I am making the trifle for christmas dinner this year.

Any easy trifle recipes floating around in boards.ie heads, wont be putting any sherry in it serving it to non drinkers

Birds box is under 4 quid in Supervalu…

For doing it "properly", the main thing is picking what flavour do you want your jelly; and buy decent quality savoiardi; and maybe consider actually making custard from scratch. My mother would consider all of that to be notions, and hence I have the box, because she's the main consumer of it and consider it essential at Christmas!

Trifle sponge covered in strawberry Jam in the base. Cover with strawberry jelly and let set.
Prepare a separate bowl of orange jelly and let it set.
Make a thick custard, easier from the powder. Let it cool. Once cooled put it on top of the strawberry layer.
Mix up the Orange Jelly and add on top.
    Cover in cream (optional)

My mother mixes the savioardi with the jelly to make the bottom layer, also mixes in a tin of fruit, custart on top, then cream and hundreds and thousands

Here's a controversial notion: trifle without jelly is much, much nicer.

For example, tiramisu is a jellyless trifle.

I did a lovely one once with, champagne biscuits, grapes, custard and elderflower whipped cream.

Definitely. NO JELLY…. Just sponge spread with good quality raspberry jam, soaked in port, then layer of fresh raspberries, topped with custard and cream, and more raspberries on top.

If you’re not using port/alcohol I’d soak the sponge in fresh orange juice, and use tinned mandarins and grapes instead of the raspberries, and spread the sponge with skinless marmalade or lemon curd instead of the raspberry jam. Custard and cream on top with more of the fresh fruit.

    Don’t oversoak the sponge though.
    There’s a fine line.

I have a recollection that some ground almond in the custard makes a totally different class of custard :)
