Even the OAPs find if difficult to see anything worthwhile, I worry about my Mam and Dad who are on Repeats of Heartbeat for the last 10 years, I wish VMTV would at least repeat Doc Martin.

It's also due to content across their services the CnaM seem to forget that RTÉ has an online streaming service. But even it suggests that RTÉ aren't pick viewers up there.

As for their Home grown podcasts are they really bring in audiences?

    ______

In the end they were just greedy, they all knew one another and knew what to expect more money for no return, it was a secure cash flow, but in fairness they looked for what they wanted and fair dues to them for that, and wouldn't you be doing the same!

Just one more thing .... when did they return that car

Well that's that everything is great in RTÉ. KB4 was in the oireachtas. Marty Morrissey has told him he's not going to the BBC.

And RTÉ is great. The Toy Show is perfect, if only they could have a Toy show every week!

I was living with my father up until about 2 years ago. His main hobby was watching TV, and his go-to TV programs/channels were:

    • CNN/Sky News
    • The Chase
    • Death in Paradise
    • Michael Portillo riding around on a train
    • Older comedies e.g. Only Fools, Porridge, Yes Minister

The only RTE thing he would watch was Prime Time or if Rugby was on RTE he'd watch that.

I don't think we will ever hear from Dee Forbes. She was given a get out of jail free card hy the board of RTE when they accepted her resignation.

Her contract was up. She was already off taking accumulated annual leave when she "resigned" so it made no difference. Not defending her but AFAIK nobody can be compelled to attend a Dail committee.

Yes this is true, but as floppybit says the Board allowed her to go before she could be compelled to attend the oireachtas committee, there was still time to have her take questions.

    Compelled by who?

If I've come to the end of an employment contract and am already out of the workplace using up my leave, if my employer asked me to do anything I'd kindly invite them to foxtrot oscar.

What we are saying is that as DG she would have had to have gone to the Committee, she was still in place as DG until her resignation which the board accepted before the Committee had time to bring her in. Though it would have only given them a week, she'd had her leaving due the Friday before they accepted her resignation.

I think you are still contracted if you are on annual leave, you haven't actually left the company, that is if she was on annual leave.

This situation suits everyone perfectly. The current management team can shrug and say "That contract/deal/agreement was signed/agreed to by my predecessor. It's out of my hands". D4bes has changed her address and so can not be summoned to any Dail Committee.

Pretty much what KB4 said when he was asked in Jim Jennings should coming into the committee to provide some information. Sure what more would there be to find out? and without saying it It would really be only to annoy me if he where to appear.

Most senior public servants have clauses in their employment contracts obliging them to appear on front of any Oireachtas Committee if requested, even if they've moved on or retired. Seems like RTE HR decided to leave this clause out of their contracts?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,429 ✭✭✭Floppybits

That should be standard In all RTE mid - senior level management. Especially those involved in decision making and management of the momey.

    She still couldn't be compelled.

What could they do? Fire her? Then what?

    Broadcasting Act 2009

92.— (1) In this section “Committee” means a Committee appointed by either House of the Oireachtas or jointly by both Houses of the Oireachtas (other than the Committee on Members’ Interests of Dáil Éireann or the Committee on Members’ Interests of Seanad Éireann) or a subcommittee of such a Committee.

    (2) Subject to subsection (4), a director general shall, at the request in writing of a Committee, attend before it to give account for the general administration of his or her corporation.

Perhaps she could have got out of it by suggesting it might come before a tribunal!

    (4) A director general or chairperson shall not be required to give account for, or represent the views of the board of his or her corporation in respect of, any matter which is or has been or may at a future time be the subject of proceedings before a court or tribunal in the State.

    https://businessplus.ie/news/committee-chair-compel/

An Oireachtas committee must seek in writing the consent of the Oireachtas Committee on Procedure and Privileges (CPP), chaired by the Ceann Comhairle, who will consider whether to grant approval.

Shall, under penalty of losing their job presumably, because it mentions no other penalty. She could just say "so what?" expectationlost's link shows that actually compelling someone, by High Court order, is difficult and uncertain.

We rejected a constitutional amendment about this issue in relation to Dail enquiries.

Question Is this in relation to the Director General of RTÉ and TG4? It seems to me that they are talking about staff (such as Jim Jennings) rather than the DG themselves who under the act is required to appear. Perhaps I am misunderstanding this.

Either way KB4 is out with his Christmas message

We're talking post resignation, so she wasn't DG anymore.

Im meant the wording in the contract not the positions.

We where talk about her before she resigned and before the resignation was excepted. I took for granted that she didn't have to appear in the Dail following the acceptance of her resignation by the board, as I had said the Oireachtas committee even then really only had a week or 2 to call her as her term was due to finish, she'd had going away drinks the Friday before everything blew up.

She actually didn't have to feign illness she simple could have said I have made everything clear in my resignation letter, but I am sure herself and Jimbo will get a doctor's note if asked to attend by the committee rather than just saying "I have nothing further to add".

Haven’t had RTE in my house for years, just because of the crappy aerial I had. Don’t use the website or listen to their radio. My TV finally broke so replaced it with a monitor so that I officially don’t have to pay the licence fee.
It’s such an outmoded tax. Belongs to another era.
I saw in the tv licence website that I can fill in a form to declare that i don’t have a tv. FFS. How did that pass GDPR? Do I need to send the dog warden a form to say I don’t have a dog and the Gardai one that I don’t have a gun?

Dee Forbes thinks its outmoded also she wanted direct funding from the exchequer, would you be happy with that?

Yes, doesn’t matter who said it, it’s true. Method of tax collection from another era.
My taxes already pay for plenty of services that I don’t use and will never use. Might as well add RTÉ to that list.
What’s the alternative? A licence fee that hasn’t been increased in about 15 years with even higher evasion rates now is pointless. RTÉ will never recover its reputation from the payments scandal to have the authority to demand every household pay. Even if they did, it’s so antiquated. Inspectors calling to doors etc.

Centralise it in tax and let RTÉ put their case for funding like every other department.
We need public service broadcasting (even if I don’t watch it, I still think we need it as a nation).

    But it won't change RTÉ.

Why are their higher rates of evasion than ever before?

Why should tax payers bail RTÉ out of the mess they created?

What happens when there is a downturn should its funding be decrease in line with other areas of spending?

We need public service broadcasting but do we need RTÉ?

RTÉ is undergoing massive changes right now. The only thing that’ll be the same after Bakhurst is done will be the name.
