    Do you mean Machado who asked Trump to kill Maduro? How did Machado do in the 2024 elections?

    Maybe Machado can make Venezuela a member of NATO, after all Israel is in Eurovision?

    @Infini said:

    "On A Serious note Maduro lost the last election, refused to leave, oppressed the opposition and Venezuelans escaped to claim Asylum in America. Even the opposition was asking for him to be removed by force even though the whole thing is a circus atm. Probably was the only way of getting rid of him but the current admin are like a bull in a China shop, they're going to make a mess of the whole thing as usual."

    Didnt Trump try that on Jan 6th 2021 via the United States Capitol attack??

    AND isnt Trump making noises re an illegal third term, staying in power after 2028?

    The exact same thing as Maduro really? Trumps regime as is the case with Putin etc is covered with blatent hypocrisy pretty much daily.

    Putin Russia condemn US attack on Venezuela as armed aggression violating sovereignty. Pot Kettle Black. More hypocrisy while putin and co do the same to Ukraine

    I think the US would retain influence over western Europe in this case, as well, since the US is already so ensconced in that region since WW2. Russia may eventually get to enjoy a better relationship with these countries but not have any real dominion over them. Eerily, the zones of influence I'd see as being very close to those of 1984, i.e. Oceania, Eurasia and East Asia, except the real Oceania would also include all that west of the old iron curtain.

    Evidence of ties between the Putin and Maduro regimes is that Russia has filed a diplomatic request asking the US to stop pursuing an oil tanker originally bound for Venezuela.

    Because Russia have now flagged that ship as registered as a Russian ship apparently. The crew have drawn a basic Russian Flag on the side of it ..

    That is fairly unlikely to happen unfortunately

    My only hope is this will spoil the Putin Trump bromance. But as previously posters have said maybe the Washington-Moscow-Beijing axis of evil is in the process of setting out it's spheres of influence.

    Lots of discussion on the news programs about the Monroe Doctrine:

    The Monroe Doctrine, proclaimed by U.S. President James Monroe in 1823, was a foundational U.S. foreign policy stating the Americas were closed to further European colonization and intervention, warning Europe against interference in the Western Hemisphere while the U.S. pledged neutrality in European affairs. It established the U.S. as the dominant power in the Americas, asserting separate spheres of influence and later evolving through additions like the Roosevelt Corollary to justify U.S. intervention in Latin America to maintain stability.

    Monroe made four basic points ( https://kids.britannica.com/kids/article/Monroe-Doctrine/628231 ):

    (1) the United States would not interfere in European affairs;
    (2) the United States recognized and would not interfere with existing colonies in the Americas;
    (3) the Western Hemisphere was closed to future colonization; and
    (4) if a European power tried to interfere with any nation in the Americas, that would be viewed as a hostile act against the United States.

    And right up to today - the new Monroe doctrine: Trump’s forceful approach to the western hemisphere:

    Yes the possible end of the bromance was my first thought this morning, though frankly I'm not convinced Putin is really all that invested in Maduro.

    Trump thinks of Putin as his equal and would've preferred Putin take out Zelensky like he did Maduro. I dont think anything will threaten Putins and Trump's friendship.

    Trump won't have a leg to stand on if Xi pushes ahead with the peaceful return of Chinese Taipei.

    The idea that Trump simply wants to set up a system that acts in the best interests of the common Venezuelan is utter delusion.

    Trump doesnt care about being a hypocrite, and he is not the only American leader on the past to act like this. I dont think China would risk invading Taiwan, as it would be against America's interst and Trump would react.

    Well now - I will paraphrase - "We are going to run the country, until a good transition can take place"

    This is Iraq again isnt it? No lessons learned?

    Yes . If Trump was worried about being perceived as a hypocrite he wouldn't have pardoned a convicted drug dealer a few weeks back knowing he was going to go ahead with this kidnapping . The major difference between Donnie and other US leaders in this scenario is he has no filter- he says the quiet part out loud

    There are one or two minor differences…

    The US held pretty free and fair elections, Venezuela, according to the UN observers, did not. The process worked, and Biden officially declared the winner. Maduro’s government followed Maduro’s wishes.

    The other is that Trump actually left. He may not have been happy about it, but to my knowledge, he did not refuse to leave and nobody was forced to physically bundle him into a car/helicopter to change the occupant of the White House.

    Whichever “side” one is on as regards this Venezuala thing, there is something of a mutually exclusive moral proposition. Saying “this is against the rules” is entirely accurate, and for those of us who like to follow rules, is a bad thing. But it is also true to say that the rules, as enforced, permit a dictator to remain in charge over his people as long as he is sufficiently tyrannical and ruthless to prohibit those people from acting against him, because there is no likelihood out outside interference. It’s not as if the UN Security Council was ever going to give its blessing for the removal of Maduro which means, that despite the reports of the UNs own bodies, the UN was never going to do anything. UN lawyers are happy. How about the Venezuelans?

    Most of us don’t want countries going around invading other countries on a whim, but most of us also don’t want dictators oppressing their countries for personal gain. Which of the two does one like the least? Not everyone is going to have the same answer.

    Starting to understand why they changed the name to department of war now ? I reckon Columbia will be next in line for a bit of democracy. Trumps fu**ing nuts isn't he :)
