I’m sick of hearing that multinationals could “pack up tomorrow” and leave us worse off than 2008. That argument has been repeated for years while investment, employment, and tax receipts have continued to grow. Caution is sensible, but endless fear is lazy thinking. Yes, we should diversify into high-tech, fintech, agriscience, food-tech, and renewables. That’s exactly what you do when an economy is strong, not because you expect it to collapse. Planning for the future does not mean talking down the present. These companies didn’t choose Ireland by accident, and they won’t leave on a whim. Talent, EU access, regulation, and political stability matter more than scare stories. In a polarised world, stability attracts capital, it doesn’t run fr=om it.

I agree with all you have said. However, we are the biggest appeaser in the EU …. We will have a hard position to take (or taken for us) pretty soon. To be fair the consequences for us if it played out badly would be devastating….

Equally will the EU pivot more towards its own defence if NATO is coming unstuck…. Where does that leave us I wonder …

Also, this Trump fella. Fully aware of what he did the first time. It was continuous and endlessly nuts. When Biden took over it felt like the world could move on, I barely looked at American politics. Maybe time has been kind and the first time was exactly like this, but, this seems way worse. The guy is entirely unhinged. He needs to be locked up. He is speed running everything. Even Hollywood will have to change as the old trope of having America as the good guy is over. What a complete and utter shitshow.

I would agree with you. Ireland as a nation will face serious challenges in the years ahead. We've built much of our prosperity on bridging the gap between the US and the EU. That is likely going to become an impossible position to maintain. The implementation of the Anti-Coercion Instrument alone will cause serious upheaval in our economy. A full-blown trade war would be catastrophic, although I would imagine the EU would have to intervene directly to support our economy.

Another challenge which was inconceivable to think about until recent times is the question over the presence of the US military in Europe. If the US continues down an autocratic path, then there is a very real prospect of its troops being expelled from the continent. I’m not entirely confident the US will be willing to let Shannon Airport be withdrawn as a transport and logistics hub if that scenario comes to pass. It has strategic importance for the US military. We are an extremely vulnerable target in this regard considering our dire defence capability.

We would probably see intense interference in our domestic political affairs if a fundamental rupture between the US and the EU transpires in the years ahead. The US will attempt to vassalize us all but in name and there will be plenty of useful idiots to do their bidding amongst our own citizens.

There are eu members with lower ctr than Ireland for twenty years but it hasnt shifted the pharma/biomed sector because it has to be matched by investment in science education like we had since the 70s.

WTF would anyone pull the rug?

Do you know what the primary purpose of business is? To make a return for shareholders. Even if thats a shareholding of one, operating out of a laptop in a coffee shop.

And those businesses increase those returns by growing their base through investment.

And what are the factors that instill the confidence to invest? Stability, certainty and predictability.

For American corporates, and their shareholders, and institutional investors, all of those pillars are under grave threat in their own country right now.

And so, more than ever, they need to find that stable growth in their international bases and markets. You're forgetting that America is only 4.5% of the World. Europe is 500 million consumers. China is four and half times the size of America, in every respect.

Yes, the American economy is disproportionately large, but Trump is going out of his way to end that, and right quick too. How does any American corporation know that it won't be them he turns on next? He's hollowing out the low-value Labour market. If he grabs control of monetary policy from the Fed and sets interest rates artificially low, he basically ends the dollar as a reserve currency and makes the whole paradigm look like Argentina or Zimbabwe. Just watch the cost of living in America then...

I'm college educated in economics and international relations and I'm telling you you are talking utter rubbish.

But if you don't believe me, check out the key US indices since Trump came out with his latest nonsense about tariffing his partners.

Personally honest I'm just sick of this degenerate orange bollocks at this stage, if it not the brain rotting dementia kicking in harder at this stage to explain his increasing bullshít it's the pure cowardice and sycophantry coming from the rest of them in congress who could easily rein in this shítshow if they had the bloody spine to do so. This shít should have ended 5 years ago, Republicans had a choice to end this but they valued their own hide and a cult of a party over the national interest and here we are. That we're here possibly because of corruption in the 2024 elecion but mainly because 1/3 of US is a bloody cult and 1/3'd couldn't have bothered their arse to vote against the Republicans pontificating over the likes of Gaza etc just disgusts me personally.

I honestly don't know if he's gonna make a real attempt at capturing Greenland, if he actually orders it there's likely a good chance that sizable sections of the US military might not follow such an order (possibly could cause a civil war as well) but even at that the PoS has permanently damaged the US with this shít, if he actually does go for Greenland no matter what happens that's the point he's crossed the proverbial Rubicon, there's information circling that the EU will mass dump US bonds on the market in such a scenario with possibly Japan, Australia and the UK following suit and if they do that the Chinese will jump in as well. It would be the US's "Suez Canal" and end them as a Superpower as it would be the equivilent of an Economic Nuke will send their economy into a depression in such a scenario.

