I saw Dunnes in Oakville are applying for planning to combine two of the old units out the front!

Yeah, I've heard a few bangs going off, I'm in the poppyfields area (probably gone off in the distance)

Does anyone know what the Suir Vale House building was used for (out of curiosity)?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 578 ✭✭✭BagofWeed

Drinking. And it was divided into bedsits too. A lot of residents with addiction and or other issues but unlike nowadays then they had a roof over their heads and could get that accommodation.

In fairness (and before I came to Clonmel) I believe it was a respectable bed and breakfast guest house. It may have gone a bit downhill in it's latter years. Someone once said said that since their baby left them they were down in the Suirvale Hotel.

Just when Covid hit they had planning up for a coffee shop / cafe. Perhaps, seeing how popular Bodega is at Lidl, they are going for it again - it would be a great addition to the shopping centre

I know I'd be in a minority here but I much prefer the Oalville Dunnes than the Davis Road one.

Thank you for the replies @BagofWeed @cml387. I guessed it's been abandoned for years and it must've been a commercial building at some stage, but I couldn't figure out what since there's hardly any information about the building itself. Cheers!

It's certainly a lot easier to get in and out of Oakville. One might wonder why Clonmel is "blessed" with two Dunnes stores (at one stage three Dunnes stores when the one in O'Connell St. was open).

It goes back to 3Guys, Albert Gubay's foray into pile high/sell cheap, who built the site on teh Waterford Road. 3 Guys closed and was taken over By H Williams which in turn closed. At this stage Dunnes had built Oakville but bought the H Williams store to keep out anyone else.

Same here but the traffic and getting a parking spot can be brutal at times.Getting in and out is tough at times.

I avoid it on Fridays & Saturdays, rarely a spot and so awkward getting out if you’re turning right.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,293 ✭✭✭KanyeSouthEast

I see shoe 4 you on O Connell Street is closing. That’s a loss to the street for sure. Always thought that store was doing well.

Wasn't Suirvale also flats at one time as distinct from bed and breakfast ? . I knew a couple who lived there who worked in a factory. That was before it was run down and home to drinkers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 578 ✭✭✭BagofWeed

Was divided into 6 flats/bedsits and was owned by a Mrs Joyce, Colville Rd.

Good list but you omitted to mention the Active Retirement Clubs for both men and women in Place 4 U

Sorry… how is Banna Chluain Meala ( a youth band) and Clonmel Og (juvenile GAA club) suitable for older people to join?

Did you just cut and paste or do an AI job on this list?

Not a great showing from Clonmel in the Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) annual rankings, published today.

Clonmel is ranked at 36 (out of 40 urban areas) and is described as "moderately littered".

It's ranked just ahead of well known shiteholes, Northside of Cork, Ballymun, Ballybane in Galway and Dublin's North Inner City.

    Embarrassing but not surprising.

Cleaner cities bring nationwide reduction in litter levels in 2025 | IBAL

If older people have an interest maybe they can do useful work on the committee or part of the back room team.

There are many older / retired people who could train, volunteer, be a supporter - there’s a bar in Clonmel Og which would need someone over 18 to work in etc. There is plenty anybody could get involved in, regardless of age.

Has Clonmel reached its optimal size in terms of population? The town has been overlooked by successive Governments as far as industry is concerned! To a great extent this can be attributed to not having a voice at the cabinet table. (it goes all the way back to the 1950s to when General Richard Mulcahy represented Tipperary as a minister.

Anyway, we are where we are today and the best Clonmel can hope for is to become an attractive place for retired people. Maybe it’s a blessing that the town’s population growth has been stalled as the drug problem is more serious in larger towns and cities.

Clonmel has much to offer to retired people see my posts 9981 and 9986 for some ideas.

Honestly I don't see how the population in Clonmel has stalled. I might however be stifled by the lake if housing. Id wagering that the current crop of new houses being built will be snapped when the reach the market.

I don't disagree with your other point about the oversight by successfull government both local and National.

Are they what's going into the old Iceland store in the showgrounds. It's all boarded up as if work is going on in there.
