To a large extent, I think yes.
The defense companies are in it to make money, and contracts which have already been signed are likely to be honored somehow (even if through detached subsidiaries).

Plus there is a difference between “as bad as they are” and genuinely bad. No NATO countries are on the “prohibited from working with” list like China or Russia. Whatever silliness is happening at the higher political levels, things below the surface are continuing pretty much as they always have.

Simon Marks on LBC made a good point on LBC earlier. The US already has a treaty with Denmark which means they can do whatever they want in Greenland in terms of building military bases etc. Which makes it quite clear that this is purely a land-grabbing scumbag move to massage the Orange One's ego. You'd have to hope that the GOP in Congress will finally draw the line at this and veto any military action but there's no guarantees on that, considering how weak they are.

    Very hard to fight against

    1) populism,

    2) a cult

    3) poor education

    4) social media bubbles and support by the richest man on earth and his platform

    5) capitulation by certain news groups/organisations

    6) a stacked SCOTUS

    7) a Constitution not worth a f***

Elect a clown... Expect a circus

The only sensible reply to that from Hungary is that if the Russian bear decides to invade Hungary again, NATO and Europe will see no reason to come to it's aid whatsoever, that membership carries obligations.

Will be interesting to see how this pans out. He generally backs down and reverses once someone puts it up to him. The only time he has actually carried through on something fully is the Venezuala invasion and thats basically because no powerfull nation or group of nations really gave a damn about it.

Every set of "tariiffs" proposed over the last year has been rowed back.

    All threats to Russia…..rowed back

    All threats to China…..rowed back

Threats to EU last year….rowed back.

The only way to deal with him is with the same strongman tactics that he (tries) to use. He recognises no other form of negotiation. The EU knows what is required here and its time to put the hammer on him without any ambiguity.

If he does invade Greenland (which i don't believe will happen if the EU stand up to him) he's giving carte blanche for China to go into Taiwan the following day

He has a lot to lose if the right-wing Christians take a greater hold in the U.S. as they don't like the civil rights granted to gays making them more equal partners in the U.S population to people who believe marriage should be a religious rite alone. There are GOP and MAGA heads in the Trump Admin wing who approve heartily of conversion therapy for gays and oppose gays having parental rights.

Let me assure you that the current tension feels a lot worse than ‘silliness’ in the countries under threat.

If a US president decided to withdraw support for any equipment, no US company would disobey that order.

Germans are debating the repatriation of their gold reserves before Trump is able to appoint a yes man as governor of the Fed reserve in 3 months time.

When asked why, he said he feels he needs to own it.

Personally I think Trump has seriously miscalculated and painted himself into a corner.

Getting the military to invade Greenland would not be a problem for them. They have already shown they are not above committing a war crime following his orders.

His problem is that there is no support either home or abroad for him doing so. Even that lick-spittle Farage doesn`t support it, and with there being no great degree of support from Republicans in Congress, he and the military would both suffer censure from Congress for doing so. Things are looking bad enough for Republicans with the midterms coming down the track so even they know hiding behind the couch is not an option.

The fact that he is now resorting to tariffs attempting to get his way shows that there is no other options for him in his toolbox. They E.U. should just ignore him and if he does impose these tariffs then immediately hit him with everything they have of those €98 Billion tariffs. It was always coming to that anyway. Like all bullies you cannot make a deal with them and hope it will be honoured. They will just keep coming back for more until you stand up to them.

For Trump, selling his "Independence Day" tariffs to some in the U.S. sounded great at the time as a trade balancing exercise. Now that they realise nobody is paying them but themselves has taken a lot of the shine off. Trying to get himself out of a corner he painted himself into on Greenland, with E.U. tariffs creating job losses, will further take the shine off his tariffs by breaking a deal he had already reached with the E.U - not because of trade imbalance or security issues, but because of a hissy fit - will be a hard sell for him and even the most devout members of his cult.

Thats exactly what I was thinking of when I read about it first and now he is wanting nations to pay a billion for a permanent seat sounds like he is looking to line his own pocket as well while he is at it.

The Democrats position and what they "offer" is the same as it has been for years you have to vote for us as look how bad the other guy is. Its why they essentially stand for nothing and its why they have to share a portion of the blame for the American slide into authoritarianism/fascism and the existential consequences of that slide for the whole world.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,974 ✭✭✭✭briany

It's also necessary to fight against. The alternative is to shrug the shoulders, roll over and allow the country to be consumed by a wave of fascism that will plunge not just the US but the whole west into a dark age.

The time since then has seen 2 of the biggest wars ever. And we're currently in a state of forever wars and the 3 super powers trying to grab territory. Maybe you live in a bubble? The EU is a bit like that TBF. Not representative of the rest of the world.

If the USA take Greenland nobody will care in 50 or 100 years. The only chance is to stop it. Once uncle Sam gets it's hands on it, it won't let go.

Iraq have been asking for theirs to be returned for decades, same as Venezuela with the Brits. Fancy leaving your gold with them two to look after for you,it would be safer with Ronnie Biggs, did they get a receipt ?

Anyone who believes good faith is a part of a Donald Trump negotiation still believes in the tooth fairy

For me the answer is a clear no. The Americans cannot be trusted and relied on any more. It will take us in Europe a long time to completely disentangle ourselves from them but its what we need to do especially militarily and the more and more military equipment we buy from European defense companies the better. Which was why I was happy to see that Ireland is buying our long and much needed radar from France.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,974 ✭✭✭✭briany

Yeah, I believe that European leaders would table every possible concession on this other than openly ceding the territory of Greenland. Priority mineral access for US mining companies, priority shipping access for US freight and military and bases out the wazoo. Still Trump would talk of annexation.

If he's mad enough to go try and annex Greenland, then it's hard to imagine what's off the table. We laughed at his talk of making Canada the 51st state of the union when he banged on about it last year. We may be laughing on the other side of our face come the Summer.

His talk of wanting Greenland in order to exclude Russia is also so transparently false, it's comical. He's already talking of setting up this peace council thing with Putin, as well as openly siding with him on the matter of Ukraine. If Europe were to cede Greenland, it would be Europe who'd end up excluded from the new Arctic shipping routes as Trump turns around and cuts a grand bargain with Russia and China.

It's a convention that current Presidents do not criticize their

predecessors in the manner Trump does

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,192 ✭✭✭eire4

I would think that should be a really short debate and should basically consist of what time can we have the plane ready by!

Things are so bad now, imagine we are now Longing for the days when this guy was in charge........

Prior to Trump's bizarre intervention I hadn't realised how abysmally the Danes treated the native Inuit people in Greenland. Sterilisation forced assimilation, neglect etc. I had never thought of Denmark as a colonial power. European countries have a shameful record as colonial powers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,894 ✭✭✭threeball

They can ask for it but they won't get it. The US doesn't have it. Its estimated that the US has sold up to 100 times the physical amount of gold in "on paper" purchases. And people are starting to look for the physical asset because of the uncertainty and its not there. Last time they asked it took 3 years for the US to return the gold and it wasn't the gold they put on reserve on day one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,894 ✭✭✭threeball

The French are the only ones with a bits of balls. Everyone else is tiptoeing around the inevitable. French ministers are telling trump hes a fcukin idiot on tv every night as are their ex military. They were right about going their own route with nuclear and they're right about this.
