Also let's not forget that we already have a tall CB in Leoni. I believe he's 6ft 5.

Agreed - we need a CB in January and another in the summer to replace Gomez. Plus a tall, strong, dominant DM in the summer.

Liverpool conceded a total of 9 goals last season from set pieces, as of late December 2025, they have already conceded 12 goals from set-play situations—the highest in the league.

It is worth noting the league has changed, setpieces are a big part of most teams attack now, whereas a year or 2 ago it wasn't. We haven't adapted, which is what you are seeing here I'd say - what % of setpieces goals has changed overall I wonder?

Leoni…i saw 45 minutes of him and he looks good, but he's a kid, and anything we got out of him this season was a bonus IMHO, we should not have been banking on him as a starter, and that was before his injury. What we get from him NEXT season is now a bonus.

We have 2 fully functioning CBs at present.

We have 1 fully functioning CB. And a Konate. I've no idea how to describe him but it's not fully functioning anyway.

I agree I guess, but to be fair he had a good season last year so I can allow for them planning on him being OK this season too. Gomez and Leoni could not be relied on IMHO, and unfortunately that's how it worked out.

does Guehi have the same options to pass to as Ibra, probably not so that is likely affecting his stats. Palace would be under more pressure consistently throughout the game and then likely making more less optimal passes. This is the thing with these stats, they are quantitative and often ignore the qualitative side.
what I did note was the Guehi made more forward passes.

I haven't see much of Palace TBH, but all I'm doing is warning not to believe any stats that would suggest Ibra is a good passer or good on the ball, , when the eye test clearly tells you he's not.

What I've seen of palace though it's that they tend to pass more vertical or direct than Liverpool.

    Joyce saying Briggs is gone

Who's he, the set piece coach?

No harm, they need to sort it ASAP

Is a club statement necessary for this?

I hope they have someone lined up with a proven track record! €15 million bid on the way for Nicolas Jover?

An inanimate carbon rod would be better as a set piece coach. Bring back Johnny Heitinga (never thought I'd be saying that)

Small bit harsh on Briggs as he wasn't hired as a set piece coach, but was given that role. Performed badly in that role so he had to go really.

Think they needed to make a change. It may be symbolic but the players and fans needed to see something change. If they go a couple of games without conceding from a set piece, hopefully confidence will come back in this area.

How many of our goals conceded this season have been directly from set pieces? Not too many AFAIK. Mostly, its when when the ball breaks from a clearance or knock on. That falls into the basic defending bucket imo.

It's a bit of a PR stunt sacking Briggs but something had to done I suppose, or seen to be done.

This is the first assistant manager Sipke Hulshoff is a highly experienced Dutch coach who has become Arne Slot’s most trusted lieutenant. Their partnership is the foundation of Liverpool’s current tactical identity, as they have worked together across three different clubs over the last decade.

Here is a breakdown of his coaching journey and why he is so central to the Liverpool setup:

    1. The Partnership with Arne Slot

Hulshoff and Slot first crossed paths in 2016 at SC Cambuur. When the head coach was fired mid-season, the duo took over as "interim co-managers" and achieved such impressive results that they were given the jobs permanently.

    • The "Slot-Hulshoff" Dynamics: While Slot is the public-facing manager and chief strategist, Hulshoff is known as the "field coach." He is responsible for translating Slot’s complex tactical theories into the high-intensity training sessions you see at the AXA Training Centre

We've conceded 12 from set pieces. Every time we give away a needless corner, we seem to leak one in. Not sure what games you've been watching but we're rubbish at them.

Read my post again. I remember very few direct headers /shots from a set piece. I remember plenty of knock-ons and second balls. A lot of basic defending.

Are we saying that the set is piece coach is at fault for basic defending mistakes now? Passing the buck..

Hey, maybe we'll all of a sudden see a huge improvement in those types of goals conceded. Hopefully. If not, maybe the actual culprits will own up!

I assume he has responsibility for the second and third phases of defensive set pieces. But I agree, that should really be the remit of the players.

He wasn't setting the world on fire offensively so there's that too.

Slot has spoken so often about the issues around set pieces this season, he made his position untenable. I'm never quite sure if this is just his Dutch manner or it's deliberate.

For the record, I'm not defending the guy, just pointing it out. He seems a convenient scapegoat. For me it's Slot and the players that should be taking the vast majority of the blame.

    Absolutely.

They never react first to second balls from corners. As you've said, the don't usually concede directly. It's a little like the lackadaisical starts to the second half. Is that Slots fault or the players responsibility? Probably a bit of both.

A big part of opponent's planned set pieces is based around the second ball and breakdown too though… that whole phase until the ball is actually under someone's control is all the remit of the set piece guy. so I wouldn't absolve him much of most of the ones we've conceded, and the myriad other times where we've looked in a panic and just about about gotten by. We always seem utterly reactive, while the opponent's always look like they're moving to second balls with intent and expectation.

As we're all discussing our shortcomings, Arsenal score from yet another set piece

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,821 ✭✭✭✭TitianGerm

Massive mistake from the keeper more than good play from a set piece.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,386 ✭✭✭IrishOwl...

Yes it definitely falls into a grey area. No one but the individuals should be taken blame for some of the goals Liverpool have conceded from set pieces this season. Some absolute shambolic defending on show.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 2,312 ✭✭✭Appletart Upsetter

Looking at Arsenal, you can see the importance of set pieces these days. Second best in the first half but score from their first corner and the whole game changes. We've had the opposite situation occuring to us all season.

First of all we've got to defend them properly. From an attacking stand point, what Arsenal do really well is their delivery is the best in the league. Then it's about aggression and desire in the box (same as defending). I don't think it's that complicated.

feels like a big win for arsenal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,014 ✭✭✭Dr Robert

More like a big loss for Villa imo. It'll be an Arsenal and City race to the end.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,310 ✭✭✭dogbert27

It's also how the players are set up to defend the corners which is on the set piece coach.

Gravenberch's position heading the ball back down in to the six yard box for Sarr to score against Crystal Palace and it happened again against another team I can't remember with someone else.

I can't remember the last time one of the goalkeepers actually came out and claimed a corner ball. Was this something to do with the set piece coaching tactics?

Leeds last minute equaliser with no one picking up the player at the back because they were in their "coached" positions.

We have been abysmal all season at set pieces and I have no sympathy for Briggs as he was hired as a player development coach who talked his way in to the job of set piece coach.

Conceding from set pieces has actually killed our season
