Sure perhaps on a given day you might prefer him to start a game over Kerkez but if you are saying you would rather Kerkez move to tottenham this window instead and we kept Robbo you are delusional. I absolutely love Robbo as much as the next Liverpool fan but if 1 left back has to go this window the obvious choice is Robbo, to think anything else is crazy!

And you know that's what we are talking about right? Not just who we want to start on Saturday…

    A

Agreed. However let's be honest, he doesn't need regular football to start for Scotland in the world cup this summer.

And Djimi Traore was part of the back 4 that won a champion's league…so what's your point exactly?

We all know Robbo is a bonified living legend at pool but all this talk of keeping him over Kerkez is absolute nonsense of the highest order. Robbo was easily the weakest link in our league winning team last year, you know it and I know it so what's the argument here exactly?

Absolutely I'd love to keep Robbo as our back up left back but that's it. If he is not happy with that then fair enough and we say thanks for the memories and good luck to you sir. End of discussion.

Kerkez is literally a decade younger than Robbo and a few years younger than Robbo was when he arrived here and will grow into the position.

Just because Robbo has played well when called upon this year doesn't mean he is still capable of starting 50 games a season for a team aspiring to win leagues and other big titles. It actually just reinforces the point that he should only be a back up for us at this point cos he was not able to perform so well last year expected to play every game.

I think you're missing the point. Kerkez isn't half the player peak Robbo was and never will be.

Nuts thing to say about a player who’s just turned 22, especially in comparison to a player who still had his breakout season at Hull ahead of him at that age.

Like, whatever you think of him, Kerkez is waaaay ahead of the curve for his age.

He might not reach that level, 99% of fullbacks don’t - it’s a very very high level, which Robbo achieved in a team built to platform fullbacks. But writing off an undeniably talented kid after a slow start (and once again - Robbo wasnt even trusted to play for the first half of his debut season with us) is just pointless, especially when we’ve already seen big improvements as he’s settled and started building relationships with his new teammates.

To be clear, I'm not completely writing Kerkez off. From what I've seen so far I just don't think he'll reach Robbos heights, or near it. Hope I'm wrong.

Fair play to Robbo. Club wouldn’t be entertaining this if he hasn’t given indication he is up for it.

He know his minutes will be limited and wants to play.

Give the man what he wants. As for Kerkez not being of same calibre or potential, probably same people saying a young 21 year old for 9m from Hull should never be considered for our LB.

It's crap, has totally been diluted, almost impossible for the big teams to get knocked, the competition really only starts in the knockouts. Also the random nature of who you play, also doesn't make it a level playing field, at least the previous group stages with home and away fixtures against the same teams was fair, plus also a bit of jeopardy if a big club were out of form.

The new conference league is the only good thing about the new European competitions, as it gives smaller teams and leagues like LOI teams a chance to progress in Europe.

I'm very conflicted on Robbo possibly going. On one hand he's a legend of the club who I wouldn't want to stand in the way of leaving for the last few months of his contract for one more pay day. He's clearly second choice now and getting very few minutes.

On the other hand our defense is already bare bones how can we justify letting him go without a replacement? It seems like negligence to do that and it's looking increasingly unlikely that we'll sign anyone this window. We seem very eager lately to cash in on players leaving without a back up plan (see Diaz in the summer)

I think.Robbo the player has greatly diminshed but his leadership role would be a big loss in a group already struggling in that area. He speaks really well and i would see a good coach emerging there someday.

The point was there in the post.

Robbo's mistakes last year are being overegged and Kerkez's this season are being underplayed.

My post wasn't saying Robbo should play 50 games season for us. So alot of that, if directed at me, is a bit strawman-ish.

Bottom line for me is I just think replacing Robertson with Tsimikas makes us worse, I don't like weakening the team in the middle of the season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,853 ✭✭✭✭noodler

    True.

I can understand Robbo can't play the amount of minutes in H2 of the season as he did in H1 and Captain Scotland in the WC though also.

The only pro is that the Greek will hopefully almost never play.

It does feel a little bit more like an admission that this season is turning into a dead rubber.

But the sample size is far too small for such a comparison or such a sweeping statement. Kerkez was in the PL team of the year last season so if you want to compare to Robbo at a similar age, things would be heavily weigthed in Kerkez's favour. As others have pointed out he's also shown clear progression from an understandably shaky start: new team, new system, new role. I mean, criticise him all you want for some individual errors (in a dysfunctional team) but you just cannot look into the future and say with any confidence he won't reach Robbo's heights.

It's bad for Liverpool but good for a club legend and I imagine the club recognise after years of phenomenal service that this is a big 6 months ahead for Robbo with Scotland's WC this summer. You could be hard-headed about it and keep him on the basis that he's clearly a better back up to Tsimikas (whojust isn't up to it for a CL team) but his game time would be limited (as will that of Tsimikas) so he's getting a move to allow him to play the football he needs. I'm with the club on this one but hate seeing him go.

I'd offer Robbo a 2 year contract and send him on loan for the rest of this season, his leadership quality is absolutely worth keeping around long term, i think he'd make a fine coach/manager in time too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,186 ✭✭✭giveitholly

And how will that work next season? He wants to play more regularly,he wanted to leave last summer and had agreed personal terms with A Madrid. By doing that you are kicking the can down the road and tying up wages on a player not playing for the club. We are not a city or Chelsea with the way we are run,we have to be a bit more savy.

The same thing happened when Henderson left. Plenty people wanted the club to give him a new contract for his experience, and the club got on just fine without him.

Robertson is a legend at Liverpool and I for one will always remember him as that. He seems like a really sound lad too, and has done plenty of hidden charity work around too. He's a big supporter of food banks.

I could write essays on how important he was for Liverpool, but I think it would be a bit lost as I'm not a writer who can use words properly!

But last season, every other week there was comments saying how Liverpool needed to buy a new young energetic LB who could take over from Robertson as he was starting to decline. That's what Liverpool did. There was even times where Tsimikas was being picked ahead of Roberson last season, on merit.

It's annoying to see him leave quite hurriedly but he was going to leave eventually. Let his legs go on someone else's watch, as the saying goes.

No Ekitike in the starting line up

    Alisson
    Frimpong Gomez VVD Kerkez
    Gravenberch Mac Allister
    Wirtz Szoboszlai
    Salah Gakpo

I was expecting him to be on the bench today and for Quarbag. He's played an awful lot over the last few months and he's tiring bad in the second half of games.

It looks like the 4-2-2-2 is here to stay.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 23,012 ✭✭✭✭FixdePitchmark

Why is Ekitike not playing ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,536 ✭✭✭✭TitianGerm

Because we have one CF and he can't start every game I'd imagine.

He’s only just back from that little thigh injury he missed a few games with too, I’d say they’ll be careful with too many games in a row now, and he started the last two this week already.

He's a dedicated professional with a relatively short career, I'm sure he wants his fitness and performance to be at the top his game by the time the World Cup comes, and that means playing regularly at a high level.

I think it is clear that Robbo is on the wrong side of the hill, much like Henderson, Milner and others felt. Nostalgia doesn't win games or score goals, just the way of the modern game. Klopp let many a dedicated decent player walk out the door during his time.

Having said that I personally would like Robbo to stay, but totally understand if we parts ways. Kerkez has definitely stepped up a gear of late, hopefully he can keep it up.

I thought that kit was with black shorts or does it vary?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,442 ✭✭✭✭Fitz*

Bournemouth are wearing black shorts and the 2 teams have to have different colour shorts to help colorblind players differentiate.

    Fair start.

Mo's shooting boots have never been as off as this season

Poor from Salah. Good run initially, but weak pass
