The only reason they're doing this is to retain a "got ya" card to deport people on progression visas that the regime deems to be too critical. They'll take your tourist money, but I still wouldn't fancy being detained simply because some ICE depot is trying to meet its monthly target.

Quite a few pundits suggest the Trump regime is in big trouble though. He's giving all the signs of a political leader who is rapidly losing popularity and falling out of favour with the electorate - and the next presidential election is still three years away.

A lot of his voter base simply don't believe in government, and I don't believe they'll simply graft onto Vance. When it comes flipping tables no one did it better than Trump and his base loved him for it.

The question is after Trump will his anarchist base simply turn on government outright. At the time of the lockdowns I genuinely thought the armed occupation and takeover of a red state capital was possible. The insurrection sapped that momentum, but it hasn't gone away.

I can well imagine some flyover states becoming non land transit states too.

It's an interesting question as to whether 'Trumpism' and 'MAGAism' will be able to survive the inevitable decline and demise of Trump. Certainly though, he himself seems to be in trouble: his gloss and sheen appears to be quickly wearing off with the American public.

They do. It's just not in a European-style government that provides services and infrastructure. It's in a government that terrorises the people they hate, imprisons black people and censors views they hate. Same with libertarians like Ron and Rand Paul with their medieval views on abortion.

They will. The interesting question is what form it will take. Once Trump dies, there'll be multiple factions. I'd say one based around JD Vance if he gets to be President, one around one of the family and maybe a third, perhaps led by someone like Ron DeSantis.

Some of those Hollywood types (who Trump would hate regardless) who invest in alcohol are missing a trick. They should create a range that people can buy but keep in the fridge only to be opened once Trump pops his clogs. 😄

"On Monday, press freedom campaigners urged the BBC to stand strong and “fight back”.

“You don’t get to call out any alleged journalistic blunder and demand $10bn,” Seth Stern, director of advocacy at the Freedom of the Press foundation, said. “It’s preposterous for Trump to claim those damages when he won the 2024 election and hasn’t lost a penny because of the BBC’s editing.

“It’s also absurd for him to claim associating him with January 6 is defamatory after he spent years insisting nothing bad happened that day and then pardoned those involved. And it’s similarly outrageous that his claims are based on supposedly damaging implications of his using the word ‘fight’. He sells T-shirts with that word on them.”

I do hope the BBC fight back on the above discovery lines and not allow themselves to be bullied as others have, take a similar stance as China and tell him "GFY", Starmer should publicly support the BBC.

You'd have to wonder what exactly, and I mean "exactly" Trump has on Graham to have made him prostitute himself like this.

This is him how he previously referred to Biden.

I know theres rumours about Grahams sexuality but surely hes trying to hide something bigger than that. He has debased himself completely.

I think this is a classic example of Groucho Marx's quip on principles. Graham saw which way the wind would blow and moved accordingly.

The BBC kinda have to fight back. It's taxpayers/Licence payers money.

Yeah I suppose I am not in a good position to comment given I'm Irish, we are not in Schengen, and we receive (though wonder for how much longer?) some special benefits when it comes to travel to the US.

I have always thought all the EU member countries should be mirroring whatever the US does to our citizens when travelling there.

That's never happened because disunity of the EU in this policy area, size/power of the US and its ability to play divide and rule with the individual members comes into play.

Anyways, the European version of US "ESTA" is only coming in next year I think? If they go ahead, maybe whack the fee on that up. Charge them EUR 500 or even EUR 1,000 each for it or something!

The US is rich, Americans are rich and it's pocket change no doubt & loads of them still seem to want to travel here (in preference to Russia, or Belarus say) despite our civilisational decline and descent into anarchy - so soak them good!

The lettuce has gone all in on Trumpism far right, Johnson and Farage already in that bed.

I think maybe that was true 6/7 yrs ago but he had an opportunity to move against Trump when he was weak in January 2021 and he didn't.

And even right now, more and more Republicans are shifting (slowly) from Trump but Graham is going hard supporting him.

On the White House Ballroom front, presumably in response to the National Trust for Historic Preservation suit against the destruction of the old wing, The White House has claimed in a court filing that the construction project must continue for national security reasons but has not revealed what the national security reasons are AND claims that the National trust group has no legal standing to sue.

It wouldn't stand a chance of being pursued but the notion of European countries putting a surcharge on foreign tourists coming to play golf at a certain foreign personality's private clubs and establishments has a certain lure to it.

I'm guessing that argument might be coming from the original war-time purpose of the East Wing, which was partly to hide the constuction of the White House bunker and Emergency Operations Center. However these days those roles are likely spread across different buildings and it was Donnie's own damned fault tearing it down in the first place…so his argument is moot.

By coincidence, I have just watched a youtube video suggesting that they are in fact building a massive data center there, and by placing it on the site of the White House, can hide many of the details, as it falls under executive privilege. I think the ballroom on top is probably to placate Trump's narcissism, but the rest of the project involves a lot of contractors with interesting connections. Apparently there is something similar in Israel - a massive datacenter in a secure location designed to survive enemy attacks.

Buried deep underground. There is already a bunker under the East Wing. And "secure" can mean independent of any commercial cloud provider.

I imagine the national security reasons are "giant f*cking hole in the building".

The original architect that he engaged has quit basically because it's physically impossible to create whatever the fúck kind of monstrosity that Trump wants to build. He's now hired a new firm and the costs have moved up from ~$200M to ~$350M so far.

For me I would say let them go ahead with these draconian requirements that are the acts of an authoritarian government writ large and let it lead to a further tanking in tourism to the US and all the loss of revenue that would bring. No need for us to retaliate with the same and hurt ourselves financially from a tourism standpoint as well as the fact it would just highlight the authoritarian nature of the US regime.

I also have no interest in encouraging any more state snooping and surveillance from the British and European governments. If the Americans want fascism, let them have it.

I saw a headline from The Guardian about librarians trying to resist the MAGA Nazis trying to get books banned from libraries. The insane thing is that in 2021-2022, 60% of the challenges came from 11 people:

    https://lithub.com/just-a-few-hateful-parents-are-responsible-for-most-of-the-book-challenges-in-america/

John Oliver covered this in one of his shows:

It's funny how the First Amendment offers practically no protection in Trump's America.

    —Trump “has an alcoholic’s personality.”

—Vance has been “a conspiracy theorist for a decade.”

—Musk is “an avowed ketamine [user].”

—Vought is “a right-wing absolute zealot.”
