But has the intensity of the game and mins played per seaon dramatically increased..As a sport we might have to accept..PL careers will be few and far between above 30 ?

Be Good to see what way data is trending on average age in PL.…it seems younger and younger.

In my opinion Rio will play fully in squad now..he is clearly ready…I think Slot seems to have issues with youth or experimentation in general.....

tbh I think we're seeing the exact opposite… players who used to be winding down by 30 are now playing at that level until they're 35. The likes of Jordan Henderson and Granit Xhaka coming back to the league in their 30s in the engine room and looking strong. As long as players careers are managed responsibly, and they take care of themselves, they can play longer than they ever have.

Like, I agree that technically Rio is ready to play - that's never been in question - but I think physically he has to be minded very carefully so he doesn't follow in the footsteps of so so many other young players who were overplayed and suffered lasting damage because of the massive physical demands of the league's intensity on bodies, joints, ligaments, and muscles that are still developing (need only look at the desperation of Barca in recent years who've had a whole clutch of wonder kids who've been broken because they had to play week in week out. I really fear for Yamal there).

Ekitike and Wirtz have a good understanding. If they both stay fit it could be an interesting end to the season.

While I agree with the sentiment of your post as in mistakes will happen etc. This was more than a mistake imo, this was a player show boating in his own box because he didn't give the opposition the respect they deserve. It's the same reason he didn't celebrate his goal, he felt above this game and that is an attitude that does need to be addressed as soon as possible.

I wouldn't look for insta punishing a mistake but playing like the game is beneath you is unacceptable. And for me Dom's attitude has been close to impeccable since he arrived but that was sheer arrogance to even attempt that in his own box and it should be stamped out asap.

How much did Milner play in those first couple season after breaking through at 16 I wonder.

He did a stupid thing in a moment, in a game in which he was also one of (if not THE) best player on our team today. I think it was overly casual more than actively disrespectful or showboating. But regardless of the details of the error itself, I hate these supposed righteous demands that lads be made an example of instantly. It offers a little insight into a real cultural problem that we're seeing more and more of, where just being a bit annoyed by something isn't enough - someone must be punished! There must be a sacrifice! It's an idiotic and dangerous outlook.

The fact Milner is literally everyones go-to for longevity (including my own) shows how much of an outlier he is. Fella's an absolute freak of nature, who also takes unbelievable care of himself, far above and beyond the norm. One of the most impressive PL careers ever. He broke Rooney's young goalscorer record a few weeks later, and my god there's some contrast for self-care and longevity! Rooney obviously also a legend, but the difference in how they've aged is remarkable for two greats.

    I agree.

If anything the acti9n to take is keep them on the field and make them bust their bollox to make up for their mistake for the rest of the game.

If you dont see them doing that then hook them

Dom is one of the few bright lights in the team , a future captain , and who imo we should be building our team around for the next few years

He made a silly mistake but he has already apologised , time to move on.

I've said this consistently, there is no Ola E for lads of 15 or 16 8n adult pro football. None. It's tantamount to child abuse IMHO, and plain wrong - just because those 6 year Olds were able to clean the chimneys in the cotton mills doesn't meant that was correct and it was changed. I might be over egging it a bit with that comparison, but it's not far off. These kids can be manipulated and their bodies are not fully developed. Managers are there short term, and by and large don't give two fvcks as to what's in the lads interests.

    It's wrong.

The Dom thing is totally overblown - not helped by the likes of that insufferable McCoist. Trying risky passes or keepers doing drag backs etc is not rare in your own box. The only issue is it didn’t come off, was silly and unnecessary but all this disrespect stuff is completely off the wall if you ask me.

He should get a good slagging this morning at training and forget about it then.

4 well taken goals but that aside, that was another pedestrian performance of mostly sterile possession, and yet every time Cleary got the ball we looked vulnerable. This brand of football is horrendous to watch, bar the odd moment of individual magic.

First game where we've scored more than 2 goals and actually won the match since Frankfurt in October! We haven't scored more than 2 in the league since the Leeds 3-3 on Dec 6th, and haven't scored more than 2 in a PL win since Newcastle in August.

"Playing it safe and hoping for moments of magic" is exactly how it feels at the moment…but it doesn't even feel that safe!

In more encouraging news though; Wirtz, Ekitike, Frimpong, and even Kerkez are all steadily improving imo.

I know I sound like a broken record with Slot and his terrible squad management but there are a number of examples again last night.

    1. Not including any academy payers to give them signs of a pathway
    2. Including the likes of Ramsey and Endo, who he refuses to give any playing time to anyways.
    3. Taking Chiesa off at the first opportunity possible. Which also means that Gakpo was forced into playing the full 90 mins. Chiesa is a squad player so use him in these situations.
    4. Konate having to come on on 60 mins, and ended up picking up a knock. Why not use Endo here?
    5. The refusal to use Ramsey also meant that Szoboszlai ended up doing the usual move to RB, against League One opposition. This resulted in Szoboszlai having to do yet another full 90 mins. He collapsed on the ground at the end of the match as he is being ran into the ground. He has played 28 games for Liverpool this season, from a possible 30. He has played the full 90 mins in 27 of those games. I massively fear that he's going to break down soon.
    6. Rio's cramp injury was another opportunity to use Ramsey and it was not taken. Instead he brought on Gravenberch and working him instead of getting a complete rest into Gravenberch. It was also a very defensive move.
    7. Nyoni getting a token 5 minutes at the end.

