I'm near Fenagh. I'm not too far from Carrigallen. It was very showery. Cold last night. 0C.

This does feel like the first proper winter in a while even if most people didn't get snow. Plenty of cold temperatures, frosty mornings and clear night skies. I like the seasons to be this distinct.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth house?

Today we are at the halfway point already of meteorological winter.

Was just thinking this last night - since mid-December at least, it has been much more seasonal with cool days (yes there has been an odd mild day) and cool to cold nights with lots of frost. For this part of the country anyways!

The mild spell (December 5th to 14th) probably scuppered the month's chance of being below average - it ended up ~1c above. January so far is quite below average and if the cold returns, it could make January a notable cold month overall.

Thankfully, there has been no major wind events and we dodged a bullet with the one that hit Cornwall and NW France.

Very frosty this morning, on my commute on back roads seen most amazing clouds, only way I can describe them was like big pink flufffy marsmallows across the sky! Could't take a picture as driving and few munutes later back to normal clouds but delighted I seen them!

As Sryan was saying , there are great skyscapes to be seen after a clear early morning sky meets an incoming 'weather front' ( i sound like Mark Bowe ). You just get that golden 2 minutes to enjoy before it collapses. The timing always coincides with morning school fever so it's hard to capture. Maybe Sryan was out !

Some seriously heavy rain in parts of the mid-west at the moment. Was rain of such intensity forecast?

Was there any doubt that Sryan was out? 🤣

Shots from Portmarnock this morning, lenticulars galore. A beautiful crescent moon rising as well before all these clouds came, it was a very clear night.

looked like some intense rainfall on the way here in Meath but it's passed through, looked very heavy on the radar but barely a drop of rain fell out of the sky.

Just looking back at the start of 2013 and it's amazing how cold it was. After a mild first week of January it was bitter cold until the second week of April. Lots of strong E,SE and NE winds, hard frosts, snowfall, floods, stormy winds and freezing fog. It had everything. Snowfall amounts were not major except the extreme blizzard on the eastern side of Northern Ireland.

The one thing that's really stood out to me since Autumn is how calm it's been. Sure we've had a couple of storms and some yellow wind warnings but for most of us it has been a very benign season. I can deal with any weather but I detest the wind. I don't want to speak too soon because the cold spilling into the US can really ramp up the jet on us and send a few storms our way, and it's a distinct possibility in the next few weeks but hopefully we get into February without any significant wind event. I've quite enjoyed this winter so far.

I didn't think today felt cold at all, not here in Meath, it was a lovely day unbroken sunshine all day and didn't need a jacket.

Same in Limerick. The calm conditions, blue skies and sunshine gave a slight feel of spring. I went to the local recycling centre and just wore a jumper without feeling cold. A lovely day.

There were 3 beautiful days this week so far, yesterday being the exception. Looks like a bit of frost tonight.

Beautiful starry night. They have been a feature of the past number of weeks. I'd expect another frost and tricky roads tomorrow.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth house?

No slow down in the January sunshine here in Dublin, even after the very clear northerly winds had passed. The month is on 51.6 hrs after only the first 15 days. The whole Jan 1991-2020 monthly average is only 59.9 hrs so have already seen 86% of the average.

This continues a run of sunny Januaries that's been ongoing since 2022.

    2022 - 6th sunniest on record

    2023 - 3rd sunniest on record

    2024 - 9th sunniest on record

    2025 - 4th sunniest on record

    *Dublin Airport records since 1942

Will the rest of January 2026 continue in a sunny vein? If easterly winds do occur, it will likely have a dramatic slowdown here similar to December. December had a very sunny first 16 days with over 40 hours (very good for that month) then only an extra 19 hours in the rest so it was only a little sunnier than average overall.

A light southerly breeze this morning, and it's one of the the damn coldest southerly I've ever encountered in Ireland.

Absolutely lethal in Celbridge with black ice on footpaths - took me 25 mins to do what's usually a 10 min walk. Roads seemed fine. No ice at all around Liffey Valley, which is usually frozen when everywhere else is fine. Lovely sunshine.

1C. No frost last night. Nice to see the temperatures nudging up a little. Leitrim.
