing .... when did they return that car

"I am all for moving past the problems surrounding Tubs exit and wishing him well, but I feel this is a bit of a re-writing of history."

Tubridy's exit was precipitated by a statement he issued following the GT report into the RTE payments scandal.

"Mr Tubridy had issued a statement welcoming a report by Grant Thornton showing he had no role in the understatement of his earnings from 2017 to 2019. The report exonerated Mr Tubridy from any involvement in that aspect of the scandal and put the blame firming on RTÉ management.

But RTÉ sought clarification about a line in the statement that read: “It is also clear that my actual income from RTÉ in 2020 and 2021 matches what was originally published as my earnings for those years, and RTÉ has not yet published its top-10 earner details for 2022.”"

As I say you can't turn around and say that Tubs helped to uncover any of the governance issues at RTÉ, he also cannot be praised for failing to tell RTÉ "if the published figures are published then the figures are incorrect".

It's highly likely that had RTÉ not seen a change in the chair of the board or CFO that many of the issues at RTÉ would not have been uncovered. I suspect that Tubs would still be on the Radio today had these governance issues not been highlighted, and he be largely safe.

D4bes would be making a key note speech at the 100 years celebration in UCC, as a proud Cork woman, and Jimbo would still be on KB4's Executive Team.

I respect that Tubs did turn up at the Oireachtas (unlike Dee Forbes and Jim Jennings) and the findings of the GT report.

However, it does not take from the fact that RTÉ were running around

    1. Trying to keep people they didn't need
    2. Trying to make the payments to those people look less excessive than that really where

Both Tubs and Noel could have said at many stages

    1. The figures your about to publish are incorrect
    2. This deal with Renault is to convoluted for us

    ______

In the end they were just greedy, they all knew one another and knew what to expect more money for no return, it was a secure cash flow, but in fairness they looked for what they wanted and fair dues to them for that, and wouldn't you be doing the same!

An awful piece of (non) proof reading at the Indo.

Unless he can carve out something truly distinctive on YouTube, he’s going to struggle to make an impact. The problem is that he’s arriving very late to the YouTube and podcast game. There’s already a myriad of established channels covering much the same territory, and many of them operate on a far larger, even international, scale.

I hope he never comes back to RTE, but would have no problem with him going to a commercial station. I think that's where his broadcasting future lies. He's not a new media sort of guy anyway.

Hes in his 50s, YT isnt the place for him.

It isn't his age that's against him, it's his style of broadcasting.

Just listened to a few minutes of his Bookshelf Live from a week ago - was he pissed or did he always sound like that (haven't listened to him since he left). Slurring, stuttering, barely distinguishable words, and a bit flushed in the face

Whatever, a terrible thing to be listening to

He has two producers on his podcast(think that one of them is Aidan Power) and has lost his sponsor. With the viewership figures on YouTube, I'd imagine that it's running at a loss at the moment. Getting a thousand plus views would deliver very little income. He really needs to get a new sponsor.

what’s in it for a sponsor though? The viewing figures are pitiful so your branding will get no views

He's obviously not getting a carryover from his old audience onto YouTube. He was mainly targeting an older female audience with book reviews and celebrity gossip. YouTube has a younger audience so would he not be better off targeting this age group? He's recognised by young people for the Toy Show and being funny. Why not review toys on YouTube. Show himself unboxing and using new toys.
