It will be the same mealy mouthed statements we have come to expect from EU leaders, consistent with statements throughout the war in Ukraine.

Trump slurring his way through nonsense about Venezhwailer. What a spectacle. Now he’s talking about Monroe’s doctrines (plural) and the Donroe Doctrine. Despite the confused delivery I think we get the drift.

Did Mr Trump not spend the last few months warning Venezuela of impending action if things there didn’t change?

Re EU response to this event. Does this explain things a bit?

    https://twitter.com/DanMulhall/status/2007536923024470476

There is no doubt that this move by the US creates a difficult dilemma for the EU. Yes, they had the option of outright condemnation, but it would have been difficult to get buy-in from member States for that. The danger is that condemnation would have sundered EU-US ties with potentially dire consequences for the war in Ukraine which takes priority for the EU over the fate of Venezuela.

Is this an interesting point? Anyone know more about this?

    Yes, because they’re boot-licking vassals!!

They’re not going to go against the capitalist Masters of the Universe- especially wrt the renewed, revitalised Monroe Doctrine in the boss's backyard.
Big Daddy might pull out 20,000 - 50,000 MNC jobs here otherwise, as a wrist slap.

Wouldn’t it be amazing to have sovereignty though!

I haven't fired a shot in anger since 1996 when I was 16 and in the FCA, but I'm ready to serve my country and reclaim Rockall for the great Rebublic. 🫡

Except that pulling this off shows the US at its absolute peak militarily. Xi can't be happy about that. The US is flexing military muscle exactly the same as Israel did in the ME. In that respect there could be some truth to Netanyahu having had a word in Trump's ear over it. That they just switched off the electricity supply to Caracas (remotely) before the attack is testament to it. If the US (even under a future regime) remains committed to defending Taiwan, that's not a good situation for Xi imo.

I dont think China is going to attempt to invade Taiwan in this generation- America under Trump has been way more unpredictable than China have ever been. America have always had the military might to engineer regime change, they just suck at managing the events after.

I see it as a sign of a superpower in retreat to its own hemisphere, focusing on bullying neighbours rather than protecting the rules-based global order it did so much to establish. That’s very good news for Xi.

Remember the film called The Revolution will not be televised. About capture of Chavez.?

It's possible that it's not over yet but I don't think it will turn out that this lad will be back in power.

I doubt we have forgotten Trump's "genius"reaction to Russia's invasion of Ukraine

It irks him that Ukraine did not roll over.Maybe Venezuela will likewise not be rolled over when they see the Trump cure is just as bad as the Maduro illness.

Must be excruciating to be a decent American citizen being led by these donkeys.

American citizens get what they deserve.

And if you think some don't deserve it because they didnt vote for him, then those do deserve it for not fighting hard enough to prevent him being elected, especially the second time.

America should have been paralysed by protest and resistance in 2024, and it wasn't.

What use is a 'No Kings' protest when the fat f**ker has already been on the throne for 6 or 7 months.

    Greenland next.

This is why EU needs maximum independence.

3 powers now in the world. US EU and China.

US and China are established. Neither want the EU around complicating things. Only US can actually do anything about it. And recently they are showing their intentions. To undermine EU before it becomes too powerful.

Completely agree, Starmer is a vile creature, his time is limited too.

Agree too about North Korea or why not that bastion of democracy and human rights, Saudi Arabia!!

There's an element of truth to that in terms of what the MAGA base expect (in truth they weren't expecting this). Trump acts based on what the people talking to him are saying. The oil thing with Venezuela was significant as was the voice of disaffected Venezualans and other Hispanics like Marco Rubio (who couldn't have kissed Trump's ass in gratitude more at the press conference today).

It will be pointed out to Trump that defending Taiwan is much more in America's interests than Venezuela, if he doesn't already understand it imo. At the very least, Trump is unpredictable. That he is actually using the enormous military power at his elbow, has to be a matter of concern for Xi rather than good news in my opinion. Though I agree, the pretense of a rules based global order is dead.

Hegseth: “President Trump is deadly serious about…re-establishing American deterrence and dominance in the western hemisphere.” The Americas First, aka Donroe, doctrine is being spelled out here. Of course, it’s music to Rubio’s enormous ears. Many of the Cuban émigrés and their kin still dream of the good old days.

While this my embolden China wrt Taiwan, there is two major factors to consider

    1. AI is the new arms race and Taiwan is key in terms of advanced chips for AI.
    2. An invasion of Taiwan is really difficult for lots of reasons including difficult sea conditions for most of the year, Taiwan coastal terrain and scarcity of landing zones.

While China has being using Russia to study and test drone warfare as a defender I've no doubt Taiwan has being learning valuable lessons to. Appropriate use of modern drones would make an invasion really really risky.

Given China's dependency on oil imports to run it's economy locking up the seas for months or years around Taiwan isn't something China wants to risk i would think.

Dropping in and stealing prime minister would be child's play in comparison

At the end of the day this was an arrest warrant served, had it been a nobody on the street they picked up there, it would be no news.

One US grocery item is increasingly available and affordable these days:

Sources familiar with the operations of CJNG told The Wall Street Journal that record amounts of cocaine are currently being produced in Colombia, driving the volume in the U.S. up and the price down.

Morgan Godvin, a researcher with the community organization Drug Checking Los Angeles, told the outlet that pure cocaine prices have “plummeted” to an average of $60 to $75 a gram, a decrease of around half compared with five years ago.

Given that Venezuela is a relatively minor component of that supply chain, the situation looks set to continue.

Watching footage of Maduro being humiliated, led blindfolded down the steps of the plane, barefoot, recorded on camera by numerous US officials. As it's being shown all around the world, live on TV, shot by drones. You don't think they could have done this privately and quietly?

Don't get me wrong. Maduro needed to be ousted, but it wasn't done legally, nor was it the place of America acting rogue.

And despite what Trump says(as if he's fooling anyone, even his supporters if they're honest with themselves), it's to benefit America financially by plundering Venezuela's vast oil reserves.

I don’t lament Maduro’s overthrow but this is a huge gamble by the US. The noises out of the administration so far are not encouraging.