Honestly it's very likely that Europe will eventually capitalise on the US's degradation over time as the EU is basically the only other entity right now that really values the rule of law, China will capitalise elsewhere of course but the fact we're going through this shít not because of circumstances but because of weak impotent US politicians and a brain rotted suspected pedo convict and his administration of degenerates in the White House really has me wondering when these bastards will get their comeuppance because after 10 years of this shíte I just want to see an end to it even if it means seeing them getting some very ballistic consequences their way.

It's not quite as simple as you say. I've discussed this previously with the previous head of NUIG and Boston scientific head.

We have a, if you'd like to see it this way a community, that isn't easily replicated. I.e. we have the knowledge (i.e. colleges), facilities (as in the companies), and the research provisions (again the companies support)

To relocate this, takes a lot of time (i.e. the knowledge) but on top of that the dept.of education has prioritized free thinking as opposed to the pre 80s plan on factory workers.

To move this hub is a bigger issue than just tariffs. I.e.the Ireland plan took 20 years to implement.

But I think with AI, this might be done faster now. But keep in mind this is not across one company, it's a community - we have loads of research/med tec companies in Galway that achieve from NUIG graduates

US to cut roughly 200 Nato positions

The US plans to reduce the number of Nato personnel in key command centers, a move that could intensify concerns in Europe about Washington's commitment to the alliance, three sources familiar with the matter told Reuters news agency.

As part of the move, which the Trump administration has communicated to some European capitals, the US will eliminate roughly 200 positions from the Nato entities that oversee and plan the alliance's military and intelligence operations, said the sources, who requested anonymity to discuss private diplomatic conversations.

Among the bodies that will be affected, said the sources, are the UK-based Nato Intelligence Fusion Centre and the Allied Special Operations Forces Command in Brussels. Portugal-based STRIKFORNATO, which oversees some maritime operations, will also be cut, as will several other similar Nato entities, the sources said

Could this be his excuse to not go to Davos now?

    I doubt it.

Trump is never going to miss the chance to be centre of attention with all the world leaders there being differential and cowardly towards him and to speak/ramble incoherently from his bully boy pulpit about how he is the greatest human to has ever lived.

I saw an estimate on CNN tonight that Europe owns 3.5 trillion dollars of US Treasury bonds. Celebrated US investor Ray Dalio is warning of a capital war.

There are some reports Air Force One has turned around while on the way to Switzerland and returned to Base Andrews.

    Choices are I suppose...

    1. technical issue with plane
    2. Trump's thrown a tantrum and won't go
    3. Trump has a health issue.

Given his latest press conference/grievance speech, it could very well be 3.

Trump has just reposted a post on Truth Social saying NATO, the UN and "this religion" are the real threat, not China and Russia.

Trump now openly saying his Board of Peace could replace the UN.

Also its charter says Trump can remain in charge of it after he leaves office, and will choose its successor.

Also countries expected to pay $1bn for permanent membership. Putin and Lukashenko have been invited to join. UK reportedly concerned how this money might be used.

If countries do not pay the money, they are only temporary members though the chairman, Trump, can approve them staying on.

European and Arab countries concerned. Fears it could be use to legitimise US land grabs.

Also Daily Telegraph reporting Canada is preparing in case of a US invasion. Trump has posted a map showing Canada and Greenland as part of the US. Reports the military top brass say it would to be some sort of guerilla war like Afghanistan, as conventional resistance might only last 2 days.

To be fair, guerilla war eg Vietnam, Afghanistan, had been more successful against the US military than conventional force.

Reports China invited to join the Board of Peace.

Also reports from The New Republic that Trump publicly read out a note from Rubio at a meeting with Chevron where Rubio and the Chevron Vice Chairman were present. Unclear if this was cognitive decline or deliberate . Rubio grimaced.

Chevron is the only US oil company operating in Venezuela.

Reports Trump will only be meeting 3 European leaders in Davos, and will also attend a large banquet with executives.

If Russia & China are joining Trump's Peace Board, then why would acquiring Greenland for national security and to protect it and the US from Russia & China be needed?

Aye there's a video of that Chevron meeting that did the rounds last week, it's definitely worth a watch.

I thought it quite ironic that Newsom has criticised Europe in its approach to Trump - eh Gavin, just what exactly are the democrats doing right now to stand up to Trump, eh?

What do you want them to do ? They have no power.

They have to work towards the midterms now, and it seems they're doing that.

Obviously too early to tell and it's difficult to know if Trump will proceed with these threats . However if diplomany doesn't work and this ends up in a full blown trade war, how bad do posters think it will be for the job market? What industries will be hit hardest ? How bad will it get?
