A very similar offer from Hyundai back the guts of a decade ago got me buying their Ioniq 28kWh brand new and "trading in" - scrapping - my end of life banger. Kept the car 3 years and had just €5k depreciation on it. That brand new car had a lower total cost of ownership than a free petrol / diesel banger. Free tolls, free fuel, free maintenance. Just depreciation and insurance really.

Friend purchasing a M3 in January on PCP scrapping an old car. Rang up and now switched to cash, saving 3.5k or roughly 10% what he was prepared to pay.

Lovely spot on this thread as I tipped him after reading it. Amazing value at 34k brand new!.

Another person I know taking delivery of a 60k (non tesla) 2k equity and monthly for nearly 1,000 for 24 months then a massive balloon at the end. That PCP has allowed people on average salaries to drive overpriced cars. The person even said 7 years ago before he started PCP he would never had spent that type of money but now he feels that following it over each year is just easier as the balloon payment doesn't feel real.

My own 20 year old car is getting NCT next weekend. If it fails I'll scrap the car and buy the cheapest eletric I can find.

Sweet and thanks for sharing! Agree with you that PCP turns you into a modern day slave. No thanks. If I can't afford to buy a car for cash, I will simply buy a cheaper one that I can afford.

Those Ioniq 28’s were great value new at the time, good 8-9 year old ones are still making €10K

dear fellow boardsies, as some of you would remember, I’m a very long time lurker here. Now it is time for me to buy an EV. I’m talking to one Model y owner. The car has around 50K kms, long range model. I’m looking to finish it around 26K€. Do you think it is a bargain?

Before I buy it, should I go with pre purchase car inspections? As far as I see online they cost around 150-200€.

should I buy motorcheck or cartell?

The new ones just dropped in price today. Tesla prices are very dynamic, hard to tell what way they will go.

What year is the one you're looking at, thats the only way anyine will know if uts a bargain or not.

Yes if buying private do a finance check anyway

Tell us the year and give us more info if you want opinions.

Do a cartell check if moving toward buying.

Pre-purchase inspection may be worth while for peace of mind if you have any concerns and if any undeclared/unknown issues are likely to result in a discount. If car is under warranty, less of a concern.

I’m sorry I forgot to mention this is a 2022 model

Maybe move the question into its own thread so we don't clutter here. I didn't see this was the bargains thread. 2022 LR models with similar mileage are asking around €30k, so pricing appears good. but keep in mind the prices have dropped with trade-in offer today.

This meaningless trade in booster will not affect used values at all. Tesla trade in valuations will continue to be diabolical with or without another imaginary 3.5k lumped on top.

@dr.dundrum has been talking about getting an EV for about 3 years now so let's not convince him that €26k for a Model Y isn't a good deal

How bad are tesla trade in offers?

€3.5k boost in Tesla's trade ins are no advantage at all giving how low ballers they are.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,763 ✭✭✭✭unkel

It is if you have an end of life banger. It's effectively a scrappage scheme. €3500 for a worthless car.

No harm to try get a trade in value for any other car, but Tesla just dump second hand cars into the trade and you're only getting whatever Tesla are getting from the trade for your car. So in almost all cases, it is way less than private sale value

I’ve had 2 good trade in offers from them. Better than Joe Duffy group. MSP and MyLR.

I also got a trade price last week for a 2022 M3 LR with 170k on the clock at €17k. Add on this 3.5 trade in booster and I’m up at where I have it priced privately. So may now make more sense to trade in.

They are perceived as really bad but in my experience they are in or around the average trade in price across the board. Just look at the posts giving out about trade in price on the other brands. Including VW who usually massage the figures to keep you within the brand.

Agreed. A trade price is exactly that, a TRADE price. It's useless to compare it to a private sale. That BMW 535i sale was a good figure, in fact so good I'd have to look twice there - but assuming there's no porkies being told, a 12yr old undesirable large patrol saloon was probably worth about 5k to a flipper who'd tidy it up and put it out there for 10k, being prepared to take 8k.

It's easy to spot the folks that have never had a Tesla trade in valuation as they are fixated on the "rotten number", and fail to understand the lived experience of Tesla valuations (from the trade) fluctuating up and down regularly. I have had had some stinkers, but also some extremely competitive offers at the same time. It all depends on who responds to the invitation from Tesla.

I am not convinced you actually need to trade in a car to availa of this.

I spoke to them on the phone also and that wasn’t the impression I got. Hence. I am not convinced they know themselves how they are applying it (or I took it up wrong). I am sure we will know in the coming days.

That's why I hate buying ~10 year old turbo cars as the turbo if not replaced is usually on the way out or needs replacing especially if the car has the average mileage for a car that age. Worse again if it has above average mileage.

edit: Just realised what thread I'm in. OT post. But I suppose more reason to buy electric. 😉

that 35i engine was a stunning engine from BMW and very tuneable. But not the kind of car that would attract much interest from the general trade.

You’d need to be pitching that to the likes of Mad Nadia, Big Al in Lewis Motors etc :)

Here I was thinking there were soome big EV deals going on.

So tesla has the usual scrappage scheme, grab a €500 euro banger with NCT and you get 3k of a new Tesla.

Must say there was a fair few Konas and eNiros going for great money even if higher mileage but they all seem to have shifted. This one seems good value if can get it down closer to 10k:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,190 ✭✭✭joe1303l

You’ll do well to find a €500 car with an NCT ?? Kona looks decent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 10,642 ✭✭✭✭893bet

I got onto them again and you are correct. A trade is needed.

    So pointless.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,717 ✭✭✭✭User1998

Who would have thought a Trade In Bonus requires a trade in😅

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 10,642 ✭✭✭✭893bet

Not in the criteria though. Usually lists stuff like “car needs valid NCT and Tax” for example which is not listed.

Pointless given Tesla don’t actually want trade ends as extra work to manage.
