Sky - what are people paying?

    Hi All,

    Below is my monthly bill.

In my opinion, I'm ok with paying 63.50 a month ( I'm fortunate I can afford) for what I'm getting. For that price , I am getting basic tv package, sky in 2 rooms & broadband. Not great value but not too bad either.

I watch a lot of Premier league & golf. I have been using "alternative methods" the last 10 years or so to watch these but I have done my time now & I'm looking into adding sports to my package & specifically UHD for Sky sports main event.

Now Tv looks to be a cheaper option than adding it to my current sky package. For example UHD is 14 euro per month with Sky where as its 8 euro per month with Now tv. I have got used to watching UHD streams & its hard to go back to FHD :)

When i call Sky every year I usually negotiate somewhat of a deal but I doubt I will get broadband for 30pm for another year.

Can I ask if anyone has UHD as part of the sky package & what are you paying?

    Thanks

I imagine you would deffo get a deal on the broadband as most other providers are providing 1gb for 30 or 35 so they would be mad to loose a customer over not offering a deal but it is Sky after all so all depends on who you get.

How many consecutive years have you been a customer of Sky?

211 per month for absolutely every channel they offer (including netflix premium, multiroom, ultraHD, ultrafast plus broadband).

To answer your question about ultra HD, it's 4 euros per month but as part of my current discounts they're giving it to me for free.

How are you getting such big discounts OP? They're only giving me the 5 euros in-contract discount on Sky Signature. How did you get the extra 23.50 discount?

"Hello Mr. Sky, I want to cancel my contract, it's too expensive."

Can't remember exactly now but what I typically do is call 1 month before my contract ends & cancel. I wait & I usually get a call from them a few days before the cut off or else I will call tehm & then we start negotiations :) Their deals at this point are usually a bit better.

…and to get it down to 211, they're giving me 53 euros per month discount !

It's not really chicken - worst that will happen is you let your contract end, they cancel and you can sign back up then.

We tried that and 1 week before it was to be cut off, the boxes arrived to return the equipment.

They called us offering us the package of 1gb broadband, Sky Stream Basic TV (one room) and Netflix for €73 so I'm baffled and jealous how OP is getting these major discounts after 6 years with them.

    *edited to add "and jealous"

I've culled most of my Sky. Was paying €200 monthly for years have slowly cancelled services to where as I'm paying €30 a month for the basic package.

I had broadband with them for years. The contract expired and price became €65. They wouldn't go lower than €49. I asked them for €40 as I would get it elsewhere and unbelievably they said, that price is only for new customers, so I became a new customer elsewhere. I'm paying Vodafone €35 monthly.

Like yourself I watch loads of sport. I switched to Now TV which is still sky but cheaper. The price fluctuates but at the moment I'm paying €13.50 and €10 for sports and sports extra respectfully.

I use this great boards.ie thread when I need codes but honestly, I just set a reminder in my calendar for a few days before my deal is due to expire (usually every 6 months) I go threw the cancellation flow and generally get a cheaper offer.

€25 for both sport packages is fair tbh.

    Christ - eye watering prices.

Is it any wonder 'some' people are paying 70 euro per year for a dodgy-box sub.

I have sky cinema. Was paying 12 euro a mth for 12 mths. Went back to full price 20 euros there at end of November so I cancelled it as they would not do offer for it over phone. Then a wk later in my sky app was been offered it for 12 euro a mth again. Didn't renew it and about a wk later got an email in December saying special offer for 8 euro a mth for 12 mths. So I took offer as you get 2 free VUE cinema tickets per mth as well so there 12 euro anyhow to buy online as I use them every mth so basically im making 4 euro a mth at moment with sky cinema package as I use the VUE tickets every mth.

For years , ( 2000 to 2013 ) I paid top dollar for every channel sky had. Then I went on a Tool upgrade project which had me away from home for most of 2011 , the missus saw the bill , called them , and reduced it to the least amount possible , basically paying something like 30 quid a month for FTA channels.

When the project was over , started looking into alternatives.

    First it was a humax 1000s and a Saorview Box ( Triax ) .

