Im sorry but thats not true especially for the time frame when console exclusives really meant anything, ps3/ 4 and xbox one era MS were churning out console exclusives that werent broke on release, now thats not to say they were for everyone either but they were solid games

There is probably a tonne more but thought of these from the top of my head that anyone who enjoys games should have played

    Forza series

    Gears of War series

    Alan Wake/ American Nightmare

    Quantum break

    Sunset overdrive

    Crackdown 1 and 2

    Fable 1 and 2

    Ryse son of rome

    Titanfall

One of the reasons I stick to console is just the comfort of gaming on the couch with the big TV. I did spend a bit of money upgrading PC over the years, but especially with working from home, I don't want to stay sitting at the desk playing there.

Was really looking forward to the Steam Machine for that reason. Have started building up a bit of a Steam library with the Steamdeck, so the option of switching between Deck, PC and Steam Machine sounded terrific. But between what people were guessing the SM might cost and how prices have even risen since then, I'm veering further and further away from getting one.

And given the price of the PS5 Pro (which I only really bought because I was trading in both my PS5 and the Switch I barely played), I do dread to think what the PS6 could end up being.

I'll still probably get one because I'm an absolute dickhead, but still could be an insane price.

Probably should have clarified they dropped the ball this and some of last gen. I had a 360 that was used more than the PS3 (initially) but that was mainly due to MS nailing online for that gen. And yes, they has loads of good exclusives back then. But for the last couple of gens, this one in particular, they've been pretty terrible.

I had an SX but sold it last year. A lot of their first party console exclusives were broken or unfinished at launch. Whereas Sony ones, while few and far between this gen, are near technically perfect on release. Whether you like the games or not, you can't really fault the technical mastery on display by SSM, Insomniac and Sucker Punch. Their games, while not for everyone, are perfect examples of exclusivity showing near technical perfection.

Just my opinion mind. Aside from Forza Horizon 4.5 5, most of MS's first party "big" games needed fixes day 1. I do wish they did better, competition is great. And with pc components going out of control lately, consoles, while more expensive than traditionally, will be more sought after in the near future. Steam Machine has a potential door for non-pc players, but the price will determine its success imo.

The Sony engineers really are incredible at making good looking games. I've a PC that makes a mockery of the PS5 and yet the most technically impressive games are the Sony developed ones. Just great tech matched with great art, well not Horizon, that game is ugly and messy to me but is a tech showpiece. They've a few hiccups, god of war was a disaster on amd hardware. Even their games that target PS4 are still some of the best looking games you can buy. I think it was dealing with how awful the PS3 was that made them so good. A lot of visual techniques were created by Sony engineers to get around the flaws of that system.

This is an interesting post from the director of performance and motion capture on the new life is strange game. He talks about how he poured everything into it until the 5pm on the day he was let go. Have to wonder how much of it was finished when they firings at deck nine happened or did they do it as soon as the game was mostly done with those devs no longer needed. Still, **** to be working on something and made redundant before the thing even comes out.

    I watched it tonight.

Its very bad, almost left half way through but stayed to see if it improved. Got worse every scene.

    Its very very bad.

Took alot of good stuff from silent hill 2 and ruined it.

Downloaded Dark Souls 2 to steamdeck to check if I could switch between playing on both PC and Steamdeck or would the mods I installed (graphical upgrades only) affect things.

Turns out DS2 doesn't even support Steam Cloud saves, so wouldn't be able to switch between them anyway without somehow manually copying and transferring save files.

First time I encountered this with the Steamdeck. Didn't even know it was a thing.

Anyone trying Highguard tomorrow out of sheer curiosity?

Played through TR-49 over the last few days. Inkle's (80 Days, A Highland Song, Overboard! etc) take on the detective / 'information game' genre. Your purpose starts fairly vague - you're plopped in front of a strange computer that has a catalogue of books and told to start searching. First, you need to get used to the four-letter filing system (see: the game's title) so you can actually figure out how to find things. As you start searching a narrative begins to emerge through the books you discovered (don't worry - you only get a short sample paragraph from each) and, more substantially, the notes the database creators / curators have left about each of them. Each entry contains links - some overt, some a bit more hidden - that lead you to new entries.

I'll vague-post about the story as that's ultimately the juice here, but suffice to say it's a tricky, interesting thing with a lot more going on that meets the eye. Just the right balance between what you're told and what you have to intuit. It probably is a bit more involved than some similiar games, but if you've played the likes of Immortality you'll have a sense of how the story comes together in a non-linear way and between the lines of what's on screen.

Anyway, a really nice compact experience - took me 4-5 hours to see it through - and another excellent game from Inkle.

Kinda worrying it's out tomorrow and can't be found on the PS Store. If there was a solo element to it, I might have, but zero interest in small team based PvP, free or not. Would be nice to see a new IP do well, but it seems to be written off based on a single trailer. Whatever they have planned for today better be good.

