Wonder will Sky launch Sky Mix on the Saorview platform next year.

It's sounds like a good idea to have Sky Mix on Saorview. It would make it a little bit more attractive to make up for the impending closure of RTÉ's four digital radio stations before the new year.

Sky is currently implementing a strategy of reducing the number of their own branded channels on their own platforms by Q1 2026.

If Sky Mix remains in place on Sky at that point; it would be a nice bonus to see it appear on Saorview if it happens for real.

Also, Any plans for Saorview to make a deal with Warner Bros Discovery to carry it's FTA channels on Saorview next year including Quest, Quest Red, DMAX, Really, Food Network and the new look TLC which is becoming FTA in the new year.

It will be good if sky could launch sky mix on saorview

It comes back to the same issue, who pays, and then why would the broadcasters mentioned go on Saorview when the channels are available free to air on satellite all over the island. The only chance of these channels appearing on Saorview is when satellite services cease but it would have to be economically attractive.

There will be no more sky channels or any other channels going on saorview, it had its day, 15 years on now and its a poor showing. If anything at all channels will be decreasing not increasing.

Of all the sky channels that should have launched on the channel it was Sky Mix, not sure why they choose Challenge.

But yes Saorview was badly handled. From an Irish TV perspective of what could have been to it late entry into the market.

It was purely launched from a regulatory point of view and nothing much else.

I'd say back in 2011 we were better serviced by RTÉ ONE, TWO, TV3 and TG4 on analogue, all are poor relations now, and their Players online are not much better.

    ______

In the end they were just greedy, they all knew one another and knew what to expect more money for no return, it was a secure cash flow, but in fairness they looked for what they wanted and fair dues to them for that, and wouldn't you be doing the same!

Just one more thing .... when did they return that car

I don't know why sky launched challenge tv channel on saorview. Saorview has mess everything up since it was launched and I can't see sky mix going to be launched too

To me Challenge, Arts, Mix and News are really just advertising for Sky I think all have about 4 ads each ad break for their pay TV, mobile and Broadband services. I am surprised that Sky haven't rebrand Challenge to Sky QUIZ, but ITV got there before them.

    "make a deal" ?

If they or anyone else wants their channel on Saorview they cough up the readies. Giving a particular commercial broadcaster a "deal" would be unfair and unjustifiable

I'm raptured by the joy of it all

Just posted, the wee things that get you.In the North almost All RTE aerials are vertical polarisation.

But as I was trying to receive Gold, and can't see Clarmont Carn, I should have pointed the RTE aerial to Kippure, which like Almost all RTE Txs,is Horizontal.

Only taken 13 years to realise!

Saorview still has EPG data for RTE Chill after 31st December. Not sure if that’s a mistake or if Chill has somehow survived?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 844 ✭✭✭Mickey Mike

I doubt it at this stage, it means it will have to have its own channel, now that RTE Jr is closing. The only chance it has is if 2fm carry it through the night.

They didn't actually put in an application, perhaps an oversight and now they are left with it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 844 ✭✭✭Mickey Mike

They also had a feature on the news last night about the centenary of radio in Ireland. Again, no mention that they had just axed a number of their stations the night before.

They don't have too because we are already know about the the other rte radio

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,633 ✭✭✭RoTelly

    ?

Largely RTÉ are playing down anything to do with them, they hope to get through their centenary without someone bring up that stuff that happened and that those people that were exited from the organization for that stuff that happened.

Remember RTÉ is perfect and always has been

The way things are going the next centenary will mark the last licence fee increase in 2008.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,633 ✭✭✭RoTelly

RTÉ have been facilitated in other ways since 2008.

They have largely reduced their overall support for TG4 (save for the 2011 - 2018 period where TG4 receive part of the licence fee, which was and is a questionable move by the governments, however they have since regained TG4 share of the licence fee).

They were allowed moved the NSO and Choirs over to the NCH, saving them 7million per year since 2022 (they could have saved the same amount in 2021 but they were too slow to move following that budget, even though they'd already done the ground work supposedly)

In 2020 they were given 50 million over the course of 5 years, as part of their threat to close Lyric and later threating to move lyric from Limerick. (You'd miss Dee Forbes all the same).

While not directly related Household and business requiring a TV license have increase, the onus on An Post to collect.

And finally at the very end of all of this a bailout across 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026 and 2027, because of their own mistakes, and a massive increases in those not paying the licence fee.

But as I say RTÉ is wonderful.

The switch to RTE Chill went as normal but it's playing the same "station no longer broadcasting" announcement as RTEjr Radio.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 844 ✭✭✭Mickey Mike

And the closure notice will run until the 16th jan, then the defunct radio stations will be totally removed from all platforms.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,633 ✭✭✭RoTelly

You'd think that they would have put text up on the TV with the closure date? Or between songs let have a promo. No real reason to keep them going for another 16 days.

In conclusion, 2025 was the year that a broadcaster pulled out of Saorview for the first time, that was UCB Radio who joined back in 2021.

And RTÉ closed their digital radio stations which they had planed to close in 2024, but only made the submission at the end of that year.
