I think Naughton and John Devine were huge losses, they seemed to be at the heart of everything good they did last season. They've also lost two of the other first choice backs and JJ Hanrahan, who seemed to be well regarded as backs coach, as well as changing head coach.

Hopefully they can turn a corner as Connacht could do with a side in 1B! Is that the Devine who moved to Terenure?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,729 ✭✭✭realhorrorshow

Yes same one, I assume he had to go to a div 1 club as he signed a senior deal this season, although Finn Treacy played in 2B for Galwegians at the weekend so not exactly sure how that rule works.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31 RugbyAcount222

Finn Treacy might still be academy?

Thanks for that! He might be shacked up with a Galway missus and she’s holding him at gunpoint to play for a Galway side…

Hearing rumours of Leinster releasing a lot of player this week.

Are munster doing the same? (Kendellen, O Brien, Salanoa)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,138 ✭✭✭For Petes Sake

Kendellen played for UCC last week so no reason to think they won't, unless he's a 24th man.

Ulster likely releasing a few too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31 RugbyAcount222

I just saw Munster team this afternoon. Kendellan on the bench.

Sean O Brien starting for Nenagh Darragh McSweeney on bench

Tarf have few playing, Nenagh playing the game on grass pitch first time since getting the all weather surface theyre playing an AIL game on grass

That’s interesting Nenagh are playing Clontarf on the grass, any particular reason? Surely a slog out would suit Clontarf? Hugh Cooney, David Hawkshaw, Niall Smyth, Alex Usanov, Alan Spicer are all released this weekend.

Terenure get JJ Kenny, John McKee & Casper Gabriel.

    Lansdowne without Tector or Foley

UCD with their Irish 20s outfit togging out this eve. Love a Friday night game!

UCD reserved that win based on play alone tonight were just up for it more lansdowne on that game just might have forced it one too many at closing minutes of the game

8 rounds down last games next weekend before christmas break

1A Marys and Clontarf pulling away from the pack. 7 clear of 3rd. Nenagh now very adrift at bottom on 0 with UCD and Belvedere next on 15

1B Wesley point ahead of Instonians Armagh and Trinity just behind them. Queens and UCC at bottom with Blackrock surprisingly in 8th

2A Barnhall on 8 from 8 and 9 clear of 2nd place Dungannon. Corinthians in 3rd with it tight for 4th with Shannon Wanderers Greystones all quite close Banbridge 4 off Ballymena at bottom and theyre game postponed at weekend so win for either when that games played could change things up a lot in 2A

2B Galwegians perfect total of 40 from 8 games 13 clear with Malone, Bohs, Clogher Valley and Sligo all on 5 wins with just bonus points splitting them. Navan and Enniscorthy level at the bottom 9 points off 8th place Rainey.

2C. Clonmel lead Thomond by 5 but Thomonds game against Midleton had been cancelled.Monkstown and Bective in 3rd and 4th a point behind Thomond. Malahide in the relegation spot to Junior 8 points behind Ballyclare in 9th

1A is almost like 2 leagues. Same old every year, top teams pull away. Mary’s look the best from what I’ve seen. Really interesting to see Terenure lose this past weekend, Carlos seeing what the AIL is like in the winter time! Young Munster took a while to get to winning ways but they’ve got a couple of nice results recently. Clontarf have been winning well since their opening day loss. I fear for UCD after Christmas. Lansdowne missing a good few from their clash last Friday. Would hate to see another Munster team go down. It would really

Wesley have gotten their house in order this year, lost heaps of players last year but recruited very well this year.Morgan’s men leading the charges. Fenlon, Black, o Connor and Carrol have really done well for them since coming in. Instonians doing what they’ve done the past few years. Trinity in the top four after a relegation playoff is interesting, new coaching group in Trinity this year. Armagh and Instonians will be a great match up before and after Christmas! UCC & Queens seem like they struggle when they don’t have many lads released.
Blackrock have had a few delayed returns but will be a serious outfit after Christmas I reckon.

Barnhall are flying on two fronts, AIL and 20s, seems like their club is going the right direction. Wanderers back to winnings ways with Sean Skehan.
Hopefully get an ulster or Munster team uo this year! Greystones ran Barnhall close this weekend.

Ormand how was the game this weekend?

That's a fantastic effort from Clonmel in 2C. I know with the formats changing next season it won't make a difference at the end of the season but it just goes to show how a lesser-renowned club can build itself up in the senior ranks.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 5,320 Mod ✭✭✭✭Lost Ormond

1A all too often is like 2 leagues with a league for top 4 and then relegation. Yeah Cookies have picked points up every week 4 bonus points more than any other side joint most try bonus as well.

Nenagh were always going to find 1A tough but not sure they expected to be this adrift at this stage. shame for them.

I have only seen clips of games from last few weekends shannon corinthians and shannon ballymena are last AIL games ive caught due to work

Trinity like many uni sides go in phases so in some ways not surprising they are that bit stronger compared to last season with the turnover of players uni clubs had they will go so up/down season to season.

Saying it wont make a difference isnt really true as very much can be built on next season regardless and its bit unfair to say theyre a lesser renowned club and theyre probably one of clubs with biggest potential to do well if they were to go up divisions. plenty of support, in a big town. have top class facilities(better than many division 1 clubs…)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,138 ✭✭✭For Petes Sake

They are lesser renowned in rugby circles. It's great to see them bridging that gap slowly but surely every season.

I wasn't trying to be offensive or glib. I like seeing newer clubs to senior rugby making an impact.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 5,320 Mod ✭✭✭✭Lost Ormond

fair enough just think its bit wrong to say theyre less renowned. theyre a club since earlu 1900s. competed in munster senior cup in those early years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,138 ✭✭✭For Petes Sake

I was referring to in senior rugby terms.