Then I found out about enigma 2 on there , and bought a Tiviar Alpha , then 2 Zgemmas , one with an internal hard drive and then through jealousy one with the slot in the back.

All 3 died with the capacitor plague (swollen leaky caps ) so decided to go premium and got VU+ , also a couple of single tuner boxes to mess around with , the best of them being an Octagon S8008 Extreme , which takes an NVME drive and has unlimited OS slots , so I could try all the different versions of Enigma2 , Openvix is still the best.

I havnt paid a linear TV bill in years , but do pay yearly for Disney + and Apple TV is covered by the Missus Apple Family plan , which gives Storage , games , Apple TV and Apple Music for something like 27 per month. ( depends how much storage you take , we only took 200GB for photos only.) The Missus monitors that usage and only " real " photos are allowed to be kept , not endless tat like duckface shots and rate my plate nonsense that young people get up to these days.

The Apple deal is worth it for the Music Alone. Apple TV , not much on there , but what is on there is worth watching , Shrinking , Severance , Pluribus , Slow Horses , etc.

Satellite is due to end in 2029 ( by the looks of it ) but my boxes are just as adept with IPTV should it come to that , but even so , wouldnt really miss linear TV if it was gone tomorrow. ( except for BBC channels , no endless begging ads )

Bit of a tangent here, but has anyone the Whatsapp number to contact Sky on please? My discounts are up and out of contract. Very tempted to just cancel as all I watch is Irish and UK FTV channels, but I like Sky's user interface and ease of recording.

    Thanks,

When I was out of contract I called Sky. Best they could offer was €63 a month. That's for Sky Signature, HD and mini box in bedroom.

I don't have Broadband with them. I pay another €39 for that. I'd say if I got Sky Broadband as a package I'd save some money.

I have a fire stick but rarely use it. I'd use the recordings on Sky a lot.

I only have the basic sky package with HD and netflix sub for €49 per month. every year i tell them I am going to cancel and get it for cheap. I am in contract till May so ill ring them in feb and see

Shy Signature was €42 but gone back to €53.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 545 ✭✭✭pjdarcy

Agreed. It's not cheap but in fairness to Sky, they produce an excellent product. Their sports coverage alone is really exceptional. If I switch on a match a bit late, I can just click the red button to get the match highlights so far.

Have Sky signature + UHD + multiroom. The offer they gave me to renew last year was €45 p/m and it was going up to €66 from next month. Decided to try the WhatsApp for a renewal which I opened at 10am and I sh1t you not it was 17:20 by the time I finally jumped through all the hoops and received an offer. The offer was...€71 per month. The agent insisted my bill was going up to €86 and wasn't having it when I told them that was wrong 😂

I called the Irish # at 18:12, got speaking to an agent within 2 minutes and the call was over after 11 mins with a new deal. I agreed a new 12 month contract for €43, so it's actually cheaper than last year.

My advice is to not bother with WhatsApp. Call 1800927476, tell the automated system you want to cancel your TV and you'll get put straight through to the right place without any hoops to jump through.

Sky Signature, Sky Ultimate, Sky Sports Complete, Sky Sports Extra, Sky Cinema, Netflix, Ultra HD, Multiroom. Sky Q system.

€132 pm. Renegotiate every 6 months with contract extended to 12 months each time.

    I get broadband elsewhere.

Over €1500 per annum for sky without broadband.

    Jaysus.

    We did that today.

Have basic Sky TV for €33pm

Was just out of contract so next bill will be €50 odd

They said they could do it for €38pm for a year contract.

We were not willing to go over €35pm.

So we cancelled and they said no bother.

    With Sky for 22 years.

Had about a year break a few years ago when we did the same thing, cancelled basically, but they rang back a year later with a great offer.

I wonder will we be hearing from them in a year.

Moral of the story, they may call your bluff and let you just cancel.

I followed through with cancelling Sky Q last year with no intention of signing with them again. I got regular mails with various offers from the outset and about a month later I actually got a decent one for Stream.

Stream is infuriating and unless I get another good deal I'll be gone again, their Netflix premium price with their packages is good though.
