Thinking of switching from a Day/Night/Peak rate with Energia to a 24hr tariff with Flogas fixed for 12 months @ 0.2256 incl. vat per kWh.

Energy Pal and Kilowatt think the regular 24hr tariffs suit my use rather than the Day/Night/Peak rates.

Question is has anyone seen any better than 0.2256 rate from any other supplier and secondly is fixed a good idea or is there a chance prices will drop again next year but I'll be locked in and won't get the reduction ?

    Tia

there’s no signs of prices dropping at all, fixed price isn’t for everyone but I’m happy with my choice, the way I looked at it is if the saving is big enough and miracles do happen then €59 gets me out of it

    The internet isn’t for everyone

I don't see any cheaper plans out there. I'm on their BWG 23.44c fixed, or so I thought, the latest bill has seen both a rise in unit rates and standing charge, they also have me on monthly billing which I never requested. I've a terrible dose on me at the moment and really don't have the energy to be dealing with call centres....

From what I understand the day night peak rates are best for those that are using lots of electricity at night (i.e. charging an EV)

If you are a hybrid worker or spend a significant amount of time at home, and dont have an EV, then the 24 hour rate seems better as its generally lower than the day peak rates (higher than night)

Maybe someone can correct me if im wrong

I would say that's about right. You would need to be able to shift some normal day or peak time units to night rate to make any real savings. For me, once TV is off, my night time usage is negligible.

You're spot on, in saying that, even with an EV which I have, it's still better for me being on a 24hr plan. My usage is 70% day/peak and 30% night, I always time the car to start charging at 11pm so the bulk of that 30% is the car.

Are the 24 hour rates a new thing? Don't recall them being an option last December

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,002 ✭✭✭bren2001

    No, not new.

A little more widespread with smart tariffs this year but they existed this time last year. Obviously (non-smart) standard tariffs have always had 24 hour rates.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,002 ✭✭✭bren2001

Have you ever messed with your HDF file and set the car to charge during the EV rate times?

My rule of thumb for D/N was always 2:1 (Day:Night) when my family asked me if they should switch to a D/N tariff. If a family member said they used around this amount of electricity at night, it was worth investigating. You're not a million miles off that and I suspect, moving the EV to the special rate may yield savings. Naturally on a ToU plan, you may also adjust other usage to save money.

Obviously might not make sense for you etc. Just a query.

The only other factor is if your main heating is electrical rather gas or oil, which generally applies to apartments.

Battery storage would be another factor (and in turn solar).

Was about to switch to Yuno on Friday but thougt I'd have another look. They seemed to have cut their welcome bonus by 100 from 340 to 240. Might give them a ring and see if they'll honour. What are the chances anyway they'll return. Pissed off about that.

Thanks for the tip. I renewed with them at this price.

Electric heating would prob be during day and peak more than night i would have thought...unless people leave heating on all night when tucked in bed.

Really? Really? Have you ever heard of storage heating?

Not that common around the planet Ireland

So I spent around 2 hours comparing Switcher / Bonkers / EnergyPal and even MoneyGuideIreland

I was getting completely different recommendations from EnergyPal so I just created my own spreadsheet and manually compared the values offered by the main companies that were suggested to me (other than Yuno Energy and Bord Gais who both use estimates)

I checked 24 hour and ToU tariffs (I'm on smart meter)

In the end both Switcher and Bonkers had suggested the actual cheapest one when I did the calculations, but EnergyPal was well off, suggesting options that would end up being €200 more expensive and didn't even list the one that ended up being cheapest.

So I wouldn't bet everything on EnergyPal being the only tool you need… in fact the best way to do it, if you have time, is literally manually type in the unit rate, standing charges, your annual usage, and any discounts for all cheapest plans and get the annual total spend that way, but use the comparison sites as starting off points, and EnergyPal is probably good to see what % you use at night, but I wouldn't bet everything on its suggestions right now.

as a matter of interest, how was energypal wrong?

I'm assuming you uploaded your HDF file to bonkers etc? With a smart meter, i don't see the point in manually typing stuff in.

So I made the switch to Flogas this week and low and behold I received the now expected call from Energia this morning with a counter offer.

The best they could give me when I called up to renew was a 32% discount off their smart data day, night, peak tariff but amazingly today they were able to offer me a whopping 38% discount bringing the rates incl. vat to:

    Day: 0.2612

    Night: 0.1436

    Peak: 0.2933

However, based on my own research and Energy Pal and Kilowatt.ie recommendations I am moving back to the single 24hr tariff and Energia were not able to match the Flogas rate of 0.2256 incl. vat so they wished me the best of luck and we parted ways for 12 months at least.

Hope this information might help others out there in the process of switching.

I like kilowatt.ie , it shows the results clearly and easy to understand. Thanks for that @Sami23

I uploaded the HDF both this year and last years and both ended up giving the same result. (Im with Flogas now for context)

    Yuno energy always listed first.

    Then Electric Ireland was next.

    Then Airtricity.

Didnt see the Energia plan listed until well down.

This ended up being the cheapest when I did my calcs, and was also the one recommended by the comparison sites.

Electric Ireland and Airtricity were both around €200 more

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,209 ✭✭✭Escapees

Not following this... You say Yuno was always listed first in the rankings, but that you went with Energia which was well down the list. And the reason was because it was the one recommended by the comparison sites? Maybe it's me but it's not the clearest as to whether the comparison sites were wrong or not etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,002 ✭✭✭bren2001

A bit like Escapees, I don't think I 100% follow but I do get the gist of what you're saying. You believe they miscalculate the Energia total bill for the year? Both the comparison sites and your own calculations back that up?

If that's the case, that's very interesting. I've only had a smart meter installed recently and literally only switched 2 weeks ago but it's something I'll keep in mind for 12 months time.

I think this is very much one of those you need to see for yourself, its hard to explain!

No joy with Flogas, they won't move me to the cheaper 22c rate or change me to bi-monthly billing. I wonder would signing up as a new customer using a different email work? It does work with virgin media...

What Flogas rate is that @ 22.56c?

I recently moved to Flogas on their Single Electricity 30% Discount @ 27.75, because the €150 Welcome Credit made it cheaper for me than the Fixed rate @ 24.09, but I didn't see the 22.56c one anywhere.

On the comparasion sites, are you selecting the option to see all plans including those that are not available through the site?
