I think we need to stop thinking in terms of guard rails, here, saying 'That can't happen, because this would happen as a result'. International politics is rapidly moving into wild, unpredictable territory. It works to Trump's advantage if people just think norms will hold. It breeds a certain complacency and inaction. When you think the guard rails will just hold, you sort of think you don't really need to do anything, and then it's a shock when Trump acts and faces little to no consequence.

It would be unpopular within the US… among the cohort who already hate Trump. Frankly, I think Trump relishes stoking those divisions domestically. It galvanises his base.

It would be unpopular around the world…. I was reminded by African countries reaction to the Ukraine war that non-western countries don't necessarily care about western affairs or are even sympathetic to who we would usually consider the good side.

Economically damaging…… Regimes like Trump and Putin don't seem overly worried about economic fallout from their jingoistic, nationalistic policies. If they were, Trump might have reconsidered introducing economic isolation via tariffs.

As for European countries commandeering US bases in protest, I don't think they'd have the balls for that, but, hey, prove me wrong.

Would Denmark actually defend Greenland if the Trump administration was batsh1t crazy enough to try something

I wonder does Senator Susan Collins still think trump will learn.

They couldn't do it on their own, but Europe has 120k artic trained troops. US has 25k, 15k of which are in Alaska. They would need to empty Alaska to be able to put boots on the ground in Greenland if it were contested. Uncontested they can send any old hick up there as they'll never need to leave camp.

They have 20000 active personnel (across Navy, Army and Airforce), plus reserves. F-35's (which I'm sure the US have built in Kill switches for) and Leopard tanks.

No strategic bombers, aircraft carriers, or large offensive missile systems.

    Speciality is Arctic warfare.

Yeah the drama as we watch America annex one country after another every few days .

In the 1970s many American parents were worried about their children joining cults. Now it's the other way around.

Getting to the stage where every small country is going to need to nukes as the only to ward off their rapacious, larger neighbours. Be they the USA, China or Russia. Crazy times.

A non sequitur? What do you think the last few weeks have been about? The US military no longer have to pretend to be defenders of freedom. They are free to be the economic stormtroopers they always were. But they'll still get clapped through airports and thanked for their service. The cult behaviour would be hilarious if it wasn't so dangerous.

but those checks & balances will not allow it!!!

Granted there's a handful of British troops left in Northern Ireland but that's to be expected for a NATO country with a significant military.

The 80-100k US troops are well spread across the continent and thankfully not in one group that would make defeating them difficult. Either way the threat to Ireland would come from the Atlantic. War Plan Red included an Emerald subsection for Ireland. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a variation in existence.

My reference to Ireland as a weak link goes back centuries and won't change as long as sovereign nations exist. The Russia Ukraine war won't last forever. Russia will likely recover like they always have. China attacking Taiwan has no relevance to Irelands current strategic position.

The parallels between the cult of chavez and Trump are tight, and no doubt there'll be a madura to continue on the maga madness to the point of autocracy.

Karoline Leavitt gave the official White House word to the media: use of the U.S Military [to take possession of Greenland] is NOT OFF THE BOOKS. Denmark and Greenland; forewarned is forearmed.

If the Admin were to go ahead with an invasion of Greenland, ignoring the cost of closed coffins coming home to families in the U.S on C5's from it's military invasion of a fellow NATO ally's national territory, they deserve to be ritually thrown out of office on to the street, not given the benefit of being sacked.

But sure at least they’ll get a nice shiny medal for killing some innocent people. Silver linings and all that

I can't see there being any meaningful resistance if Trump actually pulled the trigger on that

Europe need to take a leaf out of the Russian playbook and start playing dirty. I'm sure the intelligence agencies in the UK, France etc. have secrets about Mike Johnson, Lindsay Graham and other Republicans that they don't want exposed. It would be time to leverage that info. Get your rabid dog on a leash or suffer the consequences.

There are far more effective ways if an invaded country is prepared to use asymmetric warfare against an invading country. If the USA is not prepared to play by the rules why should an invaded country?

Whether targeted or indiscriminate attacks, the attacker needs to succeed only once, the defender needs to succeed every time, everywhere.

1930s all over again and Appeasement. Time for Europe to stand up to the Orange Pedo and tell him to fcuk right off.

the new leadership of Venezuela is ‘donating’ 50 to 60 million barrels of oil which will be sold by the US. How generous.
No doubt Trump will somehow personally become about $3bn more wealthy after it’s sold

When Americans grow a set of balls remove Trump through extreme pressure or violence. They can either do what's needed now or regret it later as their sons come home in body bags. Like Russia, America is choosing this path and its up to the populace to stand up and be counted. The US has never won a war without the support of it allies. How do they think they'll fair when they go toe to toe with those previous allies. It won't be a simple as carpet bombing goat herders was.

Trump dying will make little difference though, Vance, Miller, Vough, Musk are still there in the orbit, they have their hands on the throne, do you think theyll relinquish that just because the orange blob has expired? Also 70 million Americans voted for this, the others are too weak, scared, apathetic or silently approving of it. This is what Americans are now.

He has had a poor swing all his life, nowhere near tournament level. He’d love you as a playing partner. You’d believe his fantastic score.

Do Trump and his goons understand what they will facing in a few years’ time? China is already the workshop of the world and Xi won’t be happy until he is running the globe. To stop, or even delay, such a grim outcome America will need allies on every continent who can see that it is offering something better. Incredibly, Trump seems determined to convince the rest of us that his country is cut from the same cloth as China and Russia, with the same base motives.

Trump reverse iced a Venezuelan who dances worst than him and it probably cost 1 billion $.

US oil companies are not going to invest 10s of billions shareholders won't allow they will dump exon chevron stocks quicker than it will take militarily to secure if at all.

    Will Americans ever wake up.

    Release the files

Greenland occupies one of Dear Leader’s few remaining neurons. He doesn’t know why he needs it from a close ally but he wants it anyway and he doesn’t care about the mayhem such an outrageous move may bring to American credibility and global stability.
