Your silly rants about EVs have been scientifically dis-proven many many times but I guess we live in a country of religious freedom so feel free to keep believing what you want. You might do everybody a favour and keep your faith private though

Hydrogen is non-viable no matter how much you pray for it to be. The stations are closing and BMW and Toyota are scrapping their plans

So has anyone been using Hvo long term?

I've been using it almost exclusively for the past 2 ½yrs. Only using regular diesel when abroad.

So far, no negatives, dpf is at 300k, ash content is 40g, never been cleaned. No egr problems, exhaust is sparkling clean

The only downside is that my dci card doesn't do Hvo

    Thoughts , opinions.

I've been running it for 30,000km on a '09 euro 4 diesel (no DPF) with 320,000km on the clock. My last NCT showed smoke levels comparable to a Euro 6 engine (0.070/m). The engine runs smoother and quieter with no diesel knock on cold starts. I'm happy.

    1.6tdi 315km

Started using it exclusively (bit of an effort to get to garage with it) since dpf

ash content is 72% and I'm hoping to avoid having to do a full clean/replacement.

So far find it runs smoother

Apparently circle k will be pricing their MilesBio Hvo100 the same as regular diesel all of next week 29th to 5th.

Here's a link to the circle k sites selling Hvo for the price of diesel this week

I was in the inver Kilkenny off the Castlecomer road last week and saw HVo100 for same price as diesel.

Why does Junction 5 M9, Rathcrogue Carlow not have it at the car pumps ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 330 ✭✭Birka

They've treated it very much as a truck fuel rather than a car fuel - no idea why but its been a trend to some extent in Ireland where suppliers have focussed HVO promotion mostly on fleet customers. The link @mikeecho has posted is interesting in that its not tucked away in their fleet section so maybe that's changing for Circle K.

The Rathcrogue pumps are car-sized even if they're in the truck section whereas the Kill North pumps aren't available to cars without an adapter. It's possible to buy a cheap plastic converter that allows car owners to use truck-specific pumps (very popular with German HVO users) but I haven't found an Irish source for them yet.

Edit - just noticed that under the heading 'Why Make The Switch' in the Circle K link, point 3 mentions fleet:

Performance: HVO offers similar or even improved performance compared to traditional diesel, ensuring that your fleet maintains its efficiency and reliability.

I was dying to try the Outlander Diesel with the HVO. What I love about it is that it's a drop in replacement with no mod needed for any diesel old or new.

Rathcrogue is handy enough and quiet in terms of trucks. There's no downside to HVO other than price and Circle K (and Inver) seem to have sorted that for the moment. It could be argued that the higher cetane rating and lower soot would be worth a few cent but price matching makes it even more compelling.

It's a pity the other CircleK garages in Carlow Town don't have it, Rathcrogue is a 10 Km drive from here.

So. Today i was running low, and have some driving to do tomorrow morning, so I filled up with standard circle k diesel.

The car has been running almost exclusively on hvo for the past 2½yrs.

The last time it had regular diesel was in June when I was abroad.

Within 5 min of filling up, I noticed that the engine was a bit louder, and not as smooth, now it wasn't running poorly, it's fine, but not a fine as it was on hvo.

It's like going from cassettes to cds, and not noticing the difference, until you switch back after a few weeks.

So I treated my car to its very first fill of HVO two weeks ago and its 2nd full fill a few days back.

It maybe just chance but my usage has gone from a steady 5lt to 4.6/100KM now in only two weeks… Didn't think that was a thing. Deffo feels smother to drive and lower smoke on harder foot drops.

Does anyone know/have a list of forecourts selling it as its hard to find.. no one in Wicklow seams to be from what I see..

    Thanks!

There is information about outlets selling it on the main suppliers webpages, but you will need to do your own personal list to see which ones are best located to your usual driving journey.

Myself I have most often filled up an hours drive from home as the station there is beside my clients office.

Personally did not see such a large change in fuel burning rate.

    Thanks for the reply.

There is always the chance I was being extra carful while driving… Its an auto Diesel if that makes any odds.

