It's somewhat irrelevant, that's the reality. Within two weeks, authorities have effectively executed civilians. In both cases the administration have labeled the victims as terrorists. That kind of propaganda and justification of the executions is what happens in an a totalitarian state.

That's ignoring the fact that plenty of the deportations have been illegal and many of the deportees have turned out to be illegally deported. On top of that, the ones deported to the likes of El Salvador have been subjected to what amounts to torture.

So saying "ya but..." is a simple way of downplaying what amount to state sanctioned torture, executions etc. I'm sure back in the 30s, people made similar excuses to justify and downplay the Gestapo and Brown shirts. Similarly people do similar for Orban's Hungary and I recall downplaying as Russia started to move in the direction of totalitarianism over the last 20 years.

I'm guessing the likes of Minneapolis are on the verge of significant civil unrest and the administration is responsible for that.

Also just to add, ICE appear to have murdered another person in a Texas facility. We have absolutely no idea of the extent of what's happening in El Salvador... The Texas facility is on its third death since opening.

Just watched thos video of ICE murdering that fella yesterday, anyone supporting ICE actions can you please explain what threat he was posing that deserved him to be shot multiple times after he was clearly disarmed.

that’s some election manifesto. “We will stop ‘illegals’ coming in but will murder a few innocent citizens in the process”

The argument is now moving on to 'how to avoid being murdered by the gestapo'?

Its every man for himself? If the gestapo ask you to hand over the child you're protecting so they can be sent to a camp, if you refuse and get shot, sock rocker will blame you for not complying

Jack , the situation is ‘a bit more nuanced ‘ than you are making it out to be . Suggesting that they should stay at home in their nice warm bed is ‘ a somewhat naieve’ to put it kindly

Trump wants to create havoc and he was almost guaranteed to achieve his objective by the ‘instructions and equipment’ he is giving to ICE and all bolted down by the daily comments he and others make through the media. Communities of course going to come out and show their ‘displeasure’ at ICE’s methods , who it arrests, no warrants produced, etc, etc, and this is exactly what Trump was hoping for because it gives ICE the fodder/ grounds to find reasons to ESCELATE.

Why not research your own argument instead of asking to be spoonfed?

more victim blaming. Honest mistake guv, excuses, diversion and lies.

Why are you so soft on crime ?

Following on from 46724 if The above situation did not work for Trump , ie to create havoc, he would have found some other way to create it. So , some US communities have decided to stop the strategy in it’s tracks.

I rate the UKranians, and especially V. Zelensky , very brave and very courageous in what they are doing.

And I would rate the communities demonstrating against ICE in the same way

I got a real vibe that murder is fine when ICE and certain individuals do it from that post.

    I admire your optimism.

Absolutely nothing will change re 2nd amendment.

The NRA will tut tut, and there will be another murder by ICE shortly to move matters along.

Whenever there are conflicting parts of MAGA, invariably they settle down so that Trump can continue his fascist March to victory.

Remember when we were told a Biden second term would mean disaster for America? Boy, did we have a lucky escape!!

According to some, his mere presence on the public streets was reason enough

Staying at home would not work because ICE/ Trump will find some way to create the level of HAVOC required. What would you do Jack if ICE knocked on your door and you had to get out of your warm bed to answer it. And on that they look for ‘illegals ‘ in the house and on finding none wrestle you to the ground and then physically ‘pump ‘ you for information and maybe, for good measure, take a family member down to the station to question him/her and they come back with a few bruises/ scratches that they apparently acquired while walking home ?

So Jack, if that was your experience what

    (1) would you do / how would you react?

    (2) And how do you think your neighbours /community react if they found out what happened to you ?

    (3) Or would you sweep it under the carpet and tell nobody so as not to potentially escalate the situation?

If there were gangs of heavily armed illegals roaming the streets shooting people at will I would expect a targetted, specifically resourced, law enforcement operation to apprehend them and bring them to trial as soon as possible, not grant the gang members presumptive immunity before the fact and make up excuses for them after they kill people.

Yes, these are probably the very people that would have been out on the streets protesting if they were living in Iran . It belies the real reason why Trump was supporting the protesters. He was using the protesters to get at the regime so as to topple it and therefore improves his chances of getting at their proverbial REAR EARTHS !

    A few comments:

The execution of Alex Pretti is the most disgusting, and disturbing thing I have seen in the US for a long time, and that's saying something. I was an early fan of AOC, then I saw her on a few occasions where she was clearly out of her depth and sounding like a student union politician, but her comments on Noem's remarks were right on the mark: people need to believe themselves. Unfortunately as I discovered when I lived in the US, and it seems to have got a lot worse in the last 22 years, a significant proportion of the population want to outsource their thinking - either to religious or political leaders.

I'm very literal so I don't see @Jack Daw's posts as victim blaming, while understanding why others do. They do raise the important question though, how can the conduct of federal agencies be protested without risking further loss of life? As I understand it, Pretti wasn't actually taking part in a protest, he was just being a good citizen in directing traffic around some agents, and then he went to help a woman who had been pepper sprayed. I've done similar things myself in the past, including preventing police from following protesters onto my property, though I wasn't risking being shot dead at any time.

It's sad but true that it's best to avoid any close interaction with armed thugs in the current environment - I say that while acknowledging that a strong, organised and widespread protest against the conduct of the Trump regime is essential.

Surely at this stage, any officer or military who assainates Trump should have the same immunity as ICE. They have been sworn to defend America from enemies both foreign and domestic. The US has never faced a bigger threat than this administration. They should all be legitimate targets.

“outsource their thinking” is excellent shorthand for what is happening.

The protestors would be best off joining ICE to get that juicy carte blanche immunity to kill anyone on sight and then mkae up anything to justify it afterwards. ICE vs. ICE zero consequences for all.

That South Park episode made Noem look decent compared to real life.

She said he committed an act of domestic terrorism.

I can see this escalating rapidly.

It literally is every man for himself, yes. No amount of blame or right vs. wrong matters to the person who gets shot. The only thing that matters is your own one life.

I have no doubt that if you found out a loved one was going to an ICE protest with a concealed gun, you would plead with them to not take it. So spare me the lectures. Every single person here would say to not take the gun.

I am not blaming the guy for his own death. I am saying he should have been more responsible for his own safety and left his gun at home. People are protesting ICE because of their behaviour so it is obviously a bad idea to risk your life on them behaving well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,749 ✭✭✭Cody montana

you are most certainly blaming him for his own death.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,375 ✭✭✭✭ancapailldorcha

Wrong. If someone is protesting then they care a great deal about right and wrong. Doubly so if they feel the need to carry a firearm as per their rights as US citizens.

You can claim not to be victim blaming all you want but that's all your last paragraph is.

It's so depressing and tedious that the usual posters are defending ICE here. If a refugee or a member of the Black Panthers did this, I imagine the narrative would be very different.

I blame the ICE agent for murdering the guy. But I also think you can reduce your chances of being murdered by ICE by not having a concealed gun. This guy has been protesting for years according to his family. He should know that bringing weapons is a bad idea.

Seventeen pages of everyone agreeing that the ICE agent murdered the guy won't stop the next protester from needlessly taking a gun to a protest and putting themselves at more risk of being murdered.

We are actually responsible for how much risk we put ourselves in. It's why we avoid alleys, or cross the street, or walk away from someone, or warn loved ones to be careful. It is not victim blaming to point out that someone put themselves at an increased level of risk by their actions.
