I doubt revenue would be interested in teachers giving a few grinds. They are providing a service at least not selling cheap cigs they brought home from Spain.

Probably tax evasion. very easy to do it, fill out an online form.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,610 ✭✭✭mulbot

But there's s nothing to suggest tax evasion.

Wrong. First of all you don't have access to the facts since you have no idea the content of their tax returns, so impressions not facts. And second since you felt the need to specifiy that the small business were Asian, yes that is racist.

Always say this whenever this topic comes up.

The loser is the merchant, the money you have saved vs lost is something these greedy individuals can't see. And it is greed and entitlement at a level. I'm your customer, it's 2025 and you're asking me to go out to an atm and get cash out? gtfo with that, you make it as easy as I can to pay.

The people who have turned heel and left your business because you don't accept card, or they can't get cash out versus the money lost from all those transactions even with card. The cost of saving a pathetic few percent on your profits vs the loss of hundreds due to people just leaving because they can't pay card.

It's just pure bullheadedness and annoys me to no end.

Well do you think you are entitled to your good name? Unless you have actual proof of wrong doing, in which case you should report it, then they have the exact same entitlement to their good name as anyone else.

It would be informative if we could have a merchant post up his/her reasons for not accepting cash. Doubt it will happen but………

My brother and sister-in-law say they pay 60 euro an hour cash for the grinds for their leaving cert kid. Their kid knows about a dozen other kids doing grinds with that teacher, so they reckon the teacher makes approx €10,000 cash per year. For about 166 hours work a year, that is say an average of 3 and a half hours per week. Some other teachers may make only 6 or 8k from their side hustle. That is a business that is "cash only". Worth it I suppose if the person getting the grinds gets enough points to do the uni course they want.

I agree but my point was answering the post about reporting them do revenue really care about teachers doing grinds. I mentioned in an earlier post Michael McGrath the minister for finance at the time used to get his haircut in my local barbers who don't even bother to use a till. There's no way he didn't see what was going and nothing happened about it. I just think things like that aren't a priority for revenue. Imagine the amount of staff required to investigate every time they get a report about a teacher giving grinds or the local plumber/painter doing a few cash jobs.

we need both cash & card when the ESB was off for up to 3 weeks in the west cards were useless cash was all you could use if you could get to the shop in your electric car !!! Cash , stoves / fireplaces, gas cooking candles & diesel / petrol cars are all necessities in rural Ireland

Have you never been in a shop where the payment systems went down temporarily?

Happened to me twice this year, once in a bakery and once in a tea shop.

If you don't carry any cash at all you will be inconvenienced at some point. It's common sense to carry some cash with you everywhere.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,279 ✭✭✭bog master

But it begs the question about our education system of why do parents/students need the grinds?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 157 ✭✭Diddly Squat

I'm on the othwr side of this, I've had customers put off payment over trying to save 50 or a hundred euro because they dont want to pay the vat, I've to call back to them when they have it or they'll call to my house with it, they'd rather wait and make it a hassle to try and meet them again rather than saving everyone the trouble and just doing it on their phone through the app or paying by card. I've also started charging 50 extra for anyone that wants to pay me by cheque unless they've no other method of payment l, usually older people. If you want to pay by cheque ill charge an extra hour to the job for the hassle of driving to the bank to lodge it.

I’d have thought the reasons are kinda obvious, and common knowledge.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,610 ✭✭✭mulbot

A question for all, is there anyone here who would be willing to pay for let's say, a 6 or 7 thousand euro job including the VAT, or just pay cash and get the much cheaper price without VAT.

*to note, I'm not asking this based on what some people might say about proof of work done or a receipt of the work. Let's assume all work regardless of payment will be guaranteed etc.

yes leave the teachers alone you cant imagine the abuse they get in schools and the school principals always side with the parents, if the have a little nixer let them. I wouldnt teach for double my salary the modern spoiled b rat is un manageable. My friend teaches languages and is leaving after 15 years due to lack of respect and abuse from the students, sexual comments spitting throwing books at her & the principle sides with the rotten parents who parent as friends rather than parents no boundaries or manners anymore

In fairness alot of teachers still feel the need to enact a certain power portrayal over students, that never works, even more so these days. I've a few friends that are teachers, they love the job, get on well and definitely don't abuse the perceived power,. But anyway that's for a different thread, I don't begrudge anyone making a few extra bob anytime

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,279 ✭✭✭bog master

Not to me anyway. Some trades/professions are well tailored to accept cash and not declare as in say a barber.

A hairdresser not so easy, they have to purchase shampoos-conditioners etc and would have high esb costs which in a Revenue audit would be so easily picked up.

Pubs haven't a hope, if they get an audit, purchases plus markup better equal your till stats. I suppose publican could go to a supermarket but Revenue has power to get purchase details from Diageo or whomever including suppliers/wholesalers in the North.

There is a pub in my nearby town, will call in someday and ask why cash only?

20 cent every time I make an ATM withdrawal or get cash back. Contactless is still free so you can see why people don’t want to use cash. It ain’t free. And they cash only brigade are picking my pocket essentially by not taking card. They make more profit, in their heads at least.
I’m gonna start asking for a discount for cash in these cash only places from now on after reading this thread.
foil, arms and hog did a good skit on these cash only places recently. Good target for a hold up, at least you know there’ll be cash in the till!

It might be, aside from not wanting to declare all income, just a like of cash. I have 2 sides to business, never get cash on the commercial stuff, private I do. Even if it's just a grand in a box, I just love that, and prefer that feeling of having cash to numbers on the screen. Dont really know why, I just do. So I suppose maybe older generations are that way too

car parking in donegal it's euro to top up the app, or 20c per transaction if you use the Web site. so I use cash.

I've never paid a cent in 25 years withdrawing cash. Maybe you should shop round with your banking!

They get well paid and excellent holidays and pensions. I know lots of teachers retired and off seeing the world in their fifties, mortgage free, some having made probably up to 15,000 or 20,000 per year tax free from grinds as a sideline. They should pay tax on ALL their income as everyone else does, that would make the burden on the rest of us less.

Of course there are a lot of ex-teachers in the Dail, some with their jobs held open I think, so do not expect change any time soon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 361 ✭✭Dr.Tom

    Wrong.

You know nothing about me “Jim” so you “assumed” cos I mentioned they were Asian I am racist.

I stated facts. All businesses in my town ran by Asians are cash only. The basis for their doing that is irrelevant to me, you or the thread title. I replied based on the thread title.

What would you like me to call them? Non nationals? Immigrants? What would appease you?

Typical boards shite once again derailing a thread.

Agree, was gonna comment on that post. Was that a Moderator calling you racist?

They have to complete 40 years to get a full pension so if they are retired in their fifties they are on reduced pensions.

I agree that they should pay tax on all sources of income but this holds for all sectors there is no special deal for teachers

Revenue rules already apply to them the same as everyone else. Tax evasion is illegal and punishable by fines and penalties.

The rules for "holding jobs" were actually changed in 2011. They can now take leave of absence for up to 10 years not indefinitely as before.

This is double the standard maximum leave of absence which is still generous but not as good as the previous scheme.