I'm originally from a club that has never played senior rugby so I wasn't trying to turn my nose up by any means.

    Halfway through league now.

    any thoughts?

Really good win for Belvo today against Nure. McKee and Kenny released from Leinster. Chris Cosgrave was at 10 for them, obviously don’t follow Nure each week so not sure how long he is there but I thought he was out in Japan playing. Thought he was going to be the next big thing at Leinster when he was going through school. Pity it looks like it hasn’t worked out for him in the pro game.

From the games I’ve seen, would say the top 3 in 1A will be making the play offs. 4th a toss up between a few. Nenagh looking doomed. UCD and Belvo likely fighting for 8th.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 374 ✭✭luke9311

yeah think top 4 looks like what it could get up come business end of the season although the order might change. That said i wouldn't rule out a con or cookies sneaking in there at 4th. cons record history speaks for itself and well cookies… 6 out of 9 try bonus points and 5 out of 9 losing bonuses is some going, theres being so many games they came very close to winning and were unlucky tbh and their winger kept them in so many games to date if they keep that record going in the second half of the season with a few of them close encounters swing there way you just never know. The ucd win against lansdowne also i feel will hugely benefit them big time come end of season if they want to avoid a 2nd from bottom scenario. Anyone else got thoughts as were now half way through?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26 CBC14

Tarf looking formidable, good squad depth, they will be tough to stop. Mary’s will be disappointed with being nilled at home. Some response from Lansdowne. Terenure have lost 3 on the bounce and by all accounts very poor yesterday, they seem to be on a slide. Con and Munsters have wind at their backs, I’d expect both to be right in the battle for top 4. Hinch starting to drift, gut punch yesterday, Belvo & UCD will be battling to the death for 8th, both teams I think will be in 1A next season as I think the gap to 1B this year is significant. Nenagh having a very tough year, but hopefully they can regroup over Christmas & get some better performances in 2026. Still can’t see them getting anywhere near 9th. 1 b is very entertaining, Wesley may finally make their breakthrough but Instonians will be breathing down their neck. Naas, Garryowen & particularly Blackrock very disappointing, with all Blackrock signings I expected them to be right in the mix.

in 2 a, Barnhall looks a cert, Wanderers seem to be hitting fine form aswell, could see a few more Dublin / Maynooth clubs in Div 1 next year. Galweigans look too good for 2B, 2C very even

Very disappointing loss for us v Belvo. Who were full value for the win it seems. Always a shame to finish off pre Christmas with a defeat. But lots of rugby still to be played.

Clontarf obviously look very strong and Barnhall and Galwegians seem in alot of control in their respective leagues.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31 RugbyAcount222

Clontarf at the top of 1A at Christmas after winning the league the year before is impressive. Their squad depth is impressive and they’ve been on a serious run since game week 1.

UCD are also doing very well. Surprising almost considering how many players they have lost to other teams in this league.

The most impressive team has been Mary’s. There is an edge to them this year, they didn’t finish the last block well, but still they possess the best attack and have kept a lot of teams to less than 20 points. Nenagh unfortunately seem doomed. They would be my standouts in 1A so far. The race for fourth will be a slog between Con, Terenure & Cookies who I think will be a dark horse.
It’s important to note that Terenure, Lansdowne & Marys would be toted as the best ball in hand playing sides. It will be interesting to see where they end up once this rough winter weather passes. Has there been any coaching changes in 1A?

In 1B it’s an impressive first half of the year for Wesley. Only one loss and that was to Instonians away. Instonians doing what many expected so not too much of a shock. Wesley, like UCD lost more than half of their side last year. Now, they sit top. It won’t be great for 1A for another Dublin side to come up. Queens have been crippled with injured but aren’t too far away from 7th / 6th so a big second half of the year from them could see them stay up. Unlikely unless they get massive help from ulster though. Trinity have to be the other big shock. From surviving by the skin of their teeth to being in 3rd. Highfield also, they just avoided the drop but have some real momentum, running Wesley and Instonians close. Naas & Blackrock have been really poor considering the quality of sides they have been putting out regularly.
Armagh will have a big say in where this league goes but are doing as expected I would say, Top 4 and have beaten some of the top sides.

Was at Terenure v Belvo, good contest. Not sure if Terenure have the firepower to win it all but tough as nails at home. But it seems St. Mary's or Tarf are probably a cut above the rest. Tarf's pack is one of the best I've seen in years at this level. Nenagh seem to be getting a lot of BP and close losses but are certain to go down. Battle for other relegation spot will be very competitive it seems. Old Wesley beat Blackrock again and Instonians close behind them after their win, will be a good battle for top spot in 1B. Naas & 'Rock seem to be struggling for wins, also heard Rock had to play a coach earlier today due to injuries. Barnhall look set for 1B too and interesting to see Monkstown and Bective battling it out high up the 2C table.

tough for Hinch to lose two tight ones to Tarf either side of Christmas. Nenagh obviously went all guns blazing, defensively seems to still be huge issues, but a gutsy display by the looks. UCD well beaten in Con to be expected, Terenure get revenge for their loss to Belvo and right in the thick of top 4 race. Although I Think Con will get in at some point. 1B, Rock in big danger of getting relegated. Wesley look like they will finally make it to the summit. Barnhall, Shannon & Wanderers seem to be the form teams in 2A. Bohs back on a winning run in 2B, great to see Monkstown, Thomond and Bective thriving after years in junior rugby.
