From a NIMBY perspective I think we would need to be extremely lucky to get snow from that in the city and southwards. Yesterday evening was a better setup but still only wet snow and sleet.

cold damp wet morning,no frost , no ice, no sleet no snow, more standard misery resumes tomorrow, what was supposed to be a a very cold wintry week.

    The outlook: trash.

100% agree. For obvious resaons I do not expect authorities to grit my boreen and local roads nearby (in fact, they never did and I've no problem with that), however, last night was much worse, as even main roads near me looked very untreated. My observations from late last night (after midnight): N5 Mayo/Roscommon - solid white, compacted snow, definately not gritted. N17 Mayo/Sligo - black/white, slush, compacted snow, some black ice. Probably gritted, but long time before I was there. N4 (dual carriageway) Collooney-Sligo: no snow, just black ice on both lanes - gritted or not - unclear, but probably not recently.

On my way back this morning - N4: LHS lane black and wet, RHS lane white - one lane gritted, one not - better than nothing. N17 - exactly as it was at midnight - gritted? Doubt that. N5 - black/white, slush, black ice. And no gritter spotted on my way.

I'm well used to harsh road conditions, so it's generally not a problem, just stating facts.

So the new weather warning ( for Cork etc ) kicks in at 11am until tomorrow with temps at -3c.

I had a look at met dot ie site for where I am - Carrigaline, it seems this -3c from 11am on is the "feels like" ( to us ) temp while actual thermometer temp is 2c, 3c ..

What makes a difference then to say thawing? Which one is the truer temp? Why not just use one or the other?

actual temperature (in addition to sunlight) is what is relevant to thawing

Nice cooling of sea surface temperatures around the UK & Ireland in the past two weeks, especially in the North Sea and shallow waters as to be expected which are more vulnerable to sudden weather changes.

    unknown.jpg

Still above average however for the most part in our vicinity according to NOAA with one patch of cool anomalies just to the north of Scotland. Consistent low pressure in the North Atlantic coming out of Canada as some of the outlook shows should in theory upwell more cooler waters to the North Atlantic, not likely to do much for us though without very cold easterly winds.

Colder sea temps would make it easier for snow to fall on direct coastlines even with onshore breeze but a good bit away from that. A mid-month Scandi high and easterly winds would do good damage to these anomalies.

Fairly frosty in North Kildare this morning, sun shining and temperature at -2 still.

Sun is melting the frost where it touches. Beautiful day.

Donegal should of been upgraded to a orange warning through Sunday and Monday, some serious snow accumulations large parts of the county. Over 10cm in some places.

It does make a bit of a mockery of the system (yet again), we have orange and red warnings for uneventful blustery days yet an event that causes major disruption and shuts down large parts of the NW only gets a passing mention in the news and weather

Totally agree. I do wonder could they do elevation based warnings for the likes of Donegal in these situations.

The black ice situation was as bad as we've ever seen it in West Mayo this morning, seemed to get worse the further west you went which is surprising, I thought the north wind off the sea would keep temps moderated. Met had forecast temps of 5° for us this morning but still 0 at 10am. Its a far more disruptive situation than the typical storm in terms of numbers of people immobilised and the risk of accidents.

Not much around the south east, took a trek up Brandon Hill earlier (Kilkennys highest point). Mountain Leinster in the distance covered in cloud with the Blackstairs on the right. Beautiful sunshine.

Today is a great example of why I’m not interested in snow chances, roads and footpaths are lethal so it’s not possible to enjoy the nice weather to the same extent as the weekend. Cork.

Is this a real possibility or just a rogue chart?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,641 ✭✭✭.Donegal.

Closest official location with any recorded snowfall total for Donegal is Castlederg with 8cm but it largely avoided the heavy snow showers yesterday evening. It had 6cm day previous. Back to work this morning so I couldn’t measure but I’d estimate 10cm+ at my low altitude, got lucky with the showers yesterday.

Snow/Ice slow to thaw here despite the sun.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth house?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,493 ✭✭✭Rebelbrowser

Took a walk around my estate which is at 80m ASL in Cork suburbia. Loads of frozen slush and black ice as well as common or garden frost. 20 min walk took 40 mins, some spots lethal.
