sacked for calling out the DOF. what a mess. wilcox overstepping massively and will hurt our chances of appointing another manager

And his record as a manager was still better than Ruben Amorim which makes it all the more surprising that some people complain at others for being delighted at this decision.

Rangnick said this club needed open heart surgery, Amorim was the one doing it. Think we might need brain surgery now too.

If it was based on performance there was a 1/2 dozen other times he could have been justifiably fired. Waiting until 5 days into a transfer window reeks of just saving money in January. Dunno how anyone thinks THIS squad seeing out the remainder of the season is good.

so half the available people are ruled out by default.

And whoever replaces Amorim will still be a head coach not a manager. No coach will ever sit above the leadership team, or be given a recruitment veto like Erik ten Hag, as Manchester United's model is collaborative

Wilcox thinks he's playing Football Manager 26 with this carry-on. His leaks basically show that he wants to pick the team and tactics for each game.

"Well, yeah, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man"

Hallelujah, Ruben Amorim is gone. Can’t wait for the next manager to magically pull nine world-beaters out of his arse and stroll us back into the top 4. Problem solved.

I gotta be honest it will be hilarious to me personally if Fletcher starts 3atb on Wednesday night

Relegation or not, the club have basically binned the rest of this season.

"Well, yeah, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man"

    Complete and utter joke.

We were clearly heading in the right direction under him despite what some on here would tell you.

No point in even trying to dissect it further. Club is a mess.

I don't think it's good but if you are sitting as a club, already owing many millions in transfers for players already bought, then they might be right* to have a little patience this January. They could reasonably determine a better manager, with this squad could have beaten Wolves or West Ham or Everton or Bournemouth.

*Hard to give them any benefit of the doubt I know

This is it in a nutshell. He talked the talk but results and the football were shite. We need to get back to attacking entertaining football.

Anyone jumping for joy this morning needs to give their head a wobble. It's terrible news in the sense that it proves once again how badly United is run. The fact INEOS only acted in the aftermath of Amorim having a go at them in the press shows what they're all about.

Amorim did some sensible things off the pitch such as getting rid of the wasters but he had tested too many fans' patience and I certainly won't miss the ultra-defensive team selections, the 70-minute central defensive substitutions in every match and the bizarre decision to sideline Mainoo, who is an absolute star in the making.

I'd love to see Emery get the job in summer but with Villa flying high he might not be easily persuaded. Maybe he'll have taken Villa as far as he can get them by then.

But whoever comes in, remember it's the INEOS clowns, and the Glazers, who are the real problem here.

Amorims record is more than his united career, Neville could get back into management for another 20 years and never win anything close to what he has in trophies or win percentage if we are being honest

Maresca favourite with most bookies Is this just bettors putting two and two together and getting

Any good reason to think he would be a better fit at United than Chelsea?

I said after Wolves that I’d been on Amorim’s side but he wasn’t it after that match, but I’m so fkn despondent now. Over the last decade I’ve thought United are fukd but this really feels like a new low. Why? Because since he came in, there were small signs that the culture was getting better and there were times where we played good football. Not enough of it but at least there was hope. That’s gone now.

Ultimately it was too big a job for him and I’m glad for his sake he’s moved on - he looked under serious pressure from the start and just couldn’t get his vision implemented. In hindsight he should have stuck to his guns and either joined at the beginning of this season or not at all. Berada didn’t do him any favours by forcing him to join last season. It was a **** show when he came in and the win ratio since has been used as a stick to beat him with. He would have had a better chance with more of a clean slate.

Once there were briefings that the leadership were questioning his system in the background (and using Gary fuckn Neville’s analysis as proof) his time was over - he knew it and the press conference was him saying he was done).

Yep! Can picture Wilcox leaning over the lad typing it out… “no, no, that needs to say head coach!”

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 18,898 Mod ✭✭✭✭DM_7

How much of the positive direction can be credited to Amorim alone though?

As questionable the clubs leadership have been they have obviously played a major part in the changes like moving on players and trying to reinvigorate the squad and team. They have not gone far enough, or at the needed pace, but there is no doubt these positive things would not be happening if they didn't want them to.