Think it launches at 6pm our time.

Strange you can't preload it alright.

There was a creator preview event over the weekend apparently. Geoff Keighley is also gloating a bit on twitter about all the grief he got for it being last reveal at TGAs.

Ill give it 2 hours later hopefully.

Intruiging enough post to make me add this to my steam basket.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 499 ✭✭MikeRyan87

    Played 3 matches of Highguard.

Enjoyable enough but dont think ill go back anytime soon.

3 v 3 seems like way too little for the size of the maps. Long distances to travel even on your mount after dying.

    Suppose they could add 4 v 4 or 5 v 5 eventually.

Dont see it surviving long term unless the updates are great.

Overwhemingly negative reviews on Steam so far, don't think it'll last the month, tbh.

While I’ve zero interest in another live service shooter, and this one does sound fairly bland (so was always going to struggle), I feel just a twang of sympathy for the developers here. The severe backlash seems to mostly lie as a result of the game being a meme object due to Keighley’s bizarre placement of the game in his ad showcase. It didn’t stand a chance as soon as that happened.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 37,419 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Seemingly they weren't even planning on doing any trailers for it. It was meant to be a complete shadowdrop until Keighley offered them that trailer spot after seeing the game.

It does seem to have created unrealistic expectations for the game and that it was actually going to be some huge AAA-style shooter. Most of the negative reviews on Steam centre around some performance issues which players would probably have been more forgiving of if this was kept as more of a low-key release without that type of hype.

It didn’t help that they don’t seem to have adapted the marketing strategy to account for the trailer, instead going radio silence for a month.

Again, any live service game that isn’t a total knockout is probably doomed these days regardless. Still, it does seem the ‘overwhelmingly negative’ immediate response is at least partially divorced from the game itself.

To be honest the best part about Highguard so far is that they invited a bunch of streamers and critics to check out the game before launch. Dr.Disrespect posted an image of his credentials from the event and said he was there…. except other streamers/critics said they never saw him there, his credentials weren't official and looked photoshopped/AI, and then marketing team for the devs themselves came out and said he wasn't at any of their events.

Looks like the devs are blaming the reveal trailer instead of looking at their game...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,479 ✭✭✭Cordell

They never blame their game. It's always something else, it's the gamers, the haters, the reviewers, the time of year, the color of the sky and so on. They will never admit they made a mediocre game no one wants to play.

And in this case, I'll be honest: I want all these free to play but pay to win or microtransactions riddled games to fail. They are a waste of talent and resources and driven by a slimy business model.

Front Mission 3 remake heading to console at the end of January. One of my all time favourite games on PS1 and a pretty breezy tactical RPG to play.

The remake got a lot of negativity when it released on PC with dodgy upscaling and awful translation but apparently those have been fixed on PC and it's a much different game. They did the same with Front Mission 2 and fixed the issues.

It's a pity TGA wasn't around back then, Geoff would have been clear winner for his performance here.

Metro gamecentral has a positive write up about Highguard.

Sat down to go back to finish games I already started.

Started up Nioh because I'm a slag and a souls-like pervert.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 37,419 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Always been interested by the look of the Nioh games, just never pulled the trigger on them.

Speaking of souls-like perverts, making a good bit of progress at Dark Souls 2 after a slow start. Completed No Mans Wharf last night which is an area that really highlights the main issues with DS2 so far; mob squads, ambushes, enemies crashing through walls, enemies climbing up from ledges, enemies falling down from ledges, enemies shooting arrows at you from ledges, can't f*cking see the ledges because don't want to sacrifice the shield for the torch.

Still made it through mostly without incident as I'm just expecting the ambushes at every corner/door, but man, it can be relentless, and healing is… so……. slooooowwwww……

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 54,671 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Nioh is great if you want to play a souls-like featuring an Irish Samurai who surprisingly has an accurate accent and features a bit of the aul Gaeilge as well.

To Note about Dark Souls 2, you are playing the Scholar of the first Sin version which has been rebalanced to be fairer. It's still a nightmare. Thank God it has that mechanic that enemies stay dead after a certain amount of kills.

That's something which caught me really off guard. Was battling through one early area, the Heide Tower (which I then found out isn't the best option for first area and you should do Forest of the Giants first). Kept getting killed by some of the large stone knights there, and all of a sudden some of them seemed to be randomly missing.

Only downside to that is it reduces farming, as I was levelling up quite quickly even with the ones I was able to kill.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 54,671 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

You can use the ascetics to bring them back but I think it raises the difficulty level as well.

Lots of people complained about how it could affect farming but it's nonsense, especially with how level scaling works in dark souls.

Hey everyone with a PlayStation and Playstation plus!

You've no excuses not to play it now.

They've really offered a lot quality in the last year with the monthly games.

    Nearly always something worthwhile.