… will be keeping an eye on it but it was the first time in a long time that it dropped to below 5lt for no reason…

Power feels the same and smoke is less on cold startup for sure. Mostly motorway driving up to NI and don to Wicklow over the last two weeks

Update: found this for finding sites that have it for sale:

    https://www.sustainabletourismnetwork.ie/hvo-map-ireland/

Also they do NOT have any of the Certa sites listed however… And the one listed in Coynes Cross doesn't seem to have any as I was only there last week looking for it… unless its at the "truck pimps"

    Does HVO lubricate like diesel

    Ai says no no no

CP4 pump needs its lube , can HVO be used in a CP4 pump

Retail HVO has additives to meet EN15940. When it meets that standard, it's lubricity is as good if not better than B7.

I filled the tank of the Megane (euro 4, no DPF, over 600k kms) with HVO before the NCT. With residual diesel, tank would have been about 80% HVO. Used about half of that tank before the NCT. Never used HVO for any previous NCT.

    2026 smoke test result: 0.07

    2025: 1.34

    2024: 0.3

    2023: 0.03

    2022:0.25

    2021: 0.47

    2017: 0.75

    2015: 1.1

other years - can't find reports

based on this and taking account of the inconsistency of NCT results and the low result for 2023 on normal diesel, I'd say it's worthwhile doing the NCT on HVO.

Found the HVO pump at The Apple Green in Coynes Cross, Wicklow today.

it's at the back of the site (at Truck stop part, big honking tank of it) You pre-pay there. BUT @1.86 per/LTR …(regular D is 1.76)

…out of the few places I've been to so far, Certa have been only a few cent over Diesel price.

But..At least its available somewhere in Co Wicklow now.

People can disagree with me if they want, I don't mind, bit I find hvo100 a far superior fuel.

Yes it costs a little bit more

Yes you might or might not get better fuel economy.

But it's gives no or very little soot, which is great for your dpf

It has a very high cetane number.

    Great cold starts

    Less engine noise

And 10yr shelf life, compared to 6months to 1yr to B7 diesel

HVO100 might just the solution to people who drive diesel for short journeys., or for those with older vehicles that want to extend the life of their dpf.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,925 ✭✭✭Damien360

That makes a lot of sense for the dpf but be careful just using it was any engine. For the VW group, they only approve those engines after mid 2021. There are documented cases of injectors blocking and because they used HVO, that was blamed. It's an easy target as it's a change and it may not be true but HVO does not have the same lubrication ability of diesel. So it was the smoking gun.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 330 ✭✭Birka

VAG are retrospectively approving engines - now back to 2015 Euro 6. Approval is usually about adherence to declared emissions rather than mechanical suitability as HVO can increase NOx in some engines - depends on the injector spray pattern, sequence and timing. I can only find a German article but its an official doc.

I've provided info a few times in this thread about EN15940 HVO lubricity vs EN590 - there are no issues and I'm not sure why it keeps coming up

If the HVO is manufactured from cleared forestry land then it is not so wonderful, is it?

    https://www.irishtimes.com/environment/climate-crisis/2025/08/07/hvo-is-a-climate-quick-fix-that-could-be-worse-than-fossil-fuels/

So, where does our imported HVO actually come from? According to data from Ireland’s National Oil Reserve Agency (Nora), about half of the transport biofuel entering our market in 2024 came from UCO and POME, which are mostly imported from Malaysia, Indonesia and China, regions plagued by deforestation as a result of expanding palm oil production.

Suspicion is mounting internationally about rampant fraud in these supply chains. Given lax auditing and strong financial incentives, it’s disturbingly easy and attractive to pass off virgin palm oil as a waste product.

The implications for the climate are dire. Many studies have shown how biodiesel from virgin vegetable oils cause similar greenhouse gas emissions as diesel, and in some cases, are much worse. According to one study, emissions from palm oil biodiesel are three times greater than those from fossil diesel, because of its association with tropical rainforest deforestation. Substituting fossil fuels with palm oil-derived HVO isn’t just unhelpful, it’s blatantly harmful and irresponsible.

Yeah but I'm taking about engine health.

Tell your mechanic about the rain Forrest in South East asia when you've a dpf problem.