Last night was the perfect opportunity to both get some rest into Szoboszlai amongst others, also use the squad players and it was not used.

Yeah with 5 games across 15 days it's a little crazy to start all 3 of our senior RB options against Barnsley (Frimpong, Gomez, Szobo) when Ramsay is once again sitting on the bench not getting a second.

Especially when Frimpong has had plenty of injuries this season, Gomez is always getting injured, and Szobo is our best midfielder and being run into the ground at the moment.

Before moving to Newcastle at 18 Milner had played nearly 50 games for Leeds in two seasons (18 in his breakthrough), although he wasn't a starter much of that time. Throughout his career though he tended not to play every single game, as he was never the no.1 starter on a team just an integral part of a rotation strategy. He did play in the majority of games most seasons though.

In addition he was always super fit, if memory serves he used to win the pre-season fitness test at Liverpool most of the time. He also retired slightly young from international duty, giving him much need time off and recovery. I think the combination of having a higher than average fitness, but never being required to completely run himself into the ground enabled him to stave off injuries, and maintain a healthy body all this time.

He clearly had a really good head for managing his own fitness & diet decision etc. By doing so it would seem he has given himself 5 or 6 additional seasons of playing time at the top level, as well as performing on elite teams for longer (with maximum wages) than many others full senior careers (13 seasons at Liverpool & City) including winning multiple premier leagues, and a champions league, FA cups etc.

Milner to me represents exactly the type of career a not necessarily world class, but talented, level-headed and dedicated player should aspire to have, and it is in the interest of the clubs, and the player to try and balance their workload to achieve it. I'm fully supportive of how Slot and LFC are managing the likes of Ngumoha.

Hugo Ekitike has matched a goalscoring record only previously achieved for Liverpool by Kenny Dalglish.

The forward came off the bench and netted as the Reds beat Barnsley 4-1 in round three of the Emirates FA Cup at Anfield on Monday night.

That means that Ekitike has now scored in the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup and FA Community Shield this season.

And, as per Opta football data editor Michael Reid (@MICHAEL _reid11), that makes the France international just the second player to score in five different competitions during their debut campaign with the club.

Ekitike follows Dalglish, who netted in the league, European Cup, FA Cup, League Cup and European Super Cup in 1977-78.

Nice, love random stats like that 🤣

ICYMI yesterday, Szobo became only our third player to score from outside the box in the PL, CL, FAC and LC, after Stevie G and JA Riise

Utterly bonkers. Shows a complete lack of ambition for this season and a lack of faith in what was being built last Summer. We already needed a new CB in order to be more confident of a top 4 finish and to make a proper run at the CL. But we're now down a starting CB and RB. It's bonkers. We'll be lucky to hold on to 4th. We'll probably make the last 16 of the CL but will be promptly knocked out.

While its clearly fustrating we won't be signing anyone this January,it shows the club will only sign players they have targeted, and i presume those players are not available this window. Of course its a risk and could come back to bite but I am glad we are not signing players just for the sake of it

FSG have already financially written off this season, and are comfortable enough with getting top 4 (which still should be very much on the cards) as well as a decent run in the champions league (which in any season requires a decent amount of luck).

They are already making youth deals for the future in the hopes that one or two will pan out for the senior team, and in the next 6 months they will assess those purchases, and target new players in critical areas. They never really buy numerous areas at once, and our CB struggles have been there all through Klopp's management and tbh we have never had a solid CB pairing through their whole period of ownership imo.

The only thing that makes sense is that they see backup defenders as not worth the value to purchase vs backup attackers who can bring something different off the bench. It's also why we have seen them move back midfielders into defence when players get injured (Milner, Szobo, Endo etc.). Personally it seems like business decisions from the club, and not on the manager imo. Having said that it seems to have worked out ok for them for the most part.

That's well and good when we're looking to build on the qualities of the existing squad. The scenario right now is that we have no starting RB and only 1 dependable CB. The club should have a rolodex of players on their radar that they can make a move on if needed. And the need is there right now. My only hope is that they are doing the business quietly and we'll see Guehi sign "out of the blue". That would change the picture and we could at least have a starting line up of Kerkez - Virg - Guehi - Frimpong

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,201 ✭✭✭giveitholly

That they can move on if they needed? Easier said that done, presume any player we get in now as a stop gap would be getting an increase in wages from what they were on at their former club. What if that player doesn't want to move on. Whatever fee we pay for them and wages they take up can't be used to go towards our first choice player.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 895 ✭✭✭SodiumCooled

Not to disagree with your general point but Frimpong is a starting RB.

The only thing I don't understand is why they don't just get a stop gap CB on loan

Someone like Axel Disai from Chelsea or Bella-Kotchap from Southampton who have PL experience but arent playing for their clubs but are full France / Germany internationals so aren't kids

Deal until the summer, train with some players they'll know from international duty, no expectation to play but will maybe get on in a cup game and at minimum on the bench every game just in case

I get the overall thinking to wait until the summer, but we've loaned players before and already have 2 defenders with season ending injuries so it seems sensible and low risk compared to either paying over the odds for someone you don't want or holding out until the summer only to have another injury after the window closes
