Even as a fan of his, the new show is desperately poor. Just nonstop chatter about Hollywood movies and tv shows. Repeating the same old anecdotes about Russell Crowe and Paul McCartney. What value is there in him acting as a film reviewer or giving out movie recommendations? Everyone who wants to know about Hamnet or Stranger Things, already knows about them.

    Communication was the greatest fatality

Why not just broadcast the Obit podcasts before they die? Celebrating a long life of whoever it is.

He's clearly a bit lost and was possibly unaware of how outdated and mediocre his style of presenting is. The misery thing doesn't work in the UK.

Imagine waking up everyday thinking “ I wonder who is going to die soon”

He reminds me in a funny way of a certain kind of person you might know if you grew up in or near a small town. A big fish in a very small pond, prominent in school plays and sports teams, parents owned the shop or were local GPs. These people weren't necessarily unbearably awful, just held a very firm belief that they were destined to live better lives than the rest of us.

Sometimes a year of university and some failed exams would knock the arrogance out of them and they would retreat to the small town. You'd meet them if you went home at weekends, looking a bit bewildered and cowed but still full of big talk. "The course was a load of waffle, I'm going to reapply next year, in the meantime etc…"

The bewilderment was genuine, I think. What is wrong with the world that it has not opened its doors for them? How could everybody not see that they are uniquely talented? Why have they not been selected for great things?

That's what I see in Tubridy. He smarmed and nepo-ed his way into the limelight at a time when the word 'talent' was meaningless in RTE. Maybe compared to some of the charisma-vacuums that haunt the RTE canteen he is a dazzling star, but he still doesn't understand that in a bigger, more open arena like UK TV, he has nothing whatsoever to offer. He doesn't get that he's not special.

He's not talented or funny or witty or intelligent or erudite or original or charismatic or even attractive. He has experience, that's true, but he needs to adjust his asking price to reflect the fact that experience is all he has.

I watched a bit of the Youtube stuff but I couldn't hack it. It was like watching an animal trying to evade a bigger, faster predator. It just makes for sad and uncomfortable viewing.

So who IYO is a more talented presenter currently on Irish radio?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 876 ✭✭✭HazeDoll

I like Creedo, I used to love Sean Rocks. Some of the Morning Ireland regulars are bearable. There are some voices I like but can't put names to, many more that I can't stand. There's no shortage of mediocrity, that's for sure. I can't stand forced laddy banter. "Shure yeh can't be leaving the immersion on! Flat 7Up! Taytos and breakfast rolls! Gas altogether!"

There's something about radio that's more intimate than telly. You watch telly as a spectator but the radio is somehow more a part of your day. When I take a dislike to a voice on the radio I can't stand to have it on at all.

I don't think we'd ever be able to agree on a definitive list of talented presenters, it's very subjective precisely because it's so intimate.

I would love to hear Sinead Mooney doing a proper show of her own (maybe she has but I don't recall any). She actually worked with RT years ago.

Her satire is wasted on Playback.

Yes it's subjective and some people like listening to Tubridy and have enough sense to see through the hate.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,426 ✭✭✭GSF

would be nice if you could enjoy your pleasures without judging others though

You are free to defend him all you like. Calling everyone else as being clouded by hate is your own opinion

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 3,600 ✭✭✭Cyclingtourist

Well I didn't 'call everyone else as being clouded by hate'. I accept there are some who just subjectively don't like listening to him.

Mod - that's looks like a veiled dig at posters here, that is not permitted.

Apologies to any posters who just don't like listening to Tubridy who may have misinterpted my previous post as referring to them.

They should have given him Saturday and Sunday, as a chat show / music show. It needs to be live with a group of guesses going through the weeks news, they could bring in presenters from the local stations to sit in on the show.

I think people have a tendency to fail to see any of Tubs strengths and unfortunately he's been left with all his weaknesses. He's not someone I rate but I can clearly see what he's done over the last 2 years are his weaker spots.

    ______

In the end they were just greedy, they all knew one another and knew what to expect more money for no return, it was a secure cash flow, but in fairness they looked for what they wanted and fair dues to them for that, and wouldn't you be doing the same!

Just one more thing .... when did they return that car

Is he too big for lyric fm?

He should do one of his new project episodes on Marty Whelan and then have Noel Kelly cross his fingers. It's an ill wind...

He will NEVER return to RTÉ. How many times does this have to be said?

I didn't "decide" it. I just know it won't happen. He has said himself that RTÉ is in his rear-view mirror now.

You don't have any say in the matter. You don't 'know' it either, you've just got an opinion like everyone else on here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,580 ✭✭✭its_steve116

It's not an opinion. He's made it obvious he doesn't want to return.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 657 ✭✭✭Bulmers

what a podcast to be making, checking showbiz to see who’s nearly dead, recoding a program and holding it until they die..something you’d see on Alan Partridge.

And then putting Tubs in front of a sportsperson , he’d visibly squirm when they had sports guests on LLS 😀, resilience?..I think it’s more entitlement than resilience.

Noely trying to keep him relevant at all costs

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 3,600 ✭✭✭Cyclingtourist

    Well you're wrong.

Does he think he will ever work for RTÉ again?

“Why not? It would depend on the project.

From an interview with him in last Saturday's IT.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,468 ✭✭✭yagan

I know some people keep referencing Lyric as a possible future pad for him, but it's actually a lean dedicated music station where bluffers can't hide and music lovers will not suffer his inanity. From a few comments made Marty Whelan is certainly no fan of the nepo.

That must be Nigel with the brie...

I'm nearly certain BBC News do this already. They have a video memoriam for elderly celebs that looks back on their life and career prepared in advance so they can be on the ball and show it straight away when they die. David Attenborough would be a prime candidate for example.

I remember seeing a piece about it once.

It's very common for major media outlets to have obits ready so they can respond quickly when a death is announced. For instance, the BBC newsreaders always have black suits on standby incase the monarch dies and clips ready to play.

Tubridy isn't in quite the same league though and there's no reason for him to have obits lined up for YouTube, it's not where the vast majority will look when they hear of the death of a celebrity, politician etc.

Oh, he wants to return alright but he knows there isn't a hope in hell they will have him in the short to medium term.

Noel probably has the CV ready in a drawer for when Kevin moves on even though the work experience and achievements part are the reverse of pretty much anyone, ever, other than people who had to take a back seat for a while due to medical reasons.