Don't forget the Glazers. They are the ones taking heart out of the club.

The club is going down like somebody in quick sand.

There are many reasons why RA could / should have been sacked but the main one is the results. I said in here a few months ago that I refuse to believe the squad we have are playing to their highest levels and i didn't believe results were a reflection of theo level.

Is it a good enough squad to win a league or a big trophy? Absolutely not. Is it a good enough squad to get top 4 / 5? It absolutely is. Look at villa for example. A well drilled squad of decent / good players. Ultimately the manager is responsible for getting the best out of what he has to work with and the reality is that RA utterly failed at that.

When we hit the dizzying hits of winning 3 in a row (Christ, we used to celebrate trebles rather than winning 3 games in a row), Wilcox couldn't get enough of the camera.

He did a few interviews that week, he's a fcuking spoofer imo. This was just one of them, he was the first guest on a new Vlog a few days later after the Forest game… I remember mentioning that interview at the time, it should have been an early warning sign that he sees himself as having a big say in the on field stuff, he was citing the players lack of intensity in that interview.

He should be out the door with Amorim imo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,171 ✭✭✭Caustic

Amorim calling them out about Gary Neville is kinda hilarious makes them look even worse now especially after all the leaks, hopefully Wilcox gets the sack now too as he deserves it by creating this entire mess

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 18,898 Mod ✭✭✭✭DM_7

Good point on Glazers, they are the root of all the problems.

Saw a stat the other day that since SAF, after 19 games, United have only been better than 6th on 4 occasions in 13 seasons.

This is the issue for me. Wilcox wants a yes man who won't push back and that raises huge flags for me. While a good DOF needs to have a vision for the club and everything from scouting, coaching and tactics obviously flows from that, he also needs to have a staff that are not afraid to challenge him - it makes the process more robust if it can take a good kicking and makes the Director better if he's able to defend it. Wilcox has made the mistake of sacking two managers at the wrong time and costing us now two seasons of development. It wouldn't surprise me to see the likes of McKenna appointed but it certainly won't be an elite European manager.

I'm not as hard on Amorim as most, as I think we can all see the good he's done but his position has been untenable since the EL final and the hammering we took at Grimsby. The lack of midfield depth is not a problem of his making in fairness but his tactical inflexibility, game management and subsequent poor results is all on him.

Pretty mixed feelings about the whole situation. In one way he can't have many complaints, his record was poor and results over the last month and haven't helped. But I don't know, I kind of liked him even for his faults. The authority he tried to put on the squad by bombing out the likes of Sancho, Rashford, etc.. was badly needed and even though results haven't gone his way this season there was a sense that they were playing a lot better but consistency hasn't been good! In the end it's not result's but a falling out with Wilcox/Berrada which seems to have done for him. Who they go with next is the big question, waiting until the end of the season seems to be the wise move but getting the right interim manager is just as important. To get the quality of players we need, we have to be playing in Eurpope next season so getting an interim who will push us into these places is vital. I don't think going with Fletcher will be a good idea, it would put him and his sons in an awkward position.

    Mainoo fit for Wednesday?

Feel like I've watched a different United side for 15 months if people think we were clearly going in the right direction.

15 wins, 15 months. Won back to back games once. 15 consecutive away games without a clean sheet. 36% win record, our worst by 20% since SAF retired. 4th lowest points out of all PL sides since his appointment. Lead us to 15th in the league, banked everything on the EL final where we limped to a defeat against Spurs of all sides. Knocked out of the Carabao by a league 2 side who ran rings around us. Lost at home to a 10 man Everton. Set standards so low anything above 15th this season is now seen as a positive. Any progress is down to better attackers and a keeper who doesn't dodge the ball. Guy was an absolute calamity. Should've been sacked ages ago.

Didn't they do the exact same thing last season?

How so? I was. Big Amorim supporter but the results haven't been good enough. We are 6th due to it being a poor league this season. By right we should be 3rd or 4th but his inability to see out games has squandered points. We couldn't even manage back to back wins. As a character I liked him and he did great work to sort the dressing room but ultimately the job was too big for him. Not forgetting he tried to quit more than once
